A Modded-Out Acid Icon

Harkening back to the genesis of EDM, the Behringer TD-3-MO-AM analog synthesizer and sequencer produces the throbbing rhythms and greasy bass sounds that have defined electro-funk, acid, techno, and house for the last 30-plus years. The TD-3-MO is an authentic interpretation of its iconic predecessor, but with a twist! It features an all-analog signal path, a 16-step sequencer, transistor wave-shaping circuitry, a built-in arpeggiator, a 4-pole resonant lowpass filter that oozes with character, and a plethora of killer mods that push its capabilities to the extreme. When the techno and house producers at Sweetwater got their hands on the TD-3-MO, there was no stopping the funk! Grimy, squelching, and unapologetic, the TD-3-MO is a retro-style groove machine reincarnated for contemporary producers and sound designers — and one that you’re sure to love!

Unmistakable analog attitude

The Behringer TD-3-MO’s signature growl and punch start with an authentic analog VCO. Select between a biting, aggressive sawtooth or a bright, resonant square wave to lay the groundwork for your synth bass creations. Then twist and morph them with the TD-3-MO’s 4-pole resonant VCF until they bark, squawk, and shriek. And for total dystopic synth chaos, hit the drive switch and watch your listener’s faces melt.

Powerful, intuitive programming

Programming the TD-3-MO’s onboard 16-step 7-track sequencer is a cakewalk. Compose your patterns in Step mode or use Keyboard mode to play and record them in real time and save up to 250 user patterns for instant recall. Breathe life into your sequences with programmable accents and slides and manipulate them using the TD-3-MO’s 11 controls and 28 switches for dynamic performances. And for even more soundscaping awesomeness, tap into the onboard arpeggiator to build complex, evolving melodies and otherworldly effects.

Anatomy of a mod

In the original units, circuit benders and electronic hobbyists found a perfect modding platform. Like the forward-thinking acid and house producers who salvaged their machines from pawn shops and thrift stores, the modders realized this misunderstood bass beast was at its best when you ditched the manual and drove it beyond its designers’ intentions. The TD-3-MO is packed with some of the most popular tweaks cooked up by the modder community, including a MIDI C/C controllable filter, a variable slide time control, a 3-mode sweep speed switch, an accent sweep switch, a soft attack control, a filter FM control, a bone-rattling sub-oscillator, a gnarly overdrive, and a post-VCA “muffler” distortion circuit for dialing up the aggression. Don’t be fooled by its compact size and relatively simple controls — the TD-3-MO is packed with creative potential and ripe for epic sonic explorations!

Link multiple modules with Poly Chain

The TD-3-MO-AM is a tiny terror all on its own. However, with its Poly Chain output, you can link it to multiple modules for insane 16-voice polyphony. And it plays well with others, easily integrating into your existing synth rig and DAW via 5-pin DIN and USB-MIDI, as a master or slave module.

Behringer TD-3-MO-AM Features:

  • A “modded-out” interpretation of an iconic bass synth module
  • Single oscillator with switchable sawtooth and square waveforms
  • All-analog VCO, VCF, VCA signal path design based on legendary designs
  • 4-pole resonant filter to twist and morph your sounds
  • Powerful programmability, with a 16-step sequencer featuring 7 tracks and 250 user pattern slots
  • Add depth and dimension to your patterns with programmable accents, slides, filter FM, sub-oscillator, overdrive, and real-time parameter manipulation
  • Link multiple modules over Poly Chain for up to 16-voice polyphony

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

TD-3-MO-AM - Modded Out Bliss!

The TD-3-MO "Modded Out" is simply fantastic. In this review, I'd like to break down some of the common questions I've gotten from other musicians.

1) What's "Modded Out" compared to a regular TD-3?
There are several mods. All of them are useful or interesting. Some rise to the top and are worthy of special mention:
- Sub oscillator (three levels, from subtle to intense).
- Filter FM.
- Separate normal and accent decay knobs (!killer!).
- MIDI control over the filter knob (allows very fast filter changes & syncing to patterns).
- Filter tracking.
- Overdrive.
- Extensive slide time controls.

