Wonderful addition to your GTX-100

I've been enjoying my Mustang GTX-100 for quite a while, but I've never had much of a reason to use the included GTX-7 footswitch or the EXP-1 expression pedal that I picked up to go with it. I'm glad I did, because it's great.

There's some good news if you're on the fence about the EXP-1. First of all, it doesn't keep you from using the GTX-7 footswitch at the same time. It has a jack on each side, and you just daisy chain the GTX-7 off of it with another 1/4" mono cable. (Just keep in mind that it's not actually a wah or volume pedal and doesn't work like one. It's a continuous controller that's meant to work only with compatible Fender digital amps.)

Second, you don't need separate software to set it up with a GTX-100. Make sure your amp has the latest firmware, then use the controls in the amp to do the configuration, including minimum and maximum parameters for the pedal sweep. (It's worth taking the time to dial those in.) It's not too difficult, but it seems like this would be a great utility to include in the Fender Tone mobile app. Aside from that, no complaints here.

Third, it's nicely built and has a cool, unique look that will keep you from mistaking it for one of your other treadles.

Fourth, if you find the pricing of the EXP-1 troubling, keep in mind that a leading competitor in this price range also has expensive accessories, and last I checked they don't include the expression pedal OR the footswitch with the amp — not even the 100W versions. Personally, I want these companies to make a lot of money on things like optional accessories so that they can fund the R&D to make subsequent generations of the products even better. Sure, some companies will just slap together a functional expression pedal that's all plastic and push it out the door at a lower price, but life's too short.

Simple rugged pedal

This is used with the Mustang GTX100. I works flawlessly as a volume pedal or for what every effect you program to the expression mode (Wha, Delay, Pitch detuning). Rugged and simple to use plug in to you amp and pedal board then select it in the set up menu. Way you go.

Fender EXP-1 Mustang Expression Pedal

I was in need of a volume pedal to use with my Fender Mustang GTX50 amp. I owned a passive volume pedal that I tried, first in series between the guitar and the amp, then in the effects loop. Neither was satisfactory. While the pedal had an adjustable setting for minimum volume with the pedal not depressed, it was dependent on which amp and effects were being used. So where a fully depressed pedal might result in a 50% reduction in volume, the same pedal setting might result in almost no volume reduction for a different set of modeled conditions. Since the EXP-1 pedal plugs into Mustang amp in the footswitch jack, it is obviously in a different part of the signal path. And it works! Regardless of which modeled amp or sets of effects are chosen, the minimum user-adjustable setting will yield the same results when the pedal is depressed. This does not mean that you have to give up the footswitch. The footswitch and pedal are simply daisy-chained together. Note that the jack on the bottom of the pedal for connecting to the footswitch is labeled for the MS-4 footswitch, but it also works for the newer 7-button footswitch, which is what I have.

I have not tried the pedal in the expression mode, but I would expect it to work well.
