Killer Schecter 5-string Bass with Retro Styling

For killer performance and retro styling, it's hard to top the Schecter J-5. Expect loads of natural resonance and tone, thanks to an alder body and maple neck. Plug in, and you'll take this classic tone to new heights, by way of USA MonsterTone-J pickups. As for comfort, after wrapping your hand around this bass's Thin "C" neck, you'll have a really hard time putting it down. This bass also includes an easy-playing 16"-radius maple fingerboard with 21 Narrow X-jumbo frets and a Graph Tech XL ivory TUSQ nut. The Schecter J-5 boasts string-through and top load options, along with eye-catching black hardware.

Natural tone and resonance

The Schecter J-5 is chock-full of natural tone, thanks to its alder body and maple neck. The alder delivers the solid, balanced sound you've heard on countless classic recordings, with equal doses of lows, mids, and highs. The maple injects this resonant tone with ear-popping brightness and incredible sustain. At Sweetwater, we appreciate a bass that produces great-sounding tone — even before you plug it in!

USA MonsterTone-J pickups

As great as the J-5 sounds acoustically, it was built to be plugged in — and you won't be disappointed! Its USA MonsterTone-J pickups perfectly replicate the look and performance of Schecter's original late-1970s design, by virtue of original-vendor vulcanized fiberboard bobbin construction and eight 0.25"-diameter high-carbon steel pole pieces. Beyond that, you get direct-coupled high-strength ceramic 8 magnet and proprietary-wound USA-made magnet wire. Two distinctly numbered coils per pickup unlock new universes of tone via coil-tapping, which you can activate with the J-5's push-pull tone knob.

Easy-playing maple neck

Pick up the Schecter J-5, and you'll experience extreme comfort, thanks to its Thin "C" neck carve. Its 35" scale injects your playing with additional punch, attack, and definition. Beyond that, the neck's dense, strong construction offers incredible sustain and stability. And for the ultimate in easy playability, its 16"-radius maple fingerboard is loaded with 21 Narrow X-jumbo frets and a Graph Tech XL ivory TUSQ nut.

Great Tone and Feel

I sold a Musicman Stingray 5, I was happy with the bass, but was looking for a passive more simple setup. I also wanted to have a unique look, along with distinct tone and awesome play-ability. I saw this bass and was a littlew sceptical, but went and tried one at a local music store. It was good, but the strings were high, intonation was out of wack and they wanted to charge me a couple hundred for the basics.

I have ordered from Sweetwater before and took a look. Two days later delivered!

I plugged it into my new Markbass 102 Pure amp and it was as though I found GOLD! The bass delivers! It is easy to play, simple passive setup while delivering the tone I have been searching for! NO MORE BATTERIES! I love the color and the maple neck feels amazing! I they had another maple neck color, I'd get another, so instead, I bought the P-5!

I can't say enough good things about this bass. My band loves the look and the tone! Thank you Schecter and Sweetwater! I am a customer and a Schecter player for life!

Great bass!

I have been in search of a 5 string that I like but just wasn't finding anything that felt and sounded really good. I found this on a recent visit to Sweetwater and fell in love. This bass plays really well, feels great and sounds amazing. The coil tap is kind of useless because of the drop in volume, but there is plenty of usable tone without it!

This is a surprisingly good bass.

I needed a five-string bass that made Jazz Bass noises, but I didn't really need to be laying down American Jazz Bass V money for something I wasn't sure I'd like. This bass plays as well as any of my other basses, including several Music Man basses and a Modulus Quantum 5. There is some 60-cycle hum, but it's not intolerable. The 35" scale is very comfortable to me since I go back and forth between 34" and 35" scale basses regularly. The only possible caveats are the narrower than usual string spacing and the significant volume drop with the coil tap. Those are hardly deal breakers, though; and the bass is just really, really fun to play. I only really notice the string spacing when switching from the Schecter to one of my four-stringed basses, and only then for a few moments. Buy one.
