The Product of Over 50 Years of German Engineering!

When combined with a Schoeps capsule, the CMC 6 provides a flat, natural response with excellent protection from RF interference. The CMC 6 adjusts itself automatically from 12 volts to 48 volts depending on what the microphone amplifier is connected to, which is particularly handy for mobile recording where you're recording on battery power. The CMC 6 is a no-nonsense microphone body that uses symmetrical, transformerless, direct-coupled circuitry for premium sound. What you have here is a pair of CMC 6 microphone amplifiers paired with MK 4 cardioid capsules.

Schoeps microphones are among the most respected in the industry. Since 1948, Schoeps microphones have benefited from innovative German engineering and an ongoing quest for transparency. Their unique designs and impeccable audio characteristics have earned Schoeps microphones a loyal following in classical music and audio for TV and film. With Schoeps microphones, any studio can bolster their microphone locker, adding mics that are not only sonically excellent but steeped in a rich history. When it's time to upgrade your rig, don't settle for microphones that fall short. Reach for Schoeps.

Capture Reality

I came to my MK4's after spending decades with my Neumann KM184's and AKG 451's both of which I still love and use. I think the best way to describe the Schoeps is "unenhanced realism". I am finally hearing the actual sound of my instruments. This can be like a cold slap in the face if you're not ready but this is exactly what I've been craving. When people ask me what do the MK4's sound like I reply "they sound like reality". So if you want your acoustic instruments to sound full-bodied, warm & 3D then go Neumann and Gefell. If you want open, clear and airy go Austrian Audio or AKG. If you want to hear the actual sound of an instrument free of enhancements then these MK4's are your mics.

Pricey Paragon

In April 2023 I bought a matched pair of the Schoeps CMC 6 amplifier with the MK4 capsule. As a classical guitarist recording in my basement, this seemed an apt choice. Schoeps offers a bewildering—at least to me—array of capsules. It's incumbent upon buyers to know what they want. On the plus side, the Schoeps reputation for quality ensures that a less than perfect choice is unlikely to be a disaster. Buying a Schoeps is big investment, to be sure, but it's also a safe one. One seldom sees a bargain priced Schoeps turn up on the used market. Indeed, I've seen an ancient Schoeps that looked like it had been used for batting practice advertised for a price close to new. So buyer's remorse with a Schoeps may be a bit less painful.

To be honest, my first impression was underwhelming. Chalk it up to inflated expectations. Schoeps is the reputed crème de la crème. Among classical guitarists, it's invoked with hushed tones normally reserved for the second coming. I expected my matched pair to arrive with a choir of angels, and once hooked up would reveal the lost chord. It didn't. What it did do was unsparingly expose the limits of my recording chain. Fortunately, I'd already decided to buy a better preamp. When it arrived and slotted into my audio chain, I finally could hear why the fuss over Schoeps was justified.

Among guitarists, there's something of a microphone axiom: DPA for photographic realism—Schoeps for flattering musicality. As I've owned a DPA 2011C pair for years, I was curious to see if this was true. To an extent, it is. DPA is razor sharp. Schoeps is a smidge softer edged. Mind you, this difference is emphatically subtle. And it's easily skewed by other factors. For example, a poorly placed DPA will pale next to a well placed Schoeps, and vice-versa. But with good placement and a stellar chain, the axiom sort of holds. When recording guitar in a warmly reverberant room, some may prefer DPA. In my sonically drab basement, Schoeps is the more forgiving choice.

The equivalent noise of the MK 4 capsule is a pedestrian 14 dB (A-weighted). That worried me. In actual use, however, I find the mic's self noise to be unobtrusive—I notice it only when I crank the gain past my normal listening level. Tone color and dynamic shadings are neatly captured. Once my learning curve kicked in on placing these mics, they became fun and rewarding to use.

With my dream audio chain now in place, I found the resulting sound to be not what I expected. It was different, but in a way that grew on me. The old adage—"be careful what you wish for"—can slice for good or ill. In my case, it took me down a better path. With this caveat in mind, Schoeps may do the same for you. And if the hefty price gives you pause, here's a little known incentive. When you buy a Schoeps, you'll also receive a free membership into the Illuminati. I'm not supposed to reveal this. So please don't spread it around. But I gotta say, their world domination meetings are awesome.

Not what you would expect....but in a good way.

My experience with the Schoeps is that they are not as 'fat' as some mics, but are more natural sounding. Enjoy using them on Dobro also. I tend to run them on either a Fearn or Daking preamp, but they seem to respond well to any decent pre.

None Better.........period.

Great for my kind of on location recording......classical ensembles.
2 mics, 2 channels, 2 ears... with Sound Devices 722.
These complete my mic collection...I'm 72.
(Others are DPA/B&K 4006 pair and AKG C-426B stereo.)
My philosophy: KISS....keep it simple, stupid!
