Marshall's Famous DriveMaster Pedal Returns

Marshall's The Guv'nor distortion pedal was a resounding success in the late 1980s, attaining industry-wide acclaim for its authentic British-voiced amp-in-a-box sound. By 1992, the dust had settled, and Marshall was ready to kick things up a notch. Enter the DriveMaster, a JCM800-style pedal similar to its predecessor but with a new tone and drive network for greater performance. Unfortunately, the original stompboxes have long been difficult — and expensive — to obtain on the used market. Well, that will no longer be a problem, as Marshall is reissuing this revered pedal to honor the company's 60th anniversary. The rebooted pedal offers a direct, one-to-one copy of the original, right down to the iconic graphics, unique enclosure design, and distinctive red-on-black color scheme. The DriveMaster boasts a familiar control set, with a flexible 3-band EQ, plus Gain and Volume knobs, for dialing in your sound. You also get a standard footswitch and a red LED status indicator. There are countless reasons why the '90s-era DriveMaster is so heavily sought after today, and this reissue takes everything that made the original so special and re-creates it for today's guitarist.

The return of a coveted '90s legend

The DriveMaster reissue isn't just inspired by the original pedal, it's an exact copy of the original pedal. It includes the original's red-on-black color scheme, the iconic "Marshall" script, and the distinctively shaped enclosure. If you missed out on the DriveMaster the first time around, stop living in regret. Get your hands on this brand-spanking-new reissue, and revel in authentic cranked-British-stack guitar tones. From subtle to stun gun, the DriveMaster will infuse your pedalboard with the sonic range of a top studio pro.

A cranked Marshall stack to drive your pedalboard

Marshall's The Guv'nor was a game changer at the time of its late '80s release, and the original DriveMaster aimed to take its British-style crunch to even greater heights. But does the reissue deliver the goods? Well, the guitarists here at Sweetwater certainly believe so. Once we plugged into the DriveMaster, we couldn't get enough. It simply oozes with the dimed-JCM800 tones that haunt every Marshall aficionado's dreams. And, thanks to its 3-band EQ and Gain and Volume knobs, you'll find that dialing in your idealized hard rock crunch is a breeze.

Marshall DriveMaster Overdrive/Distortion Pedal Features:

  • A faithful re-creation of Marshall's '90s-era amp-in-a-box distortion pedal
  • Replicates the growling, snarling bite of a cranked Marshall JCM800 amplifier
  • Includes the original pedal's iconic graphics, unique enclosure design, and distinctive red-on-black color scheme
  • Flexible 3-band EQ, plus Gain and Volume knobs, for dialing in your sound
  • Standard footswitch with an easy-to-see red LED status indicator
  • Operates on either a 9V battery or 9V DC power

The Master of Drive

Utterly fantastic JCM800 in a box. Extremely versatile. And when you hit it up front with a Boss Sd1, it is Marshall nirvana...the heaven, not the band. My only gripe is that the volume/level pot should have been made to be louder.

Great pedal

I wanted one of these so bad when they originally sold in the 90's but could afford one at the time. I jusy has to get one as soon as they were rereleased. This is a great sounding pedal. I usually use it to boost an already driven Marshall like my jcm800 silver jubilee or DSL.

Sweet…

Killer pedal, has that sweet Marshall tone we all know and love. On its own or pushed by another drive, it sounds great. Useful three band eq as well to dial in multiple sounds. So glad they reissued these. Sweet!!!

Just….YES

I have wanted a Guv'nor for a long time and was very excited about these reissues from Marshall. I found out that the Guv and the DriveMaster are basically the exact same pedal, so when I found it quite frustrating that the Guv is pretty hard to obtain (constantly backordered), I went with the DM. Glad I did. It's a phenomenal pedal. It's got that Marshall 800 sound I've been looking for. You can't go wrong with this one.

Like having another Marshall amp!

I have a Marshall silver jubilee amp and 2x12 cab , and 2 Gibson SG guitars ,I thought that's all I need in life and it has been ,but I saw that Marshall reissued the original AMP in a box pedal and I thought I had to try one ,may ask why when I already have a Marshall amp but the silver jubilee has its own sound which is great but I wanted the older Marshall sound I guess more vintage type sound so I got the pedal ,placed it in front of my clean channel of my amp set it up and push the button…WOW was I blown away …it's like I have 2 Marshall amps now it's that good and it will do vintage Marshall all the way to jcm 800 and then some ,step on a overdrive in front of it and next level . I have had dozens of Marshall in a box type pedals all the big name ones you have heard of and then some ,this is by far the best pedal for Marshall in a box I have ever played and guess what it's made by Marshall guess that makes sense also made in England, unbelievable thanks to my sales guy CRAIG MILLS ext 3274 for all his help to make this happen.

There are countless "British"-style guitar amplifiers out there, but take it from the lifelong guitarists and tone connoisseurs at Sweetwater, when it comes to Marshall tone, there's nothing like the real thing. We've played them all, from vintage JTM45s and the ultra-cool Plexi reissue to modern handmade masterpieces such as the JVM410. There isn't a model among them we can't recommend with total confidence, and that includes their more affordable models too, like MG, DSL, and Code series amps. Thanks to our tight relationship with Marshall, Sweetwater's always on the cutting edge of their latest designs, custom models, and limited-edition gems. If you want iconic tone from across the pond, you want Marshall, and your Sweetwater Sales Engineer will help you find the perfect one.
