A Stunning Sweetwater Exclusive Snare from Head to Toe

The Special-edition Satin Deluxe Black Beauty brass snares from Ludwig have landed here at Sweetwater, and our timekeepers can’t keep their eyes off them! Formed with a 1.2mm seamless beaded brass shell that’s been black-nickel-plated and satin-finished, this Special-edition Black Beauty exudes the bright cut and powerful presence of a true metal snare complemented by subtle overtone taming from its alloy formula. Dressed to the nines in top-tier hardware, Ludwig has treated this Special-edition Black Beauty to a set of authoritative and pro-intonation die-cast hoops, anchored down by sleek Tube lugs with slip-combatting and rubber-washered tension rods. A handsome, hardy, and hasty P86 throw off/P35 butt plate pairing controls this snare’s 18-strand set of Vintage ’63 steel snare wire, ensuring a snaring/tenoring experience that’s quick enough to engage at a moment’s notice while tracking and performing. Topped with a Remo Black Suede batter head and a Weather Master clear head on the snare side, the dark and shadowy sheen of this Special-edition Black Beauty showcases an aesthetic that’s sure to stun all in its path — only available at Sweetwater!

Experience the superior metal sound of seamless brass

Drummers praise the brass shell tone as one of the premier metal snare examples for not only its as-expected projection but also its unique tonal traits. Unlike an aluminum or steel snare, this 1.2mm seamless brass alloy shell ever-so-slightly darkens the natural tone, preserving the presence you want without the excessive overtone ringing you don’t. As a result, this snare offers a superior solution for studio work while still thriving with ease out on stages of any size.

On top of its sound, the beaded center of the Special-edition Black Beauty helps maintain phenomenal strength for years of high-tension usage without structural harm. Black-nickel-plated and satin-finished for a truly moody look, this snare is bound to attract a fair bit of attention, even before you start playing!

Hardware in a league of its own

Everywhere you look across the Special-edition Black Beauty brass snare, you’ll find professional-grade hardware appointed for playability that can’t be topped. Exhibit A: die-cast hoops! These hugely present and rock-steady hoops make a tremendous tonal match for the shell and prioritize your tuning of choice for intonation dependability you can count on while out on the big stage or during that crucial recording session. Partnered with Ludwig’s charming center-mounted Tube lugs and tension rods with rubber washers, it’s safe to say that once you find your sound, this snare will stick with it!

Aiding in the smooth operability of the Special-edition Black Beauty is the outfitting of a P86 throw off and accompanying P35 butt plate. Tall, traditional, and equal in its elegant charm, this combo functions with incredible speed to keep players in absolute control under all performance circumstances. Finally, suspended across the snare side, you’ll find that Ludwig has retro-fitted this Special-edition Black Beauty with an 18-strand set of Vintage ’63 steel snare wires. Promising the snap and sensitivity of Ludwig’s coveted vintage ’60s snare sound, these snares are guaranteed to exude detailed old-school appeal under the microscope of any microphone.

The Ludwig legacy

With a proud legacy that dates back to 1909, Ludwig drums are a favorite among Sweetwater drummers for their warm, punchy sound. The world has heard them in front of Cream's Ginger Baker, keeping the pulse behind Queen at Live Aid, and laying down the monstrous sound of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks." But their biggest break came when Ringo Starr proudly played them on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. The Satin Deluxe Black Beauty snare drum carries this impressive legacy forward.

Ludwig Satin Deluxe Black Beauty Snare Drum Features:

  • 1.2mm seamless brass snare drum with black nickel plating
  • Brass tone is perfectly bright, cutting, and projective, with tamer overtones than other metal snares
  • Shell beading presents a stronger core for years of flawless high-tension usage
  • Excellent choice for cutting through live mixes and tracking with incredible tonal detail in the studio
  • Die-cast hoops offer massive presence with fantastic tuning dependability
  • Center-mounted Tube lugs aided by tension rods with rubber washers help keep your intonation from slipping
  • Smooth-operating P86 throw off with P35 butt plate tenors and snares with exceptional speed and ease
  • 18-strand Vintage '63 steel snare wires present an attack and sensitivity that channels that coveted '60s Ludwig tone and response
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Reviews

