A 500 Series Pre with Vintage Tube Character

Looking for vintage tube character in a 500 Series mic preamp? Sweetwater recommends the Fredenstein F609. The warm glow of the F609's VU meter is your first clue to the sonic delights that reside inside. You see, this preamp lets you custom gainstage using its Input and Output Gain controls, for endless tonal variation. The F609 employs two double triodes — an ECC802S and an ECC803S — in a single-wide module. Premium American-made input and output transformers also play a part in this preamp's remarkably fat, smooth, and detailed sound. A 20db pad, polarity reverse, phantom power, a 2-stage highpass filter, and a standby mode complete the feature set. Go ahead — crank the input and dial back the output to drive the '609 into old-school tube distortion. The Fredenstein F609. This is what a rock 'n' roll preamp sounds like.

Everything sounds great through this puppy!

I have to say, WOW! If you're looking for a technical review, there is very little point in it. Technically, it's all documented. Sonically however, not much out there in Youtube land etc. So, I thought I'd pick one up and if the engineers at the studio liked it we'd keep it. Now, they're talking about replacing "the other" tube pres we have in our 500 series racks and replacing them with these guys. I have to say, BLOWN away by this little beast. Very well done Fredenstein! Just beautiful.

Smooth response and excellent headroom

I've had one of these for a few months now, in a Bento 2 chassis, along with the matching compressor. I've had great results using it on vocals. I haven't had the opportunity yet to try it on anything else, but I'm looking forward to it.

This Preamp Has Great Color , Gain And Texture
I Use With Bento 2
I Also Have a Red 1 But Of Course The Two Preamps Are Diffrent. In Many Cases I Use This Preamp For Km 184 And I Get Very Good Results
