The Classic Semi-hollowbody Electric

The Gibson ES-335 is the quintessential Gibson ES (Electric Spanish) guitar. The first “thinline” archtop of its kind, the historic ES-335 is considered the standard for semi-hollowbody guitars to this day. With impeccable sounds across its wide-ranging tonal palette, the ES-335 can be found in the hands of jazz, blues, and rock players all over the globe. For 2020, Gibson brings the ES-335 to you with all the same exquisite craftsmanship and detailed appointments that made the original a smash hit when it was introduced in 1958. And as a central feature, it features a satisfyingly rounded C neck profile that harkens back to Gibson’s vaunted instruments of the late 1950s.

One of a kind

From its first appearance in 1958, the Gibson ES-335 set an unmatched standard for playability, and today’s ’335 carries on the tradition. The pearloid-inlaid rosewood fingerboard hand-rolled on a rounded "C" mahogany neck feels incredible and invites hours of playing every time you pick up the instrument. Gibson’s Calibrated T-Type humbucking pickups are paired with the company’s handwired control assembly. The result is the immensely versatile Gibson ES tone that guitarists have craved for over six decades. Precise intonation and tuning stability are provided by Vintage Deluxe tuners with Keystone buttons, paired with a lightweight aluminum ABR-1 bridge and Stopbar tailpiece, anchored by steel thumbwheels and tailpiece studs.

Quality tonewoods, superb electronics

This ’335 also features a 3-ply maple/poplar/maple top and back, while a solid maple center block and a premium mahogany neck make up the rest of the quality tonewoods used in this superb guitar. The center block — a new concept when it was first seen in '58, gives you the warm tonal characteristics of an archtop jazz guitar along with the sustain and feedback-resistance of a solidbody when playing at higher volumes. For blazing amplified sound, the ES-335 comes with T-Type humbucking pickups and custom tone circuitry, giving you a massive range of stylistic options for performance.

Legendary tone from T-Type humbuckers

Tonal excellence is yours when you plug the Gibson ES-335 into your favorite tube amplifier. Loaded with a pair of calibrated T-Type humbucking pickups, each with its own volume and tone controls, you’ll be able to dial in chiming country tones as easily as savagely distorted rock tones. The neck pickup gives you classic hollowbody-style tones for everything from jazz to dirty blues. Flip to the bridge position, and you’ll command sounds covering everything from bright and clean to raw and mean. The guitar gurus here at Sweetwater all concur: playing this guitar is a sublime experience.

Plek’d frets for optimized playability

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the ES-335. You’ll be delighted at how this guitar’s rounded "C" neck profile comfortably fills your hand in just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and bound with rolled edges so no fret ends impede your dexterity. The frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’re likely to own.

Why Buy Your Guitar from Sweetwater?

See how Sweetwater goes to great lengths to give you the very best online guitar buying experience. From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Incredible all around

This is one incredible guitar that you will not regret owning. It is excellently crafted, plays like a dream, and sounds incredible.
I have been fortunate enough to own and have owned other Gibson guitars in my time, and this one is by far my favorite. It is definitely something that I will be holding onto for the rest of my life.
The pickups blend effortlessly into so many different genres of music, and have taken well to a variety of pedals. It really allows you to use this guitar for so many different styles.
The service from Sweetwater, and from my guy Austin are second to none. The guitar came set up as expected and was ready to play after a quick tuning right out of the case. And as always, Austin followed up with me shortly after to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase. Which I most definitely am!

Outstanding guitar, outanding service !

After being burned several times in on-line purchases from another large musical supply store (You know who you are, GC) I risked taking one more chance with Sweetwater on this beautiful Ebony Gibson ES-335 and boy ... am I glad I did!

After an around the world trip delivery that was on Fedex, not Sweetwater, my new guitar arrived well-packed and in one piece. The set=up out of the box was great, and the sound was what I've been looking for ... for decades. This was a lifetime dream purchase for me.

My only criticisms are small: First, Gibson -- for the price we pay you could invest in better strings to ship with. Whatever was on there were scratchy, noisy, and filthy -- which brings me to point two: I played my new baby for an hour after unpacking and my fingers were tattooed with black soot from the strings/fingerboard. I believe a cross between cheap strings and pleking soot that didn't get fully removed from the board. A new set of D'addario 10s and a board hydration treatment took care of this issue. Finally, the input jack was slightly loose, probably because Fedex bounced it over 3/4 of the midwest unnecessarily.

But, David, my service rep, and the rest of the Sweetwater crew are fantastic -- calling me before my guitar arrived to thank me for shopping at Sweetwater and assure me that everything would be Okay -- texting with me even after the guitar arrived -- available to me as a customer and doing everything they say they'll do with their 55 point check. I'm now a Sweetwater customer for life. Thank you, Team!

If you've had experiences like I've had with that other Musical Instrument Company, and you're feeling a little gun-shy about making your first big purchase with Sweetwater, fear not. These folks are professionals and will treat you well and right.

The Real Deal

I finally graduated from Epiphone Les Pauls and semi-hollowbodies and now own a beautiful Gibson ES-335 in Vintage Ebony. The differences between the Epiphones and this Gibson are quite significant. There are probably three primary differences, including 1) the Gibson pickups are far superior to the humbuckers on Epiphone models; 2) Gibson's craftsmanship is unparalleled—from the fret nibs to the binding to the hand-filed nut, the details really stand out; and 3) the 335's nitrocellulose finish is stunning and will only get better with time. At first, the neck was a little chunkier than I'm used to, but I've since adjusted and count the 335 as my most playable guitar.

Amazingly Versatile

This guitar can play anything and sounds terrific. I mostly play Fender solid body guitars, but this is a nice addition the group. This single guitar covers a lot of ground. Love it.

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
