The Ultimate Production 5-string J-Bass

The American Ultra neckplate graces Fender’s top-of-the-line production instruments — their most advanced series of guitars and basses for discerning players who demand the ultimate in precision, performance, and tone. The Fender American Ultra Jazz Bass V delivers the same iconic vintage vibe and visuals as its ancestors. But play a few notes and you’ll quickly realize that this is a state-of-the-art, high-performance axe. The contoured offset alder body balances beautifully and always feels just right; while the fast, comfortable Modern "D" neck profile, compound-radius fingerboard, and tapered neck heel turbocharge your playing. Amazing-sounding Fender Ultra Noiseless Vintage Jazz Bass pickups and active 3-band electronics complete the setup.

State-of-the-art performance, vintage-inspired tone

Plug into your amp or interface and you’ll savor legendary, punchy Jazz Bass tone with the added range of a tight, responsive low B string that extends the versatility of this masterful instrument. You’ll get zero hum, thanks to a dynamic duo of Ultra Noiseless Vintage Jazz Bass single-coil pickups. The pickup arrangement gives you the low-end punch from the middle-position pickup, along with the aggressive growl from the bridge pickup. Mix up your signature blend, and you’re ready to roll. Whether it’s rock, funk, blues, country, or fusion; the Fender American Ultra Jazz Bass V has you covered.

Fender’s revolutionary Noiseless circuitry eliminates the signal noise and hum that are inherent in vintage single-coil pickup designs. You can plug the American Ultra Jazz Bass V into anything — from old-school tube combos to digital modeling software — and you’ll experience vintage-inspired tone with the level of performance you expect from cutting-edge modern electronics. The American Ultra Jazz Bass V is equipped with an 18-volt active preamp for optimized headroom and punch. The control layout includes a pickup pan pot; 3-band EQ that lets you quickly shape your tone for any genre, live gig, or studio session; a passive tone control, and a mini toggle switch to disengage the active electronics.

Classic design with high-performance features

The American Ultra Jazz Bass V’s performance-driven features extend to the neck in a big way. While its all-maple construction and eye-catching Fender headstock logo look standard enough, run up the fingerboard and you’ll know there’s a lot more going on. This instrument boasts an easy-playing 10"–14" compound-radius fingerboard with 21 medium-jumbo frets that’s perfect for grooving down low and soloing up high; while rolled and bound fingerboard edges supply endless hours of playing comfort.

The famously fast, slender neck on the American Ultra Jazz Bass V sports Fender’s Modern D profile, which, along with its super-slick Ultra Satin finish, enables enhanced maneuverability. One of our favorite elements of the American Ultra Jazz Bass V here at Sweetwater is its tapered neck heel. Play it and you’ll understand — this perfectly sculpted heel gives you effortless access to the entire fingerboard, while the new 5-bolt neck plate provides an advanced neck join for optimized tone with prodigious sustain. The American Ultra Jazz Bass V is a player’s dream come true.

Why Buy Your Guitar from Sweetwater?

See how Sweetwater goes to great lengths to give you the very best online guitar buying experience. From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from Fender do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

FENDER ULTRA V JAZZ BASS

It is beautifully made gorgeous rich colors. Well made resonates with great tone. Neck and cutaway make it easy to play and reach notes in the higher part of the neck.

No Complaints

The Ultra V is a great playing, great sounding instrument. I got The Ultraburst finish. The neck plays faster than my Modulus, which I did not think was possible. It has the best slap tone I've heard. Top notch craftsmanship and playability. It's worth the money, in my opinion.

All That Jazz and More!

I was seriously considering the American Pro Jazz V yet something told me to step up and get the Ultra J Bass. So happy I did go with the Ultra as it plays like a dream. I also have so much tone control going from Passive mode to Active. You can dial in wherever you need. The playability of this Bass is off the hook as tha neck maintains that modern D all the way up and down the neck. I'm not a fan of the compound C to D necks so this Bass keeping the D shape makes playing way up the neck a joy! This Bass is balanced nicely and looks great. Sweetwater Rep David Brehm is a total Pro and a person of integrity and I highly recommend this Ultraburst Bass and dealing with David at Sweetwater!

Phenomenal Bass, With One Caveat

I've had this bass for a few days now, and am totally satisfied with the build quality and the tones this thing puts out! This is the best neck I've ever played, and it's not even close. The three band EQ is highly effective, and I'm glad the passive switch is there in the case that a battery runs low during a rehearsal or a gig.

All this to say... I believe the bridge Fender is installing on these basses needs a redesign. There is so much material between the string and the body of the guitar, that to get reasonably low action may require a neck shim. I like to set my string heights at 0.090" (treble) to 0.100" (bass), which was not possible due to the G and B string saddles bottoming out. I installed a small neck shim which resolved the issue, but other buyers might not be so enthusiastic about a $ bass needing this kind of modification. Buyer beware is all I'm saying.

Otherwise I'm totally impressed with this bass, and look forward to gigging with it.

Whatever tone and style your heart desires

Overall not a bad bass!! The neck feels great with the compound radius, and the preamp tone is an improvement over their past offerings... however, my only true complaint is the preamp does not have unity gain when switching from passive to active with the eq knobs centered, there is a noticeable boost. No complaints with passive tones.
Strictly to my light playing style, I’m not able to lower the action for the G string below 1.5mm with the factory bridge, even with tightening the truss rod to 0.005 ( my preferred relief). I prefer light strings and this bass definitely comes with 45-105’s. Lighter strings won’t fix the action issue, but will absolutely feel better under my fingers than mediums.

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too! From building the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the 1950s to creating some of the most influential amplifier designs in history, it’s no wonder why Fender is one of the biggest names in the business. As one of the world’s largest Fender dealers, we have countless guitars, basses, amps, effects pedals, and accessories in stock and ready to ship, whenever you need them. We’re always getting our hands on their latest creations, and there’s nothing we love more than to tell our customers all about them!
