Billy Sheehan-designed P-style Bass Pickups

Designed in conjunction with bass guitar legend Billy Sheehan, the DiMarzio Relentless P set takes the classic P-style pickup to a whole new level. For starters, the shape of these pickups eliminates sharp edges for playing comfort that's nothing short of otherworldly. What's more, the design of these pickups places them extra close to your strings for enhanced dynamics. You also get the same expanded magnetic field as DiMarzio's Model P, giving you a hyper-wide frequency response for extra body and a fat, punchy tone. As for sound, Relentless P pickups boast a passive hum-canceling 2-piece design with 50% more output than typical passive pickups and near-zero electromagnetic interference. To top it off, the bassists here at Sweetwater appreciate that Relentless P pickups are fully potted with metal covers and foil-shielded hookup wires for squeal-free, low-noise operation. Searching for an ultra-high-performance P-style set? The DiMarzio Relentless P set is guaranteed to surpass all your expectations.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Great pickup upgrade

Dropped these pu's in my Fender American Professional II bass. Stock pickups were great. These are awesome!! More output, cleaner, awesome. Really dig the adjustable pole pieces. Easy installation, no hum/buzz when you touch the pole pieces.

Great upgrade to ANY bass.
Music background: Pro bassist, been playing since 1986.

Extremely happy

These pick-ups have amazing sound

Not 50% more

So the biggest reason I got this pickup was that it said it had 50% more output than traditional passive pickups. I did a test with a decibel meter against my other basses using the same amp and same potentiometers in each guitar. They're a pain to install first and foremost. You need to know how to solder. They're essentially two separate pickups that you wire in series and the instructions look like they came from IKEA. No words just pictures so if you even think this might be difficult, don't try it. Plan to have a pro install. I'm not a pro so that's why it was a pain. You also need to use a 500k volume which is not standard for most passive basses. I digress. I hooked them up to a $ pot which should brighten and increase attack and tiny amount of volume. I have 750k pots in all three basses. I measured the decibel level for each of my basses. Again, same amp and amp settings, same mic position and same bass line. First was my Squier classic vibe 70's bass with stock pickups wired to 750k which resulted in an average volume of 77.3db and max 86.3. Next was my fender jazz bass. This one is a p/j where the p and j pickups are wired in series to a single 750k volume knob. The pickups are a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter pounders. This produced an average of 79.5db and a max of 85.7. Then my p bass with the Dimarzio Relentless P on a 750k. This produced an average of 69.8db and max of 76.7. I ran the test twice on two separate days and the results were the same. For a pickup that says 50% more output to come in at an average of 7.5db quieter than a stock Squier p/u is embarrassing. The difference in the max rating was worse with a 9.6db difference. Look, I like the sound a lot. The pickup sounds dark mean and has a really nice even response. BUT, it does not produce 50% more output than my stock Squier nor the SD 1/4lb. Use this info however you will. If the volume wasn't a thing, it sounds the best of the three. Close second for the QP so, for my money and for ease of install, I'd go with the QP. Oh and, all three basses are set up the same with the same relative string hight and same strings. Hope this helps if you're trying to decide on a pickup.
