Innovative, discreet choir-miking solution

Earthworks recognized many of the problems with current choir-miking solutions - many are time-consuming to set up (and break down), extremely noticeable onstage, and don't provide enough detail. To resolve these problems, they created the innovative FlexWand 730. It combines a microphone with a boom stand in a single discreet unit, and all the wiring is kept to the floor — so you don't have dangling cables onstage. You can also easily position the FlexWand 730 anywhere between 1.5-feet high and nearly 7-feet high, to meet your varying needs.

Features a high-quality, cardioid condenser microphone

At the heart of the FlexWand 730 is a high-quality condenser microphone with a cardioid pickup pattern. This particular microphone notably offers up exceptional detail while rejecting sounds from the rear. You'll also enjoy a great deal of gain before feedback, an impressive 145dB SPL tolerance, and uniform frequency response from 0, 45, and 90 degrees — just what you need in a choir microphone.

Fantastic Microphone, very sensitive and accurate

I got this microphone not only for the solid build quality that Earthworks is known for but also for it's versatility as well. I use it in my home studio as I'm a piano player and singer who prefers to play and sing at the same time when recording. I knew I'd need to do some soundproofing of sorts because this microphone will pick up any and all background noise such as my fingers hitting the piano keys, or tapping your foot to the beat, etc. However it's not too bad if you do a little soundproofing.
It's always been a challenge setting up a microphone for singing at the same time as playing a piano but the Flexwand 730 gives me that flexibility to position the microphone away from the piano so I'm not obstructed by it yet it's right there for my vocals.

It's a very high quality microphone, very sensitive to the smallest of sounds all the way to thunderous concert grand piano base. Outstanding and versatile.

Fantastic Choir Mics!!!

We use these microphones for both choir and as room mics for our livestream in church. They pick up so much sound and do not cause a whole lot of feedback when used as a pair! In addition, Earthworks is an exceptional company to work with for all of your repair needs. We had a mic suffer damage due to mishandling, and Kim in their service department was so personable and prompt as was able to get us back up and running again. Having to rent lower grade condenser mics in the meantime really showed us how much of a difference these mics make. Would highly recommend purchasing these and we will definitely purchase more earthworks products in the future.

Choir mic

I used the mic for our Easter cantata. The sound quality was immediately better. Like night and day really. Everyone noticed how much of a difference it made. I would recommend this mic to anyone who needs to pull a bigger choir sound out of a smaller choir.

Excellent Microphone

These mics are great for recording a choir. Our church replaced four ceiling mounted choir mics with two of the Earthworks FlexWands and the results have been exceptional. I have had several people comment that the choir sounds clearer, and more blended. The only negative that I have found is that the cable running through the inside of the boom tends to bump the insides of the boom if the mic vibrates. The slight flexing of our wooden platform floor, when someone moves near the mic, causes an audible bass thump in the signal. A high pass filter eliminates the noise but limits the dynamic range of the mic.

Music background: 30 years broadcasting and recording experience

It's OK, very midrange heavy.

A church I volunteer at bought 4 of these. IMO I think they're really overpriced for what they deliver. EQ wise, I have to cut alot of 2kHz, the midrange is very hyped to get them to sound somewhat neutral. The Shure SM81's I use as a staple for choir mic's always gets preferred for use for me, but that means I have to get stands for them and run longer cable, whereas the flexwand is AIO and requires a cable to the base. Another thing is that they're really directional, I don't experience the "wide coverage" that earthworks describes.

One positive note is that they look good on the livestream in that they're slim and practically disappear at the choir area.

Overall, I would not recommend buying if you're looking after neutral sound quality, but I would recommend buying if aesthetics is important.