2) Is the TD-3-MO really worth it over the TD-3?
- The mods allow for a much broader range of sounds and modulation over a non-modded TD-3. If it is in your budget, consider getting both. A TD-3 with a TD-3-MO make for a very nice pairing. If you can only pick one, the TD-3-MO's additional capabilities set it clearly in the winner's circle. Yes, it's worth it.

3) Can all the mods be switched off? What about the overdrive?
- All the mods can be turned off except the overdrive (sort of). I've gotten many questions about this from other producers interested in the TD-3-MO. Having now used it, I can tell you there is nothing to worry about. The overdrive doesn't kick in until the top portion of the knob's travel. It offers a different effect than the TD-3's distortion circuit. Many might actually prefer overdrive as it sounds more "musical." If you want that distortion-like sound, add a bit of filter FM with the overdrive turned up. You can make it sound as nasty and dirty as you want while still retaining the good qualities of the overdrive effect.

4) How's the build quality?
- The build quality is on-par with expectations. It is all plastic, but feels much more substantial than competitive gear. I'm a bit of a knob snob and usually swap out OEM knobs with chroma caps. With the TD-3-MO the knobs feel good enough I am not swapping them. They are textured on the side and offer a solid grip. Still plastic, but not jarring.

One legitimate complaint about build quality is the feet leveling. This is true of every single piece of Behringer gear I own (several units). I've tested them across multiple flat and level surfaces. Nearly every one has a "wobble" on a flat surface, including the TD-3-MO. My guess is units are warping slightly during shipping, resulting in a gentle twist. Not sure if Behringer can address this. It isn't difficult to gently twist the chassis back to level, but it is annoying.

Final Thoughts:
The TD-3-MO offers so much more over the regular TD-3 that I think Behringer has created a new classic. I simply can't cover all the little sonic quirks and surprises you'll find using this unit (hint: play with the decay at extreme levels). Combine this with a Behringer RD-8 or RD-9 and you can make albums of music. The TD-3-MO analog workflow offers authentic "Devil Fish" 303 sounds, all in a modern package. Check out YouTube for several great sound demos. As is typical with Behringer products, they offer these units at an almost unbelievable price point. It is easy to recommend the TD-3-MO to any EDM producer from beginner to expert.

Best Bassline Synth I've Ever Played!

Definitely do NOT be intimidated by the deep, dynamic, programmable functionality of this amazingly versatile synth. It's straight forward, easy to use and best of all...I was completely BLOWN AWAY when I heard how it sounds in person. You get the traditional sounds of the original 303, but with a more advanced twist. The range of control you have on sound design, far exceeds that of its original predecessor. Coming from a hybrid, hardware/software user, there are certain components of synthesis that simply aren't possible without the hands-on experience of having this hardware. I couldn't be more surprised. Awesome device, I highly recommend this to anyone looking to advance their basslines or just have a really spicy, modular, lead synth in general.

Nice synth, not really a TD3

really Nice synth, not really a TD3
Had very hard dialing up a simple and familiar 303 sound...
it made me fall in love with my original Behringer TD3 even more.
Sent this one back.

the plain Behringer TD3 thru a Rat or Zoom MS-70CDR is magic.

worth it.

this is a great sounding synthesizer. it may not sound precisely like the late 80s, early 90s rave house acid that you idealize in your imagination (semi-rightfully), but it actually offers a lot of sound design extensions that said 303 does not. therefor, if you are an imaginative and experienced producer of electronic music using Ableton Suite or other tools, you will get more out of this. I have found that many of the things I purchase do not fully meet my expectations, or are a stretch. If you're looking for purist 303, steer clear. If you're looking for 303+++ for the new era, buy immediately. It's a touch dry, a touch digital, and isn't the most analog sounding 303 you'll hear. Just make sure you are prepared to fiddle around with velocity and other issues with sequencing it from a DAW - sequencing from the actual hardware is restricted to pure techno loop applications. You can really capitalize on the strengths of this hardware when you figure out how to sequence it from Ableton. Fiddle with ABL and MIDI modifier automation, in the semitones.
