The Latest Incarnation of the Venerable J Bass

The Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass V takes a tried-and-true design and complements it with modern updates. The latest incarnation of a groundbreaking instrument, this 5-string electric bass guitar boasts a balanced-sounding alder body, which pairs nicely with the classic punch provided by its V-Mod II single-coil pickups. Playing this J Bass is an absolute joy — its fast, comfortable Slim C-shaped neck, smooth rolled fingerboard, and sculpted neck heel are guaranteed to elevate your playing. Tapered-shaft tuners and a HiMass vintage bridge round out the American Pro II J Bass V’s player-friendly features. The American Pro II Jazz Bass V was designed from the ground up to offer you an ideal gigging and recording instrument.

One of the best necks in the business

Many bass players (including a bevy of us here at Sweetwater) believe that J Basses boast some of the best necks ever. And, thanks to its to-die-for Slim C shape, the American Pro II Jazz Bass V’s neck doesn’t disappoint. This ultra-comfortable profile fills your hand perfectly, while leaving enough wiggle room to facilitate effortless playability. The American Professional II Jazz Bass V sports smooth rolled fingerboard edges and a Super-Natural satin finish, ensuring that this is one J Bass that you won’t want to put down. You’ll also appreciate the American Pro II J Bass V's sculpted neck heel, which provides a comfortable feel and easy access to this electric bass guitar’s upper register.

Simple and effective electronics

Jazz Basses boast a 2-pickup setup, allowing you to pursue diverse tonal variations. The single-coils and the bass's 3-knob setup have been responsible for a wide array of some of the most legendary bass tones in history. The Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass V sticks close to its heritage with a duet of V-Mod II single-coil pickups. Designed by pickup guru Tim Shaw, these single-coil pickups exhibit the same warmth and clarity as their predecessor, while adding extra articulation and all the J Bass punch you can handle.

Player-friendly appointments

Though the American Professional II Jazz Bass V looks and feels like a familiar friend, it's loaded with features that enhance both playability and tone. One of the most notable features is its 5-saddle HiMass vintage-style bridge. This bridge's rigid construction works in concert with this 5-string electric bass guitar’s bone nut to transfer more of the string's energy to the body of the instrument, enhancing its sustain and articulation. And the American Pro II Jazz Bass V’s tapered-shaft tuner design ensures you have optimal break angle and tension on your string posts.

Fender American Professional II Jazz Bass V Features:

  • Tried-and-true J Bass design with player-friendly updates
  • 2 V-Mod II single-coil pickups offer classic punch with added articulation
  • Alder body delivers a balanced sound
  • Slim C neck profile with Super-Natural satin finish is fast and comfortable
  • Rolled fingerboard edges provide a smooth playing experience
  • Sculpted neck heel provides a comfortable feel and easy access to upper register
  • Tapered-shaft tuners keep proper tension on your string posts
  • HiMass vintage bridge adds sustain and articulation

I finally went five strings...

I'd been a four-stringer since 1976. When I found my mid-90s MIJ 4-string Fender P-Bass Lyte back in 1998, I thought I had it made. Here lately, though, on stage and in the studio, I kept noticing the need to adjust the EQ to get rid of "klank" and add bottom. I knew I wanted to try flats for that reason, but I also thought a fer-real Jazz bass with flats would be the ticket. And I wanted to switch to five strings anyway, so I pulled the trigger. SO NOT SORRY. First of all this axe is gorgeous. Also, it is a perfect a machine as one could ask for - fit, finish, intonation - all spot on. Now, to get used to the wider neck and the extra string. To my awesome Sweetwater Sales Engineer Matt: Sorry I made you jealous by scooping up this axe.

There’s a new kid in town

In the short time I've owned it this bass has quickly moved to the front of the pack. With 6 other basses to choose from this jazz bass makes the choice real easy. I'm a long time precision bass player and I love the precision bass tone but as my career has progressed I realized I needed a bass that was more versatile and able to handle anything from pop rock to hippie jam and bluegrass. This bass sounds great in every situation, with a turn of a knob I can fall into the mix or cut through the mix for some slap funk/lead runs.

All I ever wanted in a Fender 5 string Jazz bass

This bass just nails it! I've had a 5 string Elite for awhile and always felt like it was missing something. It's a nice enough bass but it just didn't capture the Jazz sound and feel for me. B string was ok. But this American Professional II Jazz V has me blown away. The B string is just right for me. Sound and feel makes me happy to play it. I'm picky and often disappointed with Jazz bass models not quite getting it right from Fender to boutique basses. I'm happy and delighted this bass is so good. The neck feels so smooth and right. Anyway, it's an outstanding instrument. Fender got the 5 string Jazz down now, as far as I'm concerned.
