Vintage-inspired Fuzz Box

From the JHS Legends of Fuzz series of vintage-inspired fuzz pedals, the JHS Bender puts the celebrated tone of a rare Sola Sound Tone Bender at your feet. When pedal maker Gary Hurst first introduced the Tone Bender, it was a game changer that was quickly embraced by the artists of the day, including the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Jeff Beck. Over the decades, it has remained a perennial favorite of tone chasers, helping to define the sound of British shoegaze in the late 1980s and early '90s, and now popping up on the pedalboards of revivalist psych rockers and vintage gear enthusiasts. The Bender replicates Josh Scott’s most prized version of the Tone Bender, the 1973 MK3 Silver/Orange “Onomatopoeia” edition. The Bender retains the original 3-germanium-transistor design but rectifies the reliability issues of that unit, giving you all the tone with none of the hassles. Guitarists at Sweetwater love the sonic flexibility the Bender has to offer along with its straightforward design and hefty all-metal enclosure. The Bender is a slice of rock ‘n’ roll history that is as relevant today as it was nearly 60 years ago.

Dynamic fuzz box with a huge tonal range

Unlike some fuzz pedals, which are full onslaught all the time, the Bender is highly expressive and sensitive to picking dynamics, going from a restrained crunch when picked lightly to a gnarly growl when you dig in. Three simple controls — Volume, Tone, and Attack — offer up a wealth of sonic flexibility, letting you tailor your sound from dark to bright and even dialing up a gated effect when the Attack knob is cranked. The Bender also has a new trick — a JHS Mode button, which amps up the gain and boosts the mids for extra howl. Like all the Legends of Fuzz pedals, the Bender is housed in a stunning custom wedge-shaped bent-metal enclosure with throwback knobs and full-metal badge plates — an old-school look to match its old-school tone.

The JHS Legends of Fuzz Series

According to JHS founder Josh Scott, the invention of fuzz pedals was one of the most significant events in the history of the electric guitar and popular music. JHS has been creating innovative fuzz boxes for over a decade, but this time around, they’ve chosen to pay tribute to the great fuzz boxes of the past. The JHS Legends of Fuzz series features period-accurate re-creations of some of the most famous fuzz circuit designs of all time, with a few JHS-exclusive twists. As these original fuzz pedals have become increasingly rare, prices of working units on the collectors’ market have skyrocketed, making them inaccessible to most players. Now, with JHS’s Legend of Fuzz pedals, players from all walks of life will be able to enjoy these storied tone machines and experience the magic of some of the finest fuzz boxes ever produced.

JHS Bender Fuzz Pedal Features:

  • Faithfully re-created tribute to JHS founder Josh Scott’s prized 1973 MK3 Tone Bender fuzz pedal
  • Responsive to picking dynamics, from restrained crunch to full-out sonic aggression
  • Offers up a wide range of dark and bright fuzz tones
  • JHS Mode button provides a gain boost and a mid-frequency bump for extra howl
  • Housed in a custom wedge-shaped bent-metal enclosure
  • Vintage-style knobs and full-metal badge plate
  • Optional battery power for authentic vintage operation

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Amazing Fuzz- Super Crisp and Substantial!

First and foremost, thanks to my sales engineer, Justin Wofford for suggesting this pedal! I told him what kind of fuzz I was in the market for, and he recommended this one and nailed it perfectly!! If you're looking for a really classic fuzz pedal, look no further- this is the quintessential golden age of fuzz. It's especially amazing if you're playing 60s and 70s rock, blues, psychedelic soul, garage rock, funk, punk, shoegaze and really anything that needs a little crunch (or a lot of crunch). There's a ton of great tone combos in here too; I've yet to get a bad sound out of it. You can hold back and you get a nice sizzle. You can turn up the tone and get some cool solo sounds. You can turn the volume and attack up and it absolutely roars! I was a tiny bit worried that I'd want something more intense, but the Bender has all the intensity I could want and hope for, and then some! It gives your guitar tone that satisfying little potato chip crunch at the beginning and end of the notes that is truly soul-feeding! It sits super well in mixes I've recorded so far, and it fits great on my board too (big, but not as big as I thought). It sounds great with my Earthquaker Westwood overdrive and my MXR Mini-Phase 95. I'm currently making a lot of psychedelic stuff and this pedal is the ingredient I've needed for a while. As far as the knobs go, yeah they could be a little easier to see, but I'm sure I can easily figure out a way to mark them when I take it out for live performance, so no complaints there at all. JHS really crushed this one! I could ramble on and on about this pedal, but I won't. It's going to stay on my board for a very long time (maybe forever?). Also, the price is so good for the quality. Okay that's all. Thank you again Justin Wofford and Sweetwater!

Awesome tribute to the 70's

Very powerfull fuzz! Punchy mids when you hit the mode button wich is JHS's signature mod. Josh really nailed this pedal! Its a must if you like a hot/bright fuzz tone! It cleans up nicely when you turn the volume knob down on your guitar or bass!

Definitely pick her up!

Another JHS masterpiece

I have never been a big fan of fuzz, always seemed to overwhelm the sound too much, but that was my experience with Big Muffs and such. I had never tried a Tonebender style pedal and took a shot in the dark on this, as I have had good luck with JHS pedals in the past. I have been incredibly pleased with it so far, to the extent that it has become an "always on" pedal for me. I do need to roll off the guitars volume to clean up the signal a little, but it sounds fantastic. Very much that early Zeppelin sound (think 4 Sticks or Out on the Tiles) through my Dirty Shirley Synergy Module. Get a good sound on both my Les Paul and Telecaster with very little adjustment to anything. As with all my other JHS products, the construction is solid and durable.
My signal chain is very basic for those who are interested. Crybaby Wah-Bender-Morning Glory OD-Fender Marine Reverb. Yes that is actually all I use. All to the Synergy and then a Two Notes Cab M. Sounds glorious through the PA. (or leave out the Cab M and run it through my Marshall)

Great Pedal!

This pedal cleans up super well and super clear no matter how gritty it gets. Very fun!

The Holy Grail

I've been searching for the right fuzz pedal for the past 20 years.. i must have gone thru at least 10 different pedals. the Bender, all knobs at noon, that red button disengaged - is the perfect fuzz for me. i have it going into a crunchy plexi - actually i have it going thru the send/return loop of my noise gate that goes directly into the front of the amp. and i am good for now - no more searching.. kudos to jhs
