A Scaled-down Strymon with Studio-grade Reverberation

Strymon’s Cloudburst Ambient Reverb Pedal represents a bold new step for one of the stompbox world’s most renowned brands, packing their industry-defining echo algorithms into a significantly smaller form factor with a drastically streamlined workflow. The Strymon Cloudburst boasts an exceptionally accessible knob-per-function layout, including a single Decay knob that unlocks a vast sweep of different echo options, from a slight room reflection to an all-out wash of ambient reverberation. Moreover, a cutting-edge Ensemble control integrates dynamic synthetic string-style harmonics into your signal, while the Mod control is a must-have for creating movement and texture in your signature soundscapes. Of course, this pedal’s slimmed-down box makes no compromises on Strymon’s studio-quality formula — the Cloudburst sports full MIDI functionality, USB-C, 300 presets, stereo I/O, and a host of other top-end features found on its larger siblings. Strymon never fails to impress; fittingly, the Cloudburst’s seamless blend of studio-grade sound, near-limitless sonic options, and traditional stompbox workflow prove the sky’s the limit for this single-algorithm reverb pedal.

Pedalboard-friendly enclosure

While the Cloudburst may clock in at a significantly smaller size than your typical Strymon box, don’t be fooled: this pedal boasts the same world-class build and industry-defining tone as any of its full-size V2 siblings. A discrete JFET analog front end, stereo input/output, and full MIDI functionality allow the Cloudburst to hang with any top-end reverb pedal on the market. Next, an electromechanical relay-switched true bypass operation delivers a 100% uncolored signal when the pedal is not in use; you can also swap the Cloudburst to buffered bypass mode to beef up a long signal chain. You can also access full MIDI and USB functionality for remote control via your DAW or controller, with 300 MIDI preset locations available to save your favorite settings.

One algorithm — endless ambient reverb possibilities

The Cloudburst takes a wildly different approach to pedal design compared to Strymon’s previous echo offerings, and the key to the formula is the massive sonic sweep of this pedal’s Decay control. A standard function on almost every reverb pedal, the Cloudburst’s Decay knob is anything but typical — instead of packing the Cloudburst with a variety of switchable settings, this pedal’s single-algorithm Decay knob is fine-tuned to sweep through the entire spectrum of reverb types. From a slight room reflection on the lowest setting to an ethereal wash of cathedral-style reverberation and beyond, the Cloudburst’s Decay knob delivers an uncompromising array of sonic possibilities with Strymon’s most intuitive pedal workflow yet.

Dynamic synthetic string ensembles

An atmospheric Ensemble control sets the Cloudburst apart from any other Strymon reverb and — quite frankly — any reverb pedal on the market today, with an exceptionally dynamic, artifact-free harmonic-generating effect reminiscent of an angelic synthesized string section. Ensemble continuously analyzes 48 different frequency bands in your guitar’s signal, then generates upper harmonic partials relative to each frequency as you play. A switch allows for two distinct levels of Ensemble, from the subtle character enhancement of the mezzo piano setting to the cascading string-style orchestration of forte.

Modulation for texture and movement

In addition to the Cloudburst’s Ensemble effect, the pedal boasts a robust modulation control to impart a touch of movement and lushness to your tone. The Mod control is a dual-function modulation knob that impacts the effect’s depth on the first half of the sweep while the second half increases the speed. Sweetwater guitarists find that the Cloudburst’s modulation perfectly pairs with the pedal’s Ensemble control, especially on higher settings where the combination results in an ’80s-style synthesizer sci-fi sway.

Perfect companion w/my HX Stomp XL utilizing MIDI

I bought this 6 months ago, running it through the FX loop on my HX Stomp XL board. I used it for select ambient sounds I couldn't produce on the Stomp and/or to free up DSP. I was very pleased with this pedal but didn't use it much until… I discovered its MIDI functionality. Now the pedal is truly integrated with my HX Stomp XL with maximum potential, going from a 1 trick pony to an almost always used pedal. This allows me to outboard my reverb (heavy DSP), giving me more options on the Stomp for multi-amps, etc. I am working with about dozen presets that go from light room-ish reverb to full pad sounds. This pedal produces some truly unique and amazing sounds. If you buy this and have MIDI capability, get the TRS MIDI chord and use the preset function! Pretty easy to figure out and a total game-changer. I started out with the MIDI cc controls but found that when switching between presets it would produce unwanted sound artifacts. This is very minimal with changing between presets. At the time I purchased the Cloudburst, I was considering the Big Sky. I am so glad I got the Cloudburst. It is smaller, cheaper and with the MIDI/preset functions meets all my needs.