Black Beauty snare
I like this, but pricy.
Have tried older Black Beauty in high school.
Loud snare. It was nice and it cut through.
I own a 1972 Vistalite snare I ordered by train straight from the factory. Whole 5 piece kit with 24" bass drum, leather cases and roller hardware box with strap cover.
Atlas stands.
Its a great rock kit and good for outside playing and records well too.
Made two CDs with it.
I paid $920 for all in 1972 at 12 years old with two years saving my lawn mower money.
Kit still is original and barely a scratch.
My other kit is a Yamaha maple Power Special.
Good kit but different.
I find my larger Ludwig easier and more fun to play with the Speed King peddle.
These peddles don't break either.
Only problem later was squeak in heel plate.
Pics of the Yamaha kit.
Music background: From 6th grade thru high school. Concert band, swing band, marching band. My own rock bands and still play. I fill in others too. played percussion from age 12, now 66. I love the drums. I like music and playing out. Written a couple good rock songs.
A beautiful drum with great sound
I've owned two other black beauty snares and a supraphonic from different eras, and I think this might be my overall favorite. It's definitely the most eye catching, too.
Happy little drum. Loud little drum.
Any and all critiques come from a place of love. I've had this black beauty for about a year now and it sings loud and proud. The brass shell is responsive at all playing from soft to hard. Cross stick playing sounds phenomenal I don't even flip the stick to play. Another review mentioned that this BB lacks body and has more ring than a standard BB. I gotta say out of the box I totally agree. I'll let you decide, as for me I was disappointed because I wasn't expecting that. However I switched both heads starting with an Evan's 500 and it gave me more tone and less ringing. I ended up putting an Evan's hybrid batter head and that gave me more control over the overtones from finger tight to medium high. Even though the hybrid head is a heavy head if I continue to go higher I'll get ringing overtones. Those overtones are musical, but for my needs are highly unnecessary. Depending on your tuning and snare wires you can get it to crack, or pop, it's very versatile. One of the reasons I ended up putting a hybrid head is because I'm a heavy hitter, this head takes a beating and then some. However the reason the BB didn't get 5 stars isn't because of scratches or anything like that on the finish. Mine came out pristine from the inside and out. Maybe not glossy, but it looks good. The last time I played it live my heavy hitting made two tension rods come loose. I know what you're thinking "that's normal for heavy hitters". However the two rods that came loose were on the snare side head. I use a tunebot to cut time and find the frequency I like fast. I can assure you they were tight. I'm not sure if it was the tension rods, or the tube lugs but I'd never had that problem in my life. Overall I love the drum. But in this price range I'd honestly go with a bell brass snare. The "regular" BB is a better drum if you ask me less expensive for the same size. If you don't mind spending a little extra to be different and like to spend time getting to know your drums tuning range look no further. It's true strength singing into a microphone. Shoutout to Dibbz my Sweetwater sales engineer.
Quality Control Issues, Missing Body compared to Black Beauty
My rep Tyler gets 5 stars - phenomenal through the purchase (and sadly return) process. Review is specifically on the drum.

Appearance:
The color is a bit more of a cool-grey than a satin black nickel. I included a photo in daylight with the drum. Still looks great, but was a bit surprised/disappointed (note: drum comes with die-cast hoops, not true hoops as pictured).
When looking the drum over I noticed several scratches on the inside and several coating issues on the bottom bearing edge. Drum wasn't marked B-Stock so these sort of defects were surprising.

Sound:
To give some context I had a 6.5x14 Ludwig DCP "Blackest Beauty", 6.5x14 Black Beauty and this Satin Deluxe in house. I did some A-B-C'ing with the same heads/tuning/etc and listened live and under the mic with a flatline EQ. Both the "Blackest Beauty" and Satin Deluxe had extra ring in the higher frequencies and lacked body compared to the Black Beauty. I was curious if the extra ring was due to the tube lugs, but after replacing the imperial lugs on the Black Beauty with tube lugs I really attribute it to the coating...The black nickel adds something that can't be replicated in the Satin Deluxe or "Blackest Beauty". The Black Beauty had more pleasant overtones, more meat.
Note: If you like to dampen drums (i.e. o-rings, moon gel, etc) then the differences mentioned above are negligible.

Conclusion:
Due to the quality issues with the drum and given that it didn't sound as good as a Black Beauty I ended up returning it. Great collectors item though (although the differences were relatively minute, especially with dampening).
