Seriously impressive

I'm no drummer (at least not yet) but I bought this kit primarily because the only thing keeping me from being able to host band practices at my house was the lack of a drum kit. So far 3 drummer friends of mine have come over to play it and all have given it glowing reviews. One actually decided he's going to buy one for himself because he has limited space like I do. He said "for the amount of room it takes up, I refuse to believe you could do any better". The general consensus is that the kick drum is particularly impressive, like "how can something that small make THAT sound??". I was torn between buying a nice electric kit or a small acoustic kit and I really think I made the right choice here. With a drum module and RTOM triggers and mute pads on the way, I'll be able to do the electric thing anyway, plus have the option to switch back to all-acoustic at a moment's notice, and at a cost that STILL beats the high-tier electric kits. As a side note, the color is almost a perfect match for my cherry sparkle Gretsch guitar which just adds to how happy I am with this purchase. Cats love it too.

perfect kit

I use this kit with 2 moon gels per drum, an evens mead kick head and hotrods drum sticks. I also have a towel in the kick. It sounds and plays great. Super small footprint and great tone. Much better than smaller diameter kick drums. With regular drum sticks its plenty loud and will keep up with a band. With hot rodz sticks its quiet enough to play with acoustic guitars and country club settings. Best sounding and playing small kit I've used. I have also tried the Sonor and Yamaha club kits. This is the best.

Small gigging kit.

After much research I chose the Tama Pancake kit for smaller venues. I put the kit through the paces playing with my band using stock heads provided with kit. Pleasantly surprised how small footprint and large sound kit brings. I have tweaked kit with Evan heads on toms. I haven't replaced bass head or snare. Fun kit! Well worth $ Tama needs to being back Champagne sparkle!

Good for price, with one flaw

In general, I'm pretty happy with this kit. The price was good, and with some careful tuning, you can get it to sound pretty good. The portability is really nice, while at the same time setting up to a "real" kit (granted with pancake shells). The kit sounded even better (for what I play, anyway) when I put a set of Evens '56 Calftone heads on it. However, this leads to my only complaint. The bass drum hoops are slightly undersized, so I could not fit the Calftone head on the bass drum. However, I solved this cheaply and easily by getting a pair of unfinished 18" hoops which I stained myself (and honestly, the replacement hoops look better anyway).

Good things do come in small packages

I am a bass player. This kit is for my son, a drummer. As a bass player, I am keenly aware of how important good sounding drums are. I also know that you are going to miss many opportunities to play if you always have to drag a big rig with you when a small one will do. This is that kit. Out of the box, there is nothing special about it. But like most drums sets, when you put the right heads on it, and properly tune it, it transforms into a musical instrument. That is most definitely the case here. On the bass drum, I installed an EMAD2, and an EQ3. The toms sport Onyx heads. The snare is wearing an HD Dry, a hazy Ambassador, and an Evans Custom 20 strand. I also paired the bass drum up with a Dragonfly suede beater. For cymbals, I went with the Zildjian city pack. The result is a great sounding and fun to play kit with loads of character that travels easily and requires only a small amount of space. I will also be getting the Tama bags for this kit when they are available and a Yamaha crosstown hardware bundle. This should make for a light package that can be packed in 5 bags for easy transport: one bag for drums, one for cymbals, one for the stands, one for the throne, and one for everything else, (kick pedal, stick bag, etc).
