Control LED Lights without DMX

If you need control over dimmable lighting fixtures that aren't equipped with DMX, then you're in luck. The Chauvet DJ DMX-4 dimmer/relay pack gives you four channels of dimming or switching, with up to five amps per channel (15A max). Unlike some dimmer/switch packs the DMX-4 will provide a phantom load that prevents ghosting and flickering in LED fixtures, adding flexibility to your rig while ensuring your light show will look great. And 16 built-in configurable chases make it easy to get a light show up and running really fast. Four duplex outlets allow you to control up to eight fixtures, and you can assign a separate DMX address to each duplex. When you need control over lighting instruments that aren't equipped with DMX, Sweetwater can confidently recommend the Chauvet DMX-4 dimmer/relay pack.

Chauvet DJ DMX-4 Dimmer/Switch Pack Features at a Glance:
  • 4-channel dimmer/switch pack with up to 5 amps per channel (15A max)
  • Provides DMX control for on/off or dimming fixtures that aren't equipped with DMX inputs
  • Generates a phantom load to prevent ghosting and flickering in LED fixtures
  • 16 built-in, configurable chases to get a light show running fast

Works With Off-The-Shelf LED Spots

Bought this item based on the LED features Chauvet recently updated it with. We were provided par cans converted to use LED spots from the hardware store. The unit works great, dims the spots with no flashing, and dims to off. LEDs run cool and provide a much truer white than RGB pars. Very pleased.

Works great

It does just what it’s supposed to do! This unit is nice because you can program it so each set of two electric sockets can act as simple on/off receptacles or as typical dimmer functions. Channel 1 can be set as a dimmer function allowing variable light from your fixture ( think old school incandescent bulb fixture) Channel 2 can be a simple on/ off for a fixture that does not require dimming. It’s so easy to program as well. I’m very happy with this purchase!

Chauvet Dimmer / Switch Pack

When it was delivered, I felt that the mount at the top was a waste of space for someone who is mobile. But I soon found out how nice it is to slide it right on the truss or stand. Set it up to chase 8 pin spots. This was the first time that people took pictures of my lighting setup as photos for the high school dance.

Works Exactly As Described IF...............................

You don't have other fixtures running in master/slave mode in the chain. I noticed it was losing DMX signal frequently when controlling it from Show Express. That is a BAD thing with this box, because once it loses DMX signal, it just stays at the setting it was at when DMX signal was lost or interrupted and will not respond or do anything else. That means that if you only had two channels turned on when the signal was interrupted, that's all you will have (and they will stay on) until you power the unit off and then back on again. Not so easy when this guy is mounted in the center of a 25-foot length of truss that is ten feet in the air. It took some troubleshooting to figure out that what was causing the signal interruption was my two Chauvet DJ Intimidator Spot 375Zs that were daisy-chained together, but also running in master/slave mode. My DMX chain was this: Chauvet DiFi Hub connected to the first 375Z, on to the next 375Z, and then into this DMX-4 box. The problem was that the two 375Zs were sending signal back and forth at the same time I was trying to send signal to the DMX-4 from Show Express, and this caused the DMX-4 to drop signal. Once I removed the 375Zs from the chain and went straight from the DiFi Hub into the DMX-4, all was good! And yes, I was certainly using high-quality DMX cable (not plain old mic cable).
I knocked a star off for this finickiness, as I would have been dead at a show had I not experimented at home with it before taking it out. I knocked another half-star off because of the size of the unit--it is pretty big and does not hide itself neatly when hanging on the truss. I would like to see this box shrink down to the size of the American DJ Airstream WiFi Pack to be workable. The reason I don't use one of those (the ADJ product) is because they are complete pieces of garbage and unreliable. Constantly tripping its own circuit breaker on very light loads, and I can't have that kind of unreliability. I put this Chauvet product under full load and it never tripped once after I got the DMX trickiness figured out, and the box is built like a tank. Bottom line is that if you need remote switching controlled by Show Express or other DMX software, this box will do the trick. Just make sure there are no master/slave pairs in the chain of DMX cables.

Sweetwater lighting techs, DJs, and musicians alike have the deepest respect for Chauvet, both on the personal and on the professional side. Many of us first became acquainted with Chauvet before LED technology caught on, and it's been impressive to see their range of fixtures grow. Today, Chauvet offers some of our most popular LED lights, from drop-in PAR replacements and intelligent lighting instruments to exciting effects, foggers, haze machines, and more. We also love their innovation. Chauvet has brought LED technology to classic fixtures like ellipsoidal and Fresnels, while their D-Fi system has made wireless DMX truly accessible. Top it off with powerful hardware controllers, next-gen DMX control software, and much more, and we're happy to recommend the Chauvet gear we not only stock but also use ourselves.
