Originally only available in Custom Shop Historic Models, Gibson Accessories' Custombuckers are precision voiced to exactly emulate the tone of a vintage PAF humbucker. These pickups are loaded with Alnico 3 magnets — the lowest output of all the commonly used alnico magnets — which are then hand-wound with a slightly denser winding to provide enhanced output. Any PAF aficionado steeped in the history of Gibson’s most popular pickup design might point out that this is not the standard setup for a PAF — and they would be correct! PAF windings and materials varied dramatically throughout the years, resulting in hordes of different “PAF” pickups with wildly different constructions. That being said, Custombuckers capture the true soul of the PAF, excelling in what Sweetwater’s vintage Gibson fanatics find to be its defining characteristics: unmatched articulation, an open and airy quality, plenty of body, and an incredibly dynamic feel. If you’re after an uncompromisingly vintage-style humbucker tone, these are as close as you can get to late-'50s PAF without paying exorbitant vintage prices!
