Lakland Boutique Quality for an Amazing Price!

Combining high-end features and eye-catching looks, the Lakland Skyline 55-02 Deluxe simply exudes quality. It all starts with premium tonewoods: an ash body with a stunning quilt maple top, a flat-sawn maple neck, and a roasted maple fingerboard. Its electronics are top-shelf all the way, with a versatile pickup configuration and the same preamp as Lakland’s higher-priced USA Series basses. The result is the thump, punch, and drive that you’d expect from a boutique instrument. Beyond that, its satin neck feels great, and its deep cutaway provides exceptional access to the entire fingerboard. The Skyline 55-02 Deluxe delivers classic style, amazing tone, and modern performance.

Distinctive, comfortable Lakland body design

Lakland’s Skyline 55-02 Deluxe features a distinct and recognizable body shape with a gorgeous quilt maple top. The comfortable offset-waist design has great balance and feel. The 55-02 Deluxe even gives you the same custom-contoured curves, bridge, and pickups as the original US version. That’s why you’ll find 55-02 basses the driving force behind some of the biggest touring acts in the world. Balance, comfort, and great playability are all hallmarks of the 55-02 Deluxe.

Longer scale length for tight B-string tone

Bassists at Sweetwater especially like Lakland 5-string basses because their longer 35-inch scale length holds the low B string at a higher tension. This means that your lowest notes will have more punch and impact, with more note definition, too. If you’ve played a few 5-string bass guitars, you know that some of them can sound quite flubby in the lowest registers. With the Skyline 55-02 Deluxe, your tone will stay tight and pronounced right down to the low B.

Premium active electronics

No matter what style of music you play, the Lakland MM-J pickup system will give you every tone you could want. The Skyline 55-02 Deluxe sports the same amazing pickups and preamp found on (much more expensive) USA Series basses. These active electronics give your instrument serious punch, plus extra expression across the whole fingerboard. A dual-coil MM-style humbucking pickup in the bridge gives you fat, aggressive tones. Meanwhile, the Lakland Split-coil J-style humbucking pickup in the neck position offers mellow, warm tones without any of the hum that plagues vintage designs.

Ash and maple: an ideal bass tonewood combination

Beneath its remarkable duo of active pickups, the Lakland Skyline Series 55-02 Deluxe bass features the perfect combination of tonewoods, giving you a harmonically rich and hard-hitting sound like no other. What’s more, its smoothly contoured ash body makes the Skyline 55-02 Deluxe one of the most comfortable basses you’ll ever pick up, and its solid maple neck adds extra punch and sustain to every note you play.

Skyline Series: boutique quality at an affordable price

The Skyline 55-02 Deluxe gives you amazing quality for a great price. That’s because the Skyline 55-02 Deluxe, like all Skyline Series basses, is made overseas and finished in Lakland’s stateside shop. So regardless of where it was originally made, each Skyline 55-02 Deluxe passes through the hands of Lakland’s US luthiers long before it finds its way to you. And when you add to that the fact that your Skyline 55-02 Deluxe comes equipped with the same premium appointments as its US-made cousin — we’re talking pickups, hardware, flat-sawn maple neck with graphite reinforcement bars, and more — you know you’re getting an amazing deal!

Lakland Skyline 55-02 Deluxe 5-string Bass Guitar Features:

  • An affordable custom electric bass guitar with active pickups
  • 35-inch scale length for tight B-string tone
  • Same hardware as the USA-made Lakland bass
  • Premium ash body, quilt maple top, and raosted maple fingerboard
  • Flat-sawn maple neck with graphite reinforcement bars
  • Comfortable for long gigs, whether playing standing or seated
  • Sonic versatility for any style of music

My new favorite bass

I, so far, just love this bass. I've had it for a month now.
It plays really well. The roasted neck creates some crazy long sustain and the active pick-ups sound amazing. There are so many tones that can be had with this. The phase switch for the bridge pick-up can go from a fat P Bass sound to a mid sounding Jazz bass to a Musicman sound. I adjust the tone regularly when I play depending on the song. I always would tweak just the treble. On this Lakland I find it better to tweak the mid control. I have been keeping the phase switch in the middle for the bridge pick-up to play both the neck and bridge, mostly. I've gotten several compliments on my bass tone with this from both musicians and non-musicians. I use a Phil Jones suitcase amp and line out to the PA on most of my gigs. It also sounds great with my TC Electronics RH 450 with 2-10's. I've also used this bass at a small theather with no back-line. Just straight into the board with all of us using in ear monitors only. It sounded amazing. I has a FAT sound and very clear, distinct notes. No dead spots in the tone no matter where on the neck I am playing. I haven't had a chance to try this in a studio setting yet but I feel confident I can get that fat P-Bass sound when I do. I'm sure the engineer and producers will love it too.
The cherry sunburst looks fantastic. Really stands out. The back color is great too. No complaints about it's look. It is well balanced and doesn't want to sink (too much) to the neck side. Not like my other 5 strings. It is very comfortable to play but a little heavier than I wished it could be. Use a 3 inch padded strap would be my suggestion.
It came well packed and padded in shipment and mostly playable. I had to tweak what would have been a great set-up when it arrived. See below.
The Cons:
This is on Sweetwater and not Lakland. I bought a demo model. The scratches are barely visible and I am happy with the purchase. There was 1 issue though. The G string buzzed and rattled when it arrived. It was just 1 side of the G string bridge saddle that was too low. It was an easy fix since it came with all the hex wrenches. I guess Sweetwater missed that on their 55 point inspection. Or maybe they need a 56 point inspection. Other than that I didn't feel the need for any set-up.
It has an active/passive switch which I like, but, there is no tone control in passive mode. It needs a treble control.
The fretmarkers on the side of the neck are sooo tiny and black. It is next to impossible to see them under the stage lights and in the dark theather pit. Thankfully I don't need to look often but when I do, they seem like they are not there. I had a friend make me some bigger white dots with her cricut machine.
Music background: Professional. Playing over 50 years. Gigging since I was 15 years old. BA in Performing Arts

Does your favorite bass always leave you wanting more? That's how it was for many of us at Sweetwater, until we got our hands on Lakland basses. We love these instruments because they take the iconic designs we know and kick them up a notch. When Lakland bass models go through our 55-point Evaluation, Sweetwater guitar techs can't help but notice the consistency of their superior craftsmanship - they're among the finest instruments we see. Speaking of consistency, whether you're picking up a classic 44-94 or a more affordable Skyline series model, you'll love the way these basses play, and whether you prefer boutique passive pickups or premium active electronics, look no further than Lakland.
