Signature 7-string Multi-act Mayhem

Few contemporary guitarists in the rock and metal scenes can match the diversity of Jason Richardson’s musical résumé. He's worked alongside acts that include Born of Osiris, Chelsea Grin, All Shall Perish, Polyphia, Veil of Maya, and All That Remains, where he currently takes the helm as lead guitarist. Coupled with his extensive solo career, the common denominator is heavy, technical, brutal riffage, and Sterling by Music Man answered the call for a signature model tailored for seven strings of tonal terror. The Richardson7 is loaded with locking tuners, a Modern Tremolo, and high-output humbuckers to deliver searing sizzle, with a push-push volume boost and coil-tap tone controls to extend your dynamic range and add sonorous sustain. A poplar burl-topped alder body is secured to a roasted maple neck and rosewood fingerboard, delivering a sonic profile with a loaded low end and crisp highs. Sweetwater’s guitar gurus concur that the Richardson7 is an ideal choice for those looking to pair thundering breakdowns with ripping leads on a 7-string menace.

An aural assemblage

Luthiers at Sterling had their work cut out for them to deliver a versatile instrument that would hold up to heaviest aural assaults. Poplar burl tops the body, balanced in overall tonal support with a slight inclination toward the middle and higher registers. The alder body beneath it makes up the difference with rich, warm lows, fierce mids, and resounding sustain. A roasted maple neck complements the alder’s sustaining qualities with a balanced projection, tight across every register with excellent note separation and a permeating brightness. Rosewood makes up the fingerboard, adding its iconic glassy luster, alongside a saccharine voicing that never gets muddy. Taken together, these tonewoods blend substance, presence, and crystalline clarity to keep your sound well defined without sacrificing force.

Versatile tonal control

Sterling’s house-made humbuckers are engineered to handle high-heat and subtlety, all the same. Individual control knobs for volume and tone are accompanied by a 3-way selector switch, but the fine-tuning doesn’t stop there. A push-push volume toggle loads in 12dB of boost at a moment’s notice. The tone knob pulls double duty for coil-tap tone control. With a tremendously expanded dynamic range, bolstered sustain, and coil-splitting whenever you need it, you’ve got the freedom to dial in your perfectly personal sound.

Maximum expression

Roasted maple isn’t just great for its tonal qualities. As a neck wood, its structural resistance and roasted qualities make it highly resilient to twisting and warping, making it a great choice for gigging musicians, those on the road, and anyone in a tropical climate. A sleek profile and 16-inch fingerboard radius mean this axe is comfortable, accommodating, and designed to shred with room for all seven strings. The 5-bolt attachment ensures structural and tonal security with unfettered access to all 24 frets on the rosewood fingerboard. The modern tremolo provides maximum expressive potential, from subtle sway to destructive divebombs. This makes locking tuners a welcome addition, bookending the 25.5-inch scale with tonal reinforcement, letting you focus on what matters most: the music.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

Reviews

A GREAT Guitar for the money, or just a great guitar!

This is my first venture into the 7 string world, so I didn't have a lot of reference besides my 6 string collection. I got this guitar on a closeout, open box, demo, good guy, "my rep likes me more than yours likes you" deal, so I got a little more than a "starter" 7 string.

I messed up and didn't pay enough attention, and I was surprised that this guitar had a floating bridge vs a HT. I was drunk on the crazy good price, and forgot to see if it wiggled or stayed put at the bridge. (for the record, I do not like floating bridges, and nearly all my other guitars are fixed tails for extended tunability)

This body is one of the most comfortable I have played. It is a little heavier than I prefer, but that is my personal issue, and not this 7.5# guitar.

This guitar has moved from Indiana to Colorado, at 6k ft, no humidity. I have had it a couple of weeks now, and it is starting to settle in and climatize. Not much fret sprout for me to knock down, so the roasted neck really was roasted out dry. Many "roasted" necks are colored by that process but not depleted of any instability, really. I can tell this is a very dry, stable neck, and it holds tune pretty well.

The active pickups are voiced pretty good, but they are not my favorites. The db boost of +12 on the volume knob is cool to have, and the profile of the neck and body make you want to play this guitar a lot. It is very sleek and polished feeling. Very impressed with the fit and finish of this one. I really like Indo-made guitars from the Cortech factory.

Overall, this is a really nice guitar, with a great feel and a good (enough) sound to enjoy playing. This could easily be someone's gigging workhorse guitar. You can literally do anything with it!
