Perfect Affordable Mixer for Analog Summing

Does it have the Midas Sound? We think it does, or at least a version of that sound which is totally useful for our needs for analog summing out of Cubase. I already have a Midas DM16 and will use this as a sidecar mixer for additional buss processing through a separate signal path. We send sixteen analog outputs from a RME DigiFace USB interface connected by ADAT through a FerroFish Pulse 16 converter. We compared this to a number of other inexpensive analog mixers, which all sound clear and clean, but none of them sounded good when we drove them into clipping. But the Midas DM sounds great and loves the liberal application of the red clipping LED on every channel and on the master buss. It's also dead quiet, which means you have the headroom for serious mixes. The whole point of analog summing is to get analog saturation and color, without expensive plugins, aliasing, huge CPU usage, or digital harshness. The analog mixes we make in these DM mixers simply blow away the ITB mixes within Cubase. With this mixer, we get real faders and decent EQ. The EQ is limited but quite responsive. The entire process puts the fun – and the old-style extra work- back into DAW recording. I would definitely NOT give this mixer a five-star rating for live sound. In fact, I wouldn't even consider using it for live sound. It just doesn't have the key features you need for live sound. There's no high-pass filter, which is an absolute MUST. And there are no indicator lights for PFL or MUTE functions, so you can easily get lost. But the lack of features and the clean, uncluttered layout are EXACTLY why we like it for analog summing OTB. It doesn't duplicate the features we already have in the DAW. It does summing, panning, basic EQ, some pleasant analog saturation, and monitoring, all at a fraction of the cost of off-the-shelf summing mixers. For this purpose, we're giving it a five-star rating. There's nothing else out there like it.

Drum sub mixer

Tomir suggested this for a sub mix of our drum kit to go along with the mr18 I already had. Setting up a mix was easy, added phantom power and some EQ and was able to condense the kit down to free up channels. Overall great for the price.

M12 Mixer

Midas DM12 mixer First time out with band sounded great, vocals clear, acoustic guitar sounds great plugged straight in with no processor.

I would recommend it to any one.

I AM SOLD!

I looked at the Allen and Heath, Soundcraft, and this mixer. I did some research and decided on the Midas dm12. The Midas is eerily silent with lots of room to play with the volume. The sound is clean and full! The unit is solid. I look forward to using this to its full potential.
