Delight in Guild’s Flagship Dreadnought Acoustic

Players drawn to the sound and feel of iconic vintage American guitars will find everything they want in the Guild D-40 Standard Dreadnought. Preserving the fundamentals of an American-made workhorse is no small undertaking, which is why the D-40 Standard boasts exceptional solid tonewood materials carefully assembled in the United States. Premium cuts of spruce, mahogany, and rosewood produce a dynamic, all-purpose range with low-end warmth upheld by the signature shape of the D-40’s shoulders. The D-40 Standard’s “C”-shaped mahogany neck delivers smooth, assertive playability and supports effortless roaming of the rosewood fingerboard. Moreover, the D-40’s popularity with a diverse spread of acoustic players at Sweetwater demonstrates once again why the dreadnought is a perfect fit for singer/songwriters, band settings, studio recording, and more. Top-notch hardware seals the deal, including a bone nut and a vintage nitro gloss finish that lets tonewoods breathe and honors the Guild legacy with each strum. The D-40 Standard Dreadnought acoustic guitar embodies vintage fidelity and traditional tone every step of the way — discover what the buzz is about!

Outstanding tonewoods

The D-40 Standard takes its cues from a heritage tonewood recipe that facilitates versatile workhorse tones for any style of music. A solid Sitka spruce top supports outstanding volume and projection that, when played softly, mellows into a more delicate dynamic feel. A body carved from solid African mahogany supports powerful spruce with additional warmth, richness, and midrange power for a head-turning tone. Inside the D-40, scalloped Adirondack spruce X-bracing ties everything together with stellar note separation and full-range balance. Additional choice hardware, including a rosewood bridge, bone nut, and vintage tuners, preserves the D-40 Standard's clear sustain and smooth string action, resulting in a high-performance feel that helps players tackle any musical situation with confidence.

American dreadnought design

The D-40 dreadnought body is a classic American design that dates back to Guild guitars first built in 1963. Bluegrass players, fingerpickers, strummers — countless guitarists turn to this body shape for good reason. The D-40’s large width and depth enhance low end and midrange frequencies for reliable, full-bodied sound and projection. The D-40’s power is strong but well-balanced, ideal for single-note runs and strumming with plenty of headroom for dynamics. A mahogany neck paired with a classic “C” shape and a rosewood fingerboard makes for comfortable playability that empowers players regardless of style.

The finishing touch — traditional nitro!

This D-40 Standard manifests vintage charm with a host of tone-boosting hardware and gorgeous appointments. The headstock boasts deluxe high-ratio 20:1 tuners for bold stability and fast tuning breaks. Elsewhere, a bone nut and saddle ensure tight, resonant communication between strings and body with ear-pleasing results. What's more, each D-40 Standard receives a nitrocellulose gloss finish, yielding the sound and feel of a vintage heirloom acoustic. Nitro finishes are rigorous and time-consuming to produce, making them less common; however, discerning players find nitro finishes bring sculpted looks that highlight natural wood grain while letting tonewoods vibrate freely and improve their tonal character as they age. Guild ensures the D-40 Standard Dreadnought acoustic guitar looks, sounds, and feels like a premium instrument at every turn.

D40 Standard Pacific Sunset

After ordering the guitar back in September it finally arrived last week. I already have an all-mahogany D-120 and wanted a brighter-sounding spruce-top dreadnought to accompany it. I've played a few hours on it and while it is much too early for a comprehensive review of the sound, initial impressions are positive. The neck is wonderful, making the guitar a delight to play. The guitar came well set-up and there are no dead spots on any of the frets. The resonance is quite powerful and on the expected bright end(I'm used to the 'warmth' of the D-120) and it projects all notes beautifully. The finish is superb, and the Pacific Sunset Burst comes across in person as more of a 'toasted' coloration- it has more brown with just a hint of reds to it, it's very subtle, but that's just fine. Came with a nice hardshell case with a humidifier in it, definitely a step up from the 'foam core' case the D-120 came in. I am looking forward to the sound mellowing as the wood ages over the coming years and it developing its voice. The one thing I will say surprised me was the weight of the instrument- I cannot believe how light this guitar is. Overall, a well constructed acoustic guitar with signature Guild chime for ages.
