Capture the Classic Flatwound Bass Sound

Capture that classic flatwound bass sound with D'Addario ECB81-5 Chrome Bass strings. Flatwound strings have long been the go-to strings for jazz, R&B, and pop bass players — that distinct warm, mellow tone and deep low end can't be captured by roundwound strings. Plus, the smooth polished feel of the flattened stainless steel ribbon wire is extremely comfortable. Take it from Sweetwater's discerning bass players: D'Addario ECB81-5 Chrome Bass strings provide the low end and flatwound vibe you're looking for.

D'Addario: making quality strings for over 300 years

Behind every set of D'Addario strings are over three centuries of fine craftsmanship. The D'Addario family tradition began in the tiny town of Salle, Italy, in 1680 where they made assorted instrument strings for over 200 years before relocating to New York in 1905. As the modern string making industry began to develop, the D'Addario family emerged as innovators by designing the winding machine most string makers still use today. And while their techniques have been modernized, the pride that goes into each set of strings dates back to the D'Addario family's earliest roots.

Bass Strings

Really like these strings. Was looking for a deep mellow sound and Isaiah recommended these strings. They have the sound that I was looking for. Never had used flat wound on my bass but they play great. Thanks Isaiah!

My new favorites

As a bassist for over 50 years, I've had the opportunity to play many different strings. For so many years I've avoided flatwound strings thinking they just weren't cool, and they didn't have that bright sound. A few years back I decided it was time to revisit the flatwounds, I tried the Ernie Ball cobalt flats and really liked them, but I was having an issue with string breakage. I kept reading reviews about the D'Addario Chromes and decided to try them. I'm so glad I did! What a game changer for my playing! They do have a brighter yet warm sound, the tone and volume is consistent across the neck. I love being able to move and slide up and down the neck with ease and no finger noise. I can't believe how well the sound sits within a mix in my studio, and cuts through stage mix. When needed, they even sound good slapped. I now have them on five of my seven basses.
Take a walk on the wild side and try them!

Good Strings

Not much to say about them, they're strings. They sound pretty good and are fun to use.

Not suitable for Fender 5-string P-bass

I thought I'd try these strings for flatwounds on my Fender 5-string American Professional II P-Bass. Unfortunately, though the gauge of the string looks good according to specs, the b string on a thru-body string won't fit. The problem is the silk winding at the ball end. It's just way too big to fit through the hole in the bridge. There's no way I'm drilling a bigger hole in the bridge as I don't want to compromise the weight of the bridge. It seems crazy that D'Addario couldn't figure this out since a Fender 5-string P-bass is a pretty typical instrument.
