Vintage Vibe with a Vintera II

One look at the Fender Vintera II ’60s Jazz Bass, and it’s clear the 1960s are alive and well. Radiating classic J Bass earmarks and undeniable Fender style, this bass supplies you with a resonant alder body and a bolted-on maple neck capped with slab rosewood. You’ll easily find the groove with this axe’s vintage-style ’60s single-coil Jazz Bass pickups that let you sink your musical teeth into timeless tone. A bevy of other inspiring features, like an early ’60s “C” neck shape, vintage-style open-gear tuning machines, and 4-saddle vintage-style bridge with threaded steel saddles, outfits this bass for classic style and modern performance. Uncompromising punch, supreme playability, and traditional aesthetics — it’s all here in Fender’s Vintera II line!

Inspired by Fender’s golden era

The Vintera II ’60s Jazz Bass merges classic Fender methods and modern-day production quality, offering you the best of both worlds. The experts at Fender started with a tonewood pairing of alder, maple, and rosewood — the bedrock of grooves since the Jazz Bass’s first incarnation. You’ll glide effortlessly along the 7.25-inch radius rosewood fingerboard and early ‘60s “C”-shape neck. The punch and clarity of this bass are unreal — merged with other features like vintage-style open-gear tuners, 4-saddle vintage-style bridge with threaded steel saddles, and 20 vintage-tall frets, the Vintera II ’60s Jazz Bass is ready for prime time.

Two single-coils deliver classic J Bass tone

What’s going on under the hood? Like many Jazz Bass incarnations, the Vintera II ’60s Jazz Bass offers a duo of single-coils. With these pickups stationed in the bridge and middle positions and the instrument’s 3-pot setup, the J Bass has been the purveyor of some of the most legendary bass tones in modern music history. Ready to ride, these vintage-style ’60s pickups recall the tones of yesteryear yet perform with modern capabilities. Strike up a groove, and you’ll be treated to expressive tone that’s warm, woody, dynamic, and full of J Bass power. Not to mention, these pickups have an incredible range of tonal capabilities. Jazz, funk, blues, rock, fusion — and yes, even metal — this bass can cover it all.

Join the ranks of Jazz Bass players

Pick up the Fender Vintera II ’60s Jazz Bass and you’ve got affordable entrée into the company of some of the greatest bass players of all time. World-renowned bassists such as Jaco Pastorius, Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, John Paul Jones, and Victor Bailey all chose the J Bass as their go-to axe. Sweetwater’s advice: If you want the iconic round and punchy, growling J Bass sound along with effortless playability — and an amazing value, to boot — pick up the Fender Vintera II ’60s Jazz Bass and drive your music with legendary tone.

Why Buy Your Guitar from Sweetwater?

See how Sweetwater goes to great lengths to give you the very best online guitar buying experience. From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from Fender do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

It doesn't get any better!

I can't say enough about this bass! I had it extensively customized by Sweetwater before shipping (and they nailed it perfectly!), so I can't claim everyone will have the same out of the box experience I did, but even without the customizations, it's an extremely solid instrument. The upgrades were just the icing on the cake.

Fender really nailed the 60's specs on this one. I have several original 60s Fenders, and this one not only looks the part, but it feels like one in my hands as well. Fender nailed the famously comfortable 60's Jazz Bass neck perfectly. This bass plays like butter! Although it's referred to generically as a 60's bass, based on the feature set I would say it most closely resembles an instrument that would have been available around '61 or '62.

I've seen complaints that this bass is overpriced for a Mexican instrument, but this is a quality instrument wherever it was built. The mechanical assembly is perfect, no off-center bridge or other build issues that have been known to plague some of the Mexican builds. The neck is solid piece of maple with close, straight grains, I'm confident it will be straight and stable for many years to come ( I add that because it wasn't necessarily always true even on the originals).

It is true that the Mexican guitars occasionally lapse on the fit and finish, frequently out of the box they need a trip to the luthier for a fret level and crown, and filing down sprouting fret ends. I don't know if that's still true on this line, not wanting to take any chances I took the precaution of getting it PLEKed and setup before being before shipping, and I'm glad I did. The action on this bass is as fast as on any I've ever played, at any price.

Although the stock pickups are just fine, I wanted something with a bit more punch, so I had them replaced with 60s Custom Shop pickups. This bass sounds great! Think of the sound JPJ gets on the first 4 Zeppelin albums, and you get the picture. This bass sustains for days, even with flat-wound strings (TI Jazz Flats) on it!

The bottom line is that, as a tool for making music, it doesn't get any better than this. You can get an American Fender with fancier hardware, and a little more attention to cosmetics, but none of that affects the playing experience. I generally prefer the Mexican Fenders to the American ones, as they tend to hew closer to Leo Fender's original designs. Although out of the box they tend to arrive a little rough around the edges, with a little TLC they bloom into funky little Cinderellas, with a character that seems to have disappeared from the American line.

My only complaint is that two days after I ordered it Sweetwater started including $ in bonus bucks with the purchase. My own fault, I suppose. I was too impatient to get hold of it to wait for a sale. But no regrets - I love this bass!

I got this bass in Lake Placid Blue, which as a metallic finish is notoriously hard to photograph. The picture gives the impression the bass is an anemic light blue, but in the flesh it's a rich blue sparkle finish, consistent with other Fender LPB guitars. It looks as good as it sounds!

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too! From building the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the 1950s to creating some of the most influential amplifier designs in history, it’s no wonder why Fender is one of the biggest names in the business. As one of the world’s largest Fender dealers, we have countless guitars, basses, amps, effects pedals, and accessories in stock and ready to ship, whenever you need them. We’re always getting our hands on their latest creations, and there’s nothing we love more than to tell our customers all about them! So, whether you’re looking for your first axe or a Custom Shop creation, make sure to give your Sweetwater Sales Engineer a call at (800) 222-4700.
