Upgraded Jackson 5-string Bass Value

The Jackson JS Series Spectra Bass JS3V packs plenty of punch — and sleek looks to boot — with its poplar body, maple neck, and active humbucking pickups. Upgraded with a HiMass bridge, two Jackson active humbuckers, and coil-split circuitry, the Spectra Bass JS3V makes it easy to dial in the perfect tone for any gig or recording session. And for a commanding feel, the thin “U” profile neck is topped with a smooth compound-radius laurel fingerboard and jumbo frets for effortless playability, with the added range of a tight and responsive low B — courtesy of the instrument’s 35-inch scale length. If you’re looking for a seriously gigable 5-string bass at a great price, look no further than the Jackson JS Series Spectra Bass JS3V.

Compound-radius fingerboard for ultimate playability

The JS Series Spectra Bass JS3V features a 12–16-inch compound-radius fingerboard for ultimate playability. The laurel fingerboard is rounder near the nut for holding down the groove. As you head up to the solo range of the instrument, the radius flattens out for easier runs and string bends.

Powerful electronics let you tweak your tone to perfection

Jackson stocks the JS Series Spectra Bass JS3V with two medium-output active humbucking pickups, positioned to capture the fullest tone possible. With coil splitting and 3-band EQ, you can sculpt your tone any way you see fit. Whether you’re recording soulful R&B or trying to cut through a speed-metal mix onstage, the Spectra Bass JS3V has the tone-shaping power you need. And the active electronics provide plenty of output to drive long cable runs, your effects chain, and your amp.

Built with unbeatable Jackson quality

Jackson’s JS series incorporates Jackson’s three-plus decades of instrument-building expertise, and the Spectra Bass JS3V is no exception. You get resonant tonewoods, high-output electronics, and a fast neck with a silky-smooth fingerboard, all at a price that belies its performance. Many guitarists and bassists at Sweetwater (and worldwide) are fiercely loyal Jackson players. Check out the JS Series Spectra Bass JS3V and you’ll know why.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While Certified Open Box items from Jackson do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!

Reviews

Perfect for first time 5 string players!
I've been a 4 string player for 25 years and decided it was finally time to give a 5 string bass a try. I didn't want to break the bank, but knew what features I wanted; 35" scale length, active/passive toggle, and a humbucker/split coil switch. Personally I think this bass sounds great with minimal EQ tweaks, the 3 band EQ isn't as moldable as you might think, and when playing in dual humbucking mode I typically just add a bit of bass boost and that's it. When in passive mode the neck pickup sounds great with the coil split, these are 2 tones I can definitely use, but this bass isn't the SWISS ARMY knife of tones it's marketed as, so keep that in mind. After a quick set-up after receiving it, I love the way it plays. Out the box the action was too high as well as the neck relief, but it took me less than 20 minutes to get it where I like it. The hardware and bridge are great quality, a smokey black color, nice and beefy, and it holds it's tuning. There is noticable neck dive depending on how it's angled on your knee, but that's never been a make-or-break thing for me personally, and with a strap it sits perfectly on your body. The longer scale length keeps the B string snappy and consistent with the other strings, I've barely needed to add any compression in my amp. I will say I do find the lighter colored wood on the neck as well as the binding to be a bit concerning because it seems like they'll be a dirt and ding magnet, especially if I gig with it, but so far I'm having an absolute blast with it and it's definitely opening my eyes to a whole new world of bass playing. This bass is definitely worth the price and is giggable and recordable.
Pretty Solid Bass
For some background on me, I am the bassist for my highschool jazz band, and I've been using school instruments and borrowing stuff from friends for the two years I've been playing bass. This was my first 5 string (although I have played a 6 before). I genuinely really enjoy playing it, it sounds great, the one complaint I have is that the neck is kinda chunky, aside from that it's absolutely fantastic.
Music background: Highschool jazz bassist, concert and marching euphonium player
Try it & you'll probably buy it...just sayin'
Since I'm a trumpet player who fills-in on bass once in a while, I didn't really need a high-end pro-bass. However, I used to own a $2000 custom made high-end Carvin...so I'm still pretty picky on solid feel & sound.

Yesterday I walked into the Sweetwater showroom, and the salespeople were there immediately...and they really do know their stuff. Within 5 minutes, the guy not only found what I was looking for...he found me a mint-condition Demo model, saving me $. I was hooked on this bass from the first note played. Bought yesterday...gigged on it today.

Compared to my old Carvin...

VERY similar feel to my high-end Carvin...and has the exact same hardware as the Carvin. Great sound, great feel to the electronics and tuning nobs.

I would say the main differences would be that the Jackson body is less heavy (but not cheap feeling), the tone is great with fantastic active-controls, but the note-duration is a little less than the Carvin (probably due to body density, and the Carvin was a neck-through body design).

Conclusion...Compared to my high-end Carvin costing $2000...to me, this feels & plays in a way that's worth $. I don't see any reason why I'll ever need another bass.
Music background: Classical Trumpet, Jazz Trumpet & Vocals, Bluegrass Bass/Vocals, Worship Bass & Vocals, Modern Country/Rock Keyboard & Vocal Harmonies, Elementary Music Teacher, Digital Audio Editing
This is the one!
The finishing details of this bass are unreal for this price. Flawless fretwork. The body looks amazing. There are no defects. The pickups sound great in active and passive mode. Humbucking and coil tap make this bass really versatile. I can get it really close to P bass, jazz bass and stingray territory all while having its own flavour.
I rarely use the 3 band EQ as the preamp sounds perfect flat but it's nice to have it if I chose to use.
If you are a new player or a long time player looking for something different give this one a shot.
Jackson Spectra JS3V
First of all it arrived in 2 days from ordering. wow thars fast. and it sounds better than my 4 string that cost just over twice what the Jackson did. I have been playing it for 20 days and love it. I'm most impressed with the quality of the sound.
