An Exploder of a Screaming Fuzz/Wah Pedal

From his speed-metal technicality to his expressive and emotive solo work, Akira Takasaki of Loudness has reigned as one of Japan’s premier shredders since the early ’80s. The Dunlop Akira Takasaki Signature Cry Baby Fuzz Wah pedal harness his 40-plus years of performing and recording experiences to craft, in Akira’s words, the “best rock wah pedal for live performances, simultaneously combining classic Cry Baby wah-wah with all-out fuzzy aggression. Moreover, this pedal sports a side-mounted low-frequency sweep to shape your sound to your liking, and there’s also a switch to engage/disengage the fuzz from the circuit. When testing out the Akira Takasaki Signature Cry Baby Fuzz Wah at Sweetwater, one of our favorite features proved to be auto-return switching, a function that allows you to effortlessly swap between your dry and affected tone in the midst of a performance. A must-have pedal for Loudness lovers and fuzz/wah fans alike, the Dunlop Akira Takasaki Signature Cry Baby Fuzz Wah pedal is sure to transform even the mildest performance into the wildest of “Crazy Nights”!

Dunlop Akira Takasaki Signature Cry Baby Fuzz Wah Effects Pedal Features:

  • Signature fuzz/wah pedal of legendary Japanese guitarist Akira Takasaki of Loudness
  • Wah circuit based on the classic Cry Baby formula delivers a rich, expressive sound
  • Raw and aggressive fuzz tone, which can be engaged/disengaged via a convenient side switch
  • Auto-return switching makes it a breeze to make a passage pop quickly, then promptly disengage
  • Handy LEDs to tell you the current status of both the fuzz and the wah

Love and Hate

This Wah delivers a gorgeous compression. Compared to the original Cry Baby and the Bronze JC95 Jerry Cantrell Signature Cry Baby Wah, the Akira Takasaki Signature Cry Baby Fuzz Wah Pedal goes beyond both and fails worse than each. The Akira eliminates (like the Jerry) the shrill end of the original Cry Baby PLUS it delivers smoother and clearer wah melodics than the other Dulop models. This is what attracted me to the pedal, along with the innovative fuzz button and Sweetwater's praise of the "auto-return switching, a function that allows you to effortlessly swap between your dry and affected tone in the midst of a performance. A must-have pedal for Loudness lovers and fuzz/wah fans alike..."The fuzz/wah effects are indeed lovely, but the auto-return switching does NOT allow you to return to your original sound. This will NOT be (in Akira's words) the "best rock pedal for live performances" if you play classic rock, psych-rock, blues, or anything other than heavy distortion because your standard, accustomed sound will warble and distort even when your foot is not on the pedal. There is a subtle hitch in the wiring that allows some Wah compression to bleed into your "dry" performance tones. This makes me believe there is something absolutely essential in being able to click the button with your foot when you want to engage and disengage the Wah. The notion of transitioning effortlessly (without a metal click of the toe button) between wah effects and your primary sound is alluring, but it doesn't actually happen here as promised. There is a faint but continual "wah wah" underwater sound that persists through the "unaffected" guitar tones, making it an IMPOSSIBLE wah pedal to employ in a live performance, unless you play strictly in the vein of "Loudness". I love all things Osaka, but this one has a major oversight by both its creators and distributors. The advertising should alert players outside the genre of Metal that incorporating this pedal into the performance rig will introduce wah distortions to the "clean" sound. If Dunlop could revise this pedal: please keep everything that's phenomenal about the tones, fuzz, and compression...but please incorporate the original Wah punch button beneath the toe to relieve the "clean" moments of performance from under "wahwah" corruption.
