Crafted from medium-grade Pernambuco
The Steffen Kuhnla 1011 is crafted from Pernambuco, a wood prized for its strength, elasticity, and superior acoustic properties. The wood used for the 1011 is medium-grade, well-aged to maximize its durability, flexibility, and vibration-transmission. Moreover, it allows for precise balance and weight, both of which are crucial for high-caliber musicians. Lastly, this silver-mounted bow includes a wire grip for enhanced comfort and a secure hold, bolstered by a flexible round stick for maximum expressive control and a smooth, consistent sound.
Full-lined ebony frog for superior stability
Thanks to the added reinforcement afforded by its full-lined ebony frog, the Steffen Kuhnla 1011 is an incredibly stable violin bow, providing you with absolute control and a lock-tight connection with your instrument’s strings. Furthermore, an abalone slide and Parisian eye add a colorful touch of high-end aesthetic appeal. Beyond that, the 1011 features a robust 3-part button for exact adjustment of the bow’s hair tension.

Steffen Kuhnla: tradition trained by masters
A true German bogenmachermeister, Steffen Kuhnla is based in Markneukirchen, one of the world’s most revered centers of bow making. He apprenticed under famed master bow makers R. Messing, Carl Otto Dürrschmidt, and R. H. Leicht before earning his master bow‑making diploma in 1988. In 1989, Steffen established his own workshop, where he continues to craft and restore bows with a meticulous balance of traditional technique, acoustic insight, and refined finishing. In addition to his workshop practice, he serves as a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts in Markneukirchen, helping train the next generation of bow makers. We stand proudly behind these bows here at Sweetwater; every bow bearing the Steffen Kuhnla insignia reflects his commitment to precision craftsmanship and masterful musical expression.
