Records, Plays, Converts, and Looks Great!

I purchased this unit mainly to convert a lot of old cassettes from the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s into digital files using an interface (as seen in the photo with other Sweetwater purchases). Recorded as high quality 24-bit WAV files using Adobe Audition and the L/R RCA "line out" on the back of the unit with RCA to 1/4" jack adapters into the interface. For the first time in decades, I was able to listen to radio air checks from my deceased older brother -- he was a radio DJ and was part of the reason I went into radio and voiceover. The pitch control came in handy as several sections had been recorded at a slightly different speeds. This was the only cassette player on the market with pitch control and quality components, plus the other useful functions; I wasn't about to run 35-45 year-old tapes through one of those cheap USB players.

After completing the tape to digital file project in my voice recording studio, the Tascam unit became part of my home stereo system and fulfilled the other reasons I purchased it: to be a back-up/alternate CD player, to play old music cassettes, and to be able to convert music on compact discs into MP3s on a flash drive for my wife's new car (no CD players anymore, just flash drive ports). It also happens to look great as part of the stereo system! There was a lot of open space in the cabinet I had built for my "old" 1980s system, when I bought all-new components in 2015. Gone was the tape deck, VCR/DVD player, and graphic equalizer. I don't use the Tascam's remote, as I have trained my cat to press buttons on command.

My Sales Engineer Brandon G. was a huge help in the transaction; I always talk to him over the phone, as that's the best and fastest way to get questions answered and have a smooth process. If you do not have a Sales Engineer yet, be sure to ask for him. Also, Kudos to the Sweetwater shipping team -- they always pack things REALLY well!

BEST CASSETTE/CD PLAYER AVAILABLE IN 2024 & A GREAT COMPANION TO TASCAM CASSETTE PORTASTUDIOS!

As someone that has owned a number of vintage tape decks, I was hesitant to buy this unit because of its hefty price tag, but after using it for a couple of months, I have been pleased with its performance. As a standalone CD/Tape player, this is an extremely well made unit and probably the best brand new CD/Tape deck you can buy in 2024 and would be an excellent addition to your home stereo setup. (The rack ears are easily removable if you want to have a more contemporary home hi-fi look and don't want to rack mount the unit.) Through the proper receiver and speakers, the playback quality for cassettes is nothing short of majestic sounding and on par or even better than listening to LPs on my turntable setup. Also, there are several cassettes that I have played in other machines that I thought were worn out, but sound amazing through this unit.

However, the main reason I bought this until was for the USB recording function. During COVID, I found the time to start digitizing the mountain of cassette demos and rehearsal room recordings that I had accumulated since the late 90s. In the past, I've connected a high quality tape deck to a computer and recorded with software like GarageBand or Audacity, but I liked the idea of not having to deal with a computer interface, so I initially began using a small Walkman like device I bought off Amazon with a built in USB connection, but it had extremely poor sound quality and it seemed the pitch was off. (I was unable to find the timing screw on the cheap USB Walkman to correct the issue, luckily the pitch control for this TASCAM tape deck is right on the front of the unit!) I looked for other options but they were limited and this seemed like the best but also most expensive alternative.

The cassette to USB transfer on this unit works well, but only offers an option to record to MP3 instead of .wav or other formats, so the majestic sound you hear when the cassette is playing live is not the same sound you get when you transfer to MP3, however it is adequate and the recordings have very good depth and channel separation. (I've been setting the record level to max just to get a really full sound and may eventually just hook this unit up to a computer to see if I can get better transfer quality using .wav or .flac files.) I was also disappointed to discover that it doesn't automatically detect tracks when transferring so you have to manually create them as it is recording but having the remote control makes that easy with a simple push of a button if you are listening in a chair from across the room. The readout seems a little difficult to read at times because of the blueish white color (orange would have been better) but I've been able to manage. Additionally, I've attached a vintage TASCAM 4-Track Cassette Portastudio to the Line-In input and have been able to create really good sounding mixdown tracks straight to USB instead of mixing down to cassette first, so having this ability is really cool if you are passionate about multitrack cassette recording, however the CD player doesn't have the ability to burn the final tracks directly to disc which is another small disappointing thing about this unit.

In conclusion, despite some of the limitations described above, this is a fine piece of equipment that will probably last quite a while with proper care and maintenance. Unfortunately, the premium price paid is probably because the lack of widespread consumer demand for this kind of audio equipment. $ is still kind of pricey, so I would suggest to try and get it on sale or possibly buy a demo if available, however in my option, if you have an aging cassette collection you need digitized or if you are an artist that enjoys creating new music on the cassette format (you can record straight to cassette via the line in and CD input as well) then this is the best new option available in 2024!

Old School

I still enjoy CDs and have been transferring old cassettes and records to CDs as I am still old school. This works like the last one I wore out.

TASCAM Cassette Deck CD A580 version 2. 2023 release.

This is an extremely well built cassette deck and CD player. If you need a brand new cassette deck with no need to worry about old belts or other parts giving up on you, this one is the only option available. Professional quality build. I tested out all functions. The sound quality from cassette tapes is amazing. High dynamic range. Almost like listening to old vinyl. Recording from cassettes to built in USB was easy and the quality is outstanding even though it's recording 128 bit mp3. CD player is superb.

I'm very happy that I bought this rather than a high end vintage deck from eBay. My initial impression is that this is going to be maintenance free for years.

Also thanks to Nicholas and Alex at Sweetwater for excellent customer service.

128kbs MP3? In 2024?

I bought this unit to replace my old (90s era) tape and cd players, as mine were getting worn out. I have a mountain of CDs and tapes and was wanting to enjoy some of them in my studio. This thing ticked most of the boxes.

Overall the unit is pretty expensive for what it is. I didn't buy it with the conversion as my primary goal; so its not a total waste, but Tascam, come on. The USB recording is locked at 128kbs MP3s for some strange reason. I could understand if this were consumer grade and it was still 2002, but this standard has been out the window for decades. A straight up USB record to .wav file would have been so much better for a professional unit.

Also some similar units have digital outputs, while this one has only old school analog RCA jacks. I knew this going in, so no real strikes against it for this oversight. Just at this price point, one would expect a few modern touches.

Outside of these particular flaws, the unit is solid and useful to anyone with older media. The CD player has played everything i have thrown at it with nary a skip. The tape player is also suitable and played each of the old tapes i selected without breaking or eating them. The USB playback is also fine, but will not playback .wav or .flac files. I threw a few different bit rate MP3s at it and it had no issues with any of them.

Overall, if you know most of the limitations of this thing going in, this unit is fine. The rating here suffers for its lack of modern features and the price.
