Classic Design. Hot-rodded Electronics.

To rock bassists who are looking for a fully loaded P- or J-style at a great price, Sweetwater recommends the Schecter CV-5. For slap 'n' pop funk to growly modern rock, this heavily modded 5-string brings the best of the mod shop — including low-noise humbuckers with versatile 3-way series/split/parallel mini toggles — to an undeniably classic-feeling design. The CV-5's slender satiny "C" maple neck with carbon fiber reinforcement and heavily contoured lightweight ash body are super comfortable to play from a seated or standing position. Choice hardware and appointments include an S-Tek bridge with adjustable steel saddles, a permanently lubricated Tusq XL nut, and a 6-bolt neck attachment for drift-free performance on the road.

Classic design with a twist

Nearly every bassist cuts their teeth on the classic design suggested by the Schecter CV-5. The CV-5 brings the response, feel, speed, and vibe of the timeless California design to a hot-rodded modern instrument that's perfect for today's rockers.

Maple-on-ash construction

Hard maple on lightweight ash has been a recipe for great tone since the 1950s. The Schecter CV-5 updates the classic, with a heavily sculpted ash body that hugs the torso, seated or standing, and a 6-bolt maple neck with a satin backing that feels great in the hand.

Versatile series/split/parallel humbuckers

Decades of rock glory await you in the CV-5's Diamond J-Bucker humbucking pickups and versatile electronics. A master volume, master tone, and 3-way pickup selector make it quick and painless to find great sounds in a flash. But for players who a want a deeper dive, mini toggles for each pickup allow you to split the coils for a more traditional single-coil response, or run pickups in series (rather than parallel) for a heavier hit and beefier output.

Schecter CV-5 5-string Bass Guitar Features:

  • A rock-voiced alternative to the California classic
  • Brings the best of the mod shop to a timeless design
  • Lightweight ash body hugs the player for maximum comfort
  • Satiny "C" maple neck with carbon reinforcement feels great in the hand
  • Diamond J-Bucker humbucking pickups with series/split/parallel mini toggles

Punches well above its price range

This bass is loaded with versatility. You can play legitimately any genre you want with it, and there is a way to make it excel. The diamond J buckers are not some shoddy in-house pickup to avoid higher prices, but are a leap in innovation. The neck is smooth and the nut width should be comfortable for most. The only replaceable thing would be the tuners if you plan on changing climates often (gigging, traveling, etc.) but that would knock a star off of a far more expensive bass, but not one priced like this. Truly, the CV5 is the most underrated bass I have ever played. I own basses ranging from $350 to $3000, and this is my main work horse.

A passive swiss army knife

This is a fantastic bass, but bridge design holds it back from being five stars.

The Schecter CV-5 is solidly built instrument with incredibly versatile electronics. In this age of plugins and floor modelers, I really wanted a passive bass that could handle a wide range of tones since it's easier to replicate an EQ than a pickup. I have coaxed reasonable mimicries of P bass, J bass, and MM tones from the Series/Split/Parallel mini switches, and rather than missing a more traditional blend knob, the guitar style three way pickup selected gives me confidence when changing sounds on the fly mid song.

The finish was flawless, and the construction and QC is a bit better than my MIM P, which should be expected at this price point.

On to my one detractor, it seems like the bridge choice was shoehorned in during the last phases of design. Even lowered completely, I could not get the G saddle as low as I wanted (still well off the fretboard). I was able to get it where I needed it by removing some material from the bottom with a file, but it is frustrating to be setting up a new instrument with nowhere to go but up. The stock strings are also inappropriate for this bridge; the 130 B string does not seat properly in the saddle and will required a tapered B. I feel as though these issues would be non-existent if Schecter had only included some spare saddles for lower action/larger strings.

Additionally, though very minor, due to the five to a size headstock and the 35" scale, this bass will not fit in most cases.
