Taylor’s Classic Koa Grand Auditorium

The Taylor K24ce acoustic-electric guitar delivers all the sonic benefits of koa — a very special tonewood and a Taylor specialty. Run some single notes or strum a chord; savor the strong attack, crisp articulation, and voluptuous bloom. This impeccable Grand Auditorium guitar features a graceful Venetian cutaway with a top, back, and sides of highly figured Hawaiian koa. This K24ce features Taylor’s revolutionary V-Class bracing, which boosts volume evenly across the tonal spectrum, increases sustain, and improves the natural intonation of the instrument by creating a more synergistic response from the soundboard. This fosters a more harmonious relationship between the notes you play, helping chords to ring out in cohesive splendor. The K24ce’s tropical mahogany neck is capped by a bound ebony fingerboard with a gorgeous maple Spring Vine inlay, smartly accented by elegant stylistic touches that include maple binding and top trim, gold tuning machines, and a sumptuous Shaded Edgeburst finish.

V-Class bracing: a sonic revelation

Bracing is the internal framework of an acoustic guitar that helps shape its sound. Although X-bracing has been standard in acoustic guitars for over a century, it creates an innate conflict between two key elements of a guitar’s sound: volume and sustain. The guitar’s top (its soundboard) contributes to both. The flexibility of the top generates volume (projection), while its stiffness generates sustain. And with X-braced guitar tops, here’s where the trade-off comes in: when something is made stiffer, its flexibility is reduced (and vice versa).

V-Class bracing changes all that. With Taylor’s V-Class bracing, an acoustic guitar top can be both stiff and flexible — for more volume and sustain. V-Class bracing provides stiffness parallel to the strings for more rigidity and hence sustain. Flexibility on either side generates the air movement necessary for robust projection. It’s the best of both worlds. This groundbreaking innovation also improves intonation — not only producing notes that are louder and have longer sustain, but are also more in tune with each other. Guitarists at Sweetwater are amazed. But don’t take our word for it — pick up the superb Taylor K24ce and experience it for yourself!

Grand Auditorium body style delivers presence and comfort

The K24ce responds gracefully to a wide range of playing styles, thanks to its medium-sized Grand Auditorium body. Taylor’s beloved Grand Auditorium body style employs the width and depth of a dreadnought. However, its waist is narrower, which gives Grand Auditorium guitars a sleeker look and more treble zing. The Grand Auditorium body style also helps to focus and sharpen the definition of each note — a quality desirable in any musical genre. You’ll also find your Grand Auditorium guitar to be incredibly comfortable, whether you’re playing seated or standing.

The sonic magic of koa

For the K24ce’s top, sides, and back, Taylor uses a very special tropical hardwood sourced from Hawaiian plantations above 5,000 feet. Koa’s sonic alchemy combines the focused midrange of mahogany with the snappy high end of maple. Due to the wood’s density, koa guitars tend to start out sounding a bit bright; it’s similar to maple in this regard. Sweetwater tip: the more you play your koa guitar, the more the tone opens up, expanding the midrange and rewarding you with sweeter, richer, more resonant sonority. Oftentimes, guitarists unfamiliar with the tonewood purchase a koa guitar for its stunning visuals, don’t play it enough to allow the wood to warm up, and mistakenly conclude that it’s too bright. Fine koa guitars like the Taylor K24ce deserve to be played every day! With that said, koa’s inherent brightness is ideal for fingerpickers with a meatier touch and for studio layering where you need an acoustic guitar that cuts through the track.

Cutting-edge Taylor Expression System 2 electronics

If you play plugged in, then you’re going to love the Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) electronics onboard your K24ce. The key to this fantastic system is the 3-section proprietary pickup located behind the saddle. Because of where it’s positioned and how it’s integrated into the K24ce’s saddle, the ES2 pickup provides you with remarkably clear and accurate sound. In addition to a master Volume control, a pair of tone controls lets you tweak your highs and lows to get the sound you need, and a discrete polarity switch offers vital onboard feedback suppression.

Quite Close to Perfect

I've had the guitar about a month now with lots of practice, several gigs, and some amateur recordings to base my review on.

First, the guitar arrived in perfect order obsessively packaged for protection. Inside the two corrugated boxes was the Taylor hardshell case, red felt lined, with this beautiful piece inside. I will say it's difficult to get the true beauty of the guitar from pictures. The coat is high-shine so each angle of the burst effect has a different, almost 3D look to it. Be aware the inlay is wood, not pearl as with some top-end guitars but intricately done nonetheless. The board does have dots on the side (top) for 3/5/7/9/12 for reference. The gold Gotoh tuners are a very nice touch to round off the whole package.

In playing the guitar I've found the resonance to be almost unnatural. Strike a note, move on to others, and it'll ring for an eternity. The low end has more depth than my 314 model and so far the high end is really bright. I've read that the Koa wood will "mellow" the sound over time so I'm curious to see what it does. Strumming is where the piece shines I think since you get the full range of lows to highs. No complaints on picking however. The action is a little higher than other Taylors I've played but can be adjusted via the truss rod for those knowledgeable. Finally, I was initially wary of the new electronics given I've been used to the Fishman preamps for so long. No regrets. The knobs are simple to be sure, but the internals are all top notch and deliver the same unplugged sound through the equipment. Be careful with the strap. If unplugged there's not a lot to hold the back of the guitar and I've worried about dropping it.

All around a stellar work of art both aesthetically and acoustically and worth every penny. A real investment for those looking to stand out in the crowd.

Amazing!

I've bought electric guitars online, but never acoustic guitars.... I have zero regrets buying this taylor online! It came in perfect condition, in tune strait from the box! The KOA sounds sooooooo good! I have a 714ce that sounds great, but this is on a whole different level. I play this guitar at solo gigs almost every weekend and it handles it like a champ! If you can afford the monthly payments with 48 months no intrest BUY IT!!!!!
