A Legendary OD Gets Even More Legendary

The Overdrive Preamp 250 is a reissue of DOD’s legendary yellow, 1980s-era dirt box. This pedal delivers the same sonic signature as its predecessor but ups the ante with more output, a bright blue status LED, a modern 9-volt DC power supply input, true-bypass switching, and a lighter aluminum housing. The 250 boasts a straightforward 2-knob control layout, with Gain and Level knobs, enabling you to produce both subtle clipping and full-on distortion, as well as all the points between. You can use this stompbox as a standalone effect, or you can use it to front load a British-voiced high-gain amp for instant Yngwie Malmsteen–style lead tones. Decked out in an eye-catching yellow metallic flake finish, the DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 is back in all its screeching, roaring glory.

Even better than the original

The Overdrive Preamp 250 reissue not only captures the classic tone and wild character of the original pedal, but it also delivers gobs of extra output, making it more suitable for contemporary playing styles than its vintage counterpart. A crisp blue LED indicator lets you know whether the pedal is active, and a modern 9-volt DC input provides easy integration with your pedalboard’s power supply. You also get true-bypass switching to preserve your direct tone when the unit isn’t in use. A lightweight aluminum chassis and a sleek yellow metallic flake finish round out the Overdrive Preamp 250’s features.

Delivers subtle sweetness or all-out grind

You can coax many different tones from the DOD Overdrive Preamp 250’s two control knobs. This stompbox’s Gain knob controls the amount of distortion, from a little bit of dirt to absolute saturation. Level ranges from subtle body for “always on” performance to a substantial boost that helps your solos cut through a hard-rocking band. The guitarists here at Sweetwater have found the 250 to be ideal for players who like to clean up their tone and just clip the top of their signal. Additionally, with the Gain all the way down and the Level all the way up, you can use this pedal’s abundant output to really punish the front end of your amp.

DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 Features:

  • A reimagining of the ’80s-era DOD Overdrive Preamp 250
  • Delivers the same sonic signature as the original stompbox but with more output
  • Gain knob dials in everything from a little bit of dirt to absolute saturation
  • Level ranges from subtle “always on” sweetening to a substantial solo boost

  • Use it to front load a British-voiced high-gain amp for instant Yngwie Malmsteen–style lead tones

  • Modern 9-volt DC input provides easy integration with your pedalboard’s power supply
  • True-bypass switching preserves your direct tone when the unit isn’t in use

Wonderful overdrive for a slightly dirty amp

I couldn't tell you how close this reissue, with its gorgeous gold-sparkle paint job, sounds to the original grey-box 250 that some collectors seem to love. I can tell you that it sounds wonderful with a slightly overdriven tube amp like a Marshall. Add a Strat with some noiseless singlecoils, and it will do a great Yngwie tone with loads of harmonic complexity and a nice smooth texture with some bite to the attack and a lovely singing sustain. While I'm not a vintage pedal collector, this is one of my favorite pedals out of the two hundred or so that I own. The lightweight aluminum enclosure, the clicky switch, the sparkly gold paint, the simple clean graphic, the blue LED, the industry-standard DC input jack — it's an unqualified home run for DOD from my perspective.

Very nice pedal

Great character and nice tube amp type feel. Sounds great in-front of a variety of small tube amps. Can be used as a boost, add some grit to an already crunchy tone, full on overdrive. Roll the tone back on your guitar with the gain cranked and it starts to sound a little like fuzz.

Nice amount of dynmics but still kind of smooth.

Doesn't really change the EQ of your tone a whole lot.

Long Overdue Return of the Original 250!

Bought mine from Sweetwater. It was my first time buying something from them and the service was awesome!

To the pedal: They hit a home run with this new version. There have been various reissue versions and the YJM308, but none of them really hit the target of the old late-70s grey version. This one seems to be very close. Apparently it uses a 741 op amp, like the gray version.

It sounds great! Picture a post-1982 DOD 250 or 308 with less noise, more tubey character, a nice growl and a much better EQ. It has more bottom end and less of the thin top end. It is actually a pretty transparent pedal.

As a bonus, they also added an LED indicator light and true bypass.

The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because there is a pretty good pop sound when hitting the switch if the gain is set high. However, it's not a big deal if the gain isn't cranked. A noise suppression like an NS-2 kills the pop too. This is a very minor gripe.

The pedal works very well with my Fender Malmsteen Strat, as well as my Strat Plus with a Chopper mini-humbucker in the bridge and my Gibson Les Paul Axcess.

This new version is just coming out to the stores, so there wasn't a lot of info to base my purchase. I'm glad I took the chance! It's a keeper.
