Tap into the Epic Synth Sounds of the ’80s

By the dawn of the 1980s, analog synthesis had matured to a level of sophistication that nascent digital technology could scarcely hope to match. In the feverish musical creativity of early ’80s, the clangorous sounds of early digital synths were offset by the supremely lush sounds of a new crop of analog synthesizers, both joining forces to spearhead the synth pop insurgency of the coming decade. One such analog synth, the MonoPoly, made its debut in 1981. Equipped with no less than four oscillators (each with multiple waveforms), the MonoPoly was capable of insanely fat sounds and prodigious bass that could blow holes through walls. As good as it was, it was, curiously, only on the market for three years. Today, vintage MonoPolys are quite rare — and rather pricey even if you can find one. But fret not! Sweetwater is proud to present the Behringer MonoPoly, a meticulous reimagining of the coveted beast, seamlessly infused with modern features and reliability.

Four oscillators for insanely fat sounds

The impossibly rich sound of the Behringer MonoPoly is a function of its four true-to-the-original voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs). While many ’70s synths sported two VCOs, having access to three was considered a luxury. The ability to sync and subtly detune oscillators so that they “rubbed” against each other are cornerstone synthesis techniques; having four VCOs to deploy gives you a formidable sonic arsenal to forge a broad range of unique signature sounds.

Vintage authenticity

The Behringer MonoPoly’s pure analog signal path is based on the authentic MonoPoly circuitry as well as other exceptional VCO, VCF (voltage-controlled filter), and VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) designs from the 1980s. These are the sounds that drove iconic hit records from artists such as Depeche Mode and Vince Clarke. Today, the sounds of the ’80s are alive and well in the Behringer MonoPoly. And they can be yours for a song!

Mono or 4-voice paraphonic

Another singular feature of the Behringer MonoPoly — again, faithful to the original — is its ability to split its four voices. The MonoPoly’s variable architecture allows you to use it in either monophonic or 4-voice “Poly” (paraphonic) mode, in which the four oscillators are allocated to individual notes that are then summed to a shared monophonic signal path. In practice, this gives you a huge amount of musical flexibility. From fat basses and searing leads to jazzy chord voicings, MonoPoly has you covered.

Loaded for bear

But there’s more! In addition to its four VCOs, MonoPoly is also outfitted with a classic VCF, two LFOs (low-frequency oscillators), two envelopes, sync and cross modulation, and an arpeggiator. It’s all wrapped up in a roadworthy, vintage-inspired chassis with a control panel you can angle to taste, satisfying knobularity for real-time, hands-on tweakery, 37 great-feeling keys, exhaustive professional I/O, and prototypical wooden end caps. Get your hands on the Behringer MonoPoly. Trust us: you won’t want to let go!

Amazing Reproduction of the Original

This is probably one of my favorite behringer purchases so far. I've been waiting for this keyboard since 1984 and it was totally worth the wait! I have a YouTube channel and I am posting the video here so you guys and gals can check it out. 100% satisfied with this device and as usual sweet waters support and sales team is amazing!

Wow!!!

First off I need to say that no one is better than Sweetwater. I order from them a lot and have never had a bad experience of any kind. I'm somewhere around 20 Behringer synths and 5 Behringer pedals. They are all awesome but this MonoPoly is in my opinion, the perfect synthesizer. It sounds amazing by itself but run it through the Behringer Multi-FX Pedal and prepare to have your mind blown! I'll be adding the VC340 soon.

This has been my favorite synth so far.

Had a Korg MonoPoly, I'm pretty sure I like Behringer's better. To be fair, I got my Korg in 1999 and it wasn't exactly, new.

Behringer's MonoPoly is near perfection in form, function and sound. So far, I can't really tell the difference from my original. And that's comparing it to published studio recordings. Even if there were some sonic differences, they would be minor and... So what! In function alone, this synth is amazing. Korg's virtual instrument version is killer but there's so many knobs on the MonoPoly (wonderfully so). Nothing beats having a labeled knob over a generic MIDI controller knob.

The only issue I have with this synth, and many other USB synths have this... USB noise. It's bad on the MonoPoly I received, the main out volume actually attenuates it. The noise seems to be getting in from the USB and internally leaks over to the analog side. I had to buy a $ USB isolator to get rid of the noise. On the exact same input chain and USB cable, Behringer's Neutron was silent. My studio is silent otherwise.

I have a few support messages with Behringer about this, at one point they seemed to think I had a bad unit. But when I mentioned I fixed it with an isolator, they stopped responding. May have to work with Sweetwater to see if I indeed have a bad unit, or if this noise is inherit with the MonoPoly. As it is with many other USB synths. At least the isolator brought it to a silent output. Unplugging the USB cable also removes the noise. Though I primarily use MIDI, it's nice to keep the USB connected to make configuration changes to the MonoPoly as needed.

The MonoPoly (Korg or Behringer) is my favorite analog synth so far. Behringer's is tank-solid and with MIDI, an easy buy for the studio or stage.

My only real concerns with the MonoPoly are USB noise and it would have been great to have a MIDI channel selection knob on the front too. Otherwise, a super-synth!

Awesome Synth!

My reviews very late here! I bought from the first batch in 2020/2021? It's everything you want it to be, however early models had a VCO grounding issues. They did patch that later so, new ones are all good. But if like me, it's a $ tech fee to get the wire soldered in. If you own a new one and suffer from volume bleed this is the fix!

Wouldn't be the same without it.

Love this synth. Amazing sound. Incredible controls and options. My performances wouldn't be the same without this.
