Comfortable, Accurate Mix Headphones

Like the NS-10s before them, Yamaha's HPH-MT7 Studio Monitor Headphones are designed to cast a white-hot spotlight on the problem areas of your audio. From the studio to the stage, these high-performance cans will help put the finishing touches on your mixes and paint your source material in a realistic light. Yamaha HPH-MT7s are loaded with full-range 40mm neodymium dynamic drivers for accurate sound reproduction across the entire audible spectrum. Their comfortable ABS headband, ear cups, and pads are designed to stand up to long mixing hours. The Yamaha HPH-MT7s include a carry bag, 10-foot detachable cable, and 1/4" adapter.

Closed-back, circumaural design

There are two factors at play here: the closed-back earcups, and a circumaural (around-the-ear) design. The closed backs mean your Yamaha HPH-MT7 Studio Monitor Headphones offer increased isolation from outside sources, suiting them to stage use where you're surrounded by loud audio. Their circumaural design means they seal around the ears to create the big bass needed for mixing applications.

Should I mix with headphones?

Monitoring in a reliable, treated environment with speakers you trust is always going to trump mixing on headphones. But today's mixing headphones have gotten so advanced that, for audio folks without a great room and reliable speakers, they're sometimes a better alternative. Take the Yamaha HPH-MT7s. These headphones are built for mixing from the ground up. Their drivers and ear cups have been designed to eliminate extraneous resonance, ensuring that what you hear in your HPH-MT7s remains true to the audio source. Headphones also have the added advantage of being portable — mix at the beach or at the coffee shop if you feel so inclined.

Business or pleasure?

Making great mixes means getting your hands dirty. That means hearing things that are sometimes unpleasant — room peaks, bass buildup, shrill sibilance, noisy guitar amps, and so on. As a result, the Yamaha HPH-MT7s are not Sweetwater's top recommendation for pleasure listening. But if you're looking to make solid mixes that translate from system to system, they should be high on your list.

super sweet across spectrum!

I tried these out… before buying. They had a rack of cans for comparisons, several different brands at different price levels. I'm a sucker for headphones so when I saw these I had to try them. I own a pair of Avantone Mixphones that I got to mix/edit tracks with. I was startled at the clarity these MT7's put out. Not boosted at 2k, just open sounding. Do they sound like NS-10's?? I'm not sure, I think that is way too subjective to the room the NS-10's are in. What I do know is they are bad to the bone and mix worthy. They require burn-in like anything else worth having, but I'm super happy with these!

Disappointed In the Hardware

I've had these headphones for only just over a year. I'll start off by saying the head phones are great. Sound quality is awesome, super comfortable, light...I really liked them. Then over the course of a few months the signal in the left earphone was degrading, but would come back if I tilted my head. Finally, one day the signal stopped. I took the whole thing apart...cushions off, speakers out, headband connectors...nothing all connections were fine. Then I untucked all the wiring running through the headband down into the headphones etc and finally I saw a section of wiring was worn through at the hinge where headphone bracket goes into the headphone casing. I can't splice it, because the wire gets too short, so basically I need to replace 8" of wiring, which isn't a big deal... I'd have to buy a whole spool of wire for $25 and at this point I've spent too much time on diagnosing and evaluating options that I might as well buy a new set of headphones. Bottom line...I'm disappointed and annoyed that the wiring would give in that location.