Congrats Strymon!

Where to start? This box can give you a blanket of pad-like ambient sounds. It will add octave up and down effects, modulation to the effect as well. The tone knob does a lot to the overall effect. The switch has 3 options. Kinda like Off, Light and Heavy modes. It can take your signal to 100 degrees wet too.

All in all, it's Strymon. You know what your getting. Haven't tried the stereo ins and outs. Or midi. But so far, this offering from Strymon is Amazing. A dream mechine. I use mine with the Flint v2 and it covers a lot of ground.

Just buy it! Destin to be a classic.

Inspirational pedal

Truly different than the normal reverb! In a great way!! The Cloudburst quickly earned a spot on my board and it remains my favorite pedal after the honeymoon period. The Cloudburst has sparked creativity and has inspired me to play and create. I highly recommend this pedal. It truly is something special.

Choirs of Angels…Singing Slow Blues Licks

I'm not a very good electric guitar player.

I might as well get that out of the way up front. I'm pretty good on the acoustic guitar, impressing my friends with my James Taylor-style finger picking. But on electric, most of the fretboard beyond the cowboy chords has remained a foreign country to me. I know the note locations and layout like I've memorized the map, but when I would try to actually wander its countryside I'd get scared and lost pretty quickly. When I'd try to play over a blues progression or simply "noodle," the result was intimidation, frustration, and a quick end to my playing and practicing. I was resigned to the fact that I'd never any get better.

Enter the Cloudburst pedal, which I bought online from Sweetwater in the middle of viewing a demo on YouTube, I was so impressed with the sounds I was hearing. In all honesty, I didn't think I'd ever have a real use for it as I don't play in a band or help lead church worship music. But Strymon had somehow managed to pack a huge choir of angels into a small metal box and painted that box such an extraordinary shade of blue, I just had to have it.

In the days since it arrived, I've played more on my electric guitars than ever. From just noodling to trying some solos over a 12-bar blues, every note I play builds and soars like celestial music. Like choirs of angels singing alongside slow blues licks. Poorly played, perhaps. But still…angels.

Little by little I am already getting better, feeling more confident and exploring the full length of the fretboard. And it sounds magnificent. Thanks to Strymon and their beautiful blue box, I am actually enjoying practicing, and I am already seeing improvement.

I have no doubt that 99% of you reading this are far better guitarists than I am, but I'm confident that simply playing through a Cloudburst will expand your musical boundaries and inspire you to stretch your musical vocabulary regardless of your skill level.

And the beautiful blue metal box will look amazing on your pedal board. Plus…angels.
Music background: A guitar hobbyist, I enjoy buying guitars, modding and repairing guitars, and playing guitars at a mediocre level of skill.

Next-Generation Reverb

I just needed a plain 'ol reverb pedal, nothing fancy or expensive, just a simple reverb to add a little depth to my clean-ish finger picking material. If I hadn't discovered the Strymon Cloudburst, there are many pedals that probably could have done this simple job quite well. As luck would have it, this pedal was released just 3 weeks prior to my search, so reviews and Youtube demos are abundant and they are ALL raving about this thing. Now I am too.
My last reverb had shimmer, as many of them do nowadays and I wanted something similar to that. Well, this is NOTHING like shimmer. Even the best shimmer effect can be too shrill and piercing for some applications. The Ensemble effect is lush and full and smooth. There are no unpleasant sounds to be found anywhere in there.
Although the Cloudburst is simple to use, there IS a sort of learning curve as each tiny little tweak of ANY knob changes the effect dramatically. There are thousands of gorgeous soundscapes waiting to be discovered but don't worry, you won't be disappointed with any of them. Any and all settings are just breathtakingly beautiful.
It is also very touch-sensitive. Small changes in picking dynamics produce widely varying textures. There is a sort of 3D AI thing going on that molds the Ensemble effect around your notes, resulting in a lively, dynamic, even personal experience.
One last thing That I feel compelled to mention. If you are familiar with "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin, the Cloudburst absolutely NAILS IT! It was worth the price of admission just for that. But there is so, so much more to be discovered. This might actually be the most versatile pedal on my board.
