Advanced Semi-weighted 49-note Controller Keyboard

MIDI-based musicians — are you ready to expand your performance horizons? Sweetwater is excited to introduce the Nektar Impact GXP49. Nektar has created a new instrument category here: an advanced 49-note MIDI controller with full-sized, semi-weighted velocity- and aftertouch-sensing keys and everything else you need in a serious studio or stage controller keyboard. The Impact GXP49 ticks all the boxes — proper pitch and mod wheels; dual-footswitch and expression pedal jacks; selectable velocity curves; 14 RGB LED buttons; 5-pin MIDI out; USB bus power; and more.

Aftertouch for expressive performances

Not every keyboardist needs or wants piano-weighted keys. The Impact GXP49’s newly designed and carefully balanced semi-weighted keyboard action feels great for playing virtual drums, synths, and orchestral instruments as well as piano. And it’s got aftertouch — a rare commodity in this price range — which allows you to lean into your notes for tasty vibrato, filter sweeps, or whatever you have it assigned to. And all this advanced functionality is packed into a sleek, compact, gig-ready lightweight chassis that looks fantastic in your studio or stage rig.

Advanced DAW integration that just works

The Impact GXP49’s streamlined control panel is based on Nektar’s successful Impact GX series, and in keeping with Nektar’s advanced DAW integration philosophy, it offers extended transport control, track selection, and volume control as well as options to open and close DAW windows and navigate songs. For those who have never used a Nektar controller, the best news is that this is all automatic. You simply download and install the free DAW Integration file for your DAW and voilà — everything just works!

Assignable illuminated RGB buttons

What’s more, GXP49’s user interface also has 14 assignable illuminated RGB buttons for direct MIDI program- and bank-selection. Nektar’s new Key Repeat engine adds an intuitive real-time tool for spicing your music with inspired rhythmic patterns. You can control the Repeat feature directly from the GXP49’s illuminated RGB buttons. Once Repeat mode is engaged, the buttons allow for direct selection of Repeat Rates, Accent, Interval, Swing, and routing aftertouch or modulation to velocity. While Repeat is active, the second encoder becomes a dedicated tempo control, unless you’ve set synchronization to external MIDI clock.

Advanced control of your plug-in instruments

Nektarine is a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plug-in that allows advanced Nektar control of your plug-in instruments from Nektar’s flagship Panorama controllers and the Impact GXP49. Nektarine gives the GXP49 powerful master keyboard functionality, with 16 slots for up to 16 VST or AU instrument plug-ins available for simultaneous use. The GXP49 brings instant patch recall to hybrid or entirely software-based keyboard setups with direct patch control from GXP49’s RBG patch buttons and the ability to define keyboard zones, layers, and splits for all hosted plug-ins. You can save your plug-in settings and combinations in a single Multi-patch for recall at the touch of a button. GXP49 works with any MIDI software on macOS, Windows, and iOS and can also be used as a standard MIDI controller for legacy MIDI gear right out of the box.

A Great Midi Keyboard For The Price

So far, it's an excellent keyboard. Since I am a beginner musician, I cannot compare the quality of this keyboard to others such as an M-Audio 49 keyboard, but it provides what I'm looking for all in one package. The keys are semi-weighted, meaning there's some pressure present in pushing on the keys and is a good learning curve for me. For those picky about the key feel, it has a clanky noise, but it doesn't bother me all that much. The arrangement options work well, the LED lights are super pretty for the buttons, and it comes with a MIDI output port alongside USB so I can connect it to other hardware if I wanted to. The design is sleek, lightweight, and works well for learning music theory and composition.

For the product itself, I give it five stars. However, when it comes to Nektar's customer service and software bundle packages, I would give it less than five stars at least. The Bitwig 8 Track inclusion (which was an unexpected surprise for me) was easy to use and install, and it works well with integrating with the keyboard. As for the Cubase LE and Retrologue 2 VST package, you have to go through Nektar's system to receive the serial number for the download. They're pretty slow to respond, putting people on an automated basis for responding to orders and cases. I have not received my serial number yet, and it's been over 48 hours since I processed the order, but maybe I'm being impatient. It'd be easier to purchase the DAW you want to try out rather than try the demos they provide, at least in Nektar's case.

As for Sweetwater, they're pretty amazing for their selection of products and delivery service. I haven't really tried their customer service, but when it comes to ordering products from them, their system for processing orders and keeping customers up to date is just excellent and highly reassuring. So, keeping the five stars cause most of the issues I've experienced are related to the brand company that makes the product and not Sweetwater. I will definitely purchase from Sweetwater again. :)

So far so good

I wanted something with aftertouch and this seemed like a good option. Haven't checked out all it's features but so far I'm happy.

Great MIDI Controller

I'm a guitar player, not a keyboardist. I had a Mini Moog back in "The Day" but about all I remember from that is where the C key is located. But I do a lot of recording on my DAW and although I can get a lot of awesome and strange effects from my guitars and pedals, I thought a MIDI would give me another dimension to my music. Yep, sure did. I wanted a reputable mid-sized MIDI with semi-weighted/velocity keys and octave and transpose features and this Nektar GXP49 gives me that and more. It has a lot of features that I may never use. It is lightweight but solidly built. It has powered USB, alternative 9V, MIDI Out, Expression Pedal and Footswitch jacks on the back, plus the on/off switch. It has a lot of back-lighted buttons that look cool too. It fit seamlessly with my DAW, was easy to sync-up and is basically plug and play. I know a guy who would say I play keys like a guitar player but that's ok!

Almost

I originally purchased the GXP 49 ,but decided that I wanted to have more keys as I am used to 88's.
Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, it has not yet arrived.
Due to things beyond our control [Sweetwater's and mine] it is now approximately 8 days late in arriving. I am expecting the 61 key version of this unit and hopefully it will get here soon. If the new one is like the old one in feel and performance, I shall be pleased, but right now, I don't know. I.E. … "Almost!"
