Studio-quality Pitch Effects with Rock-solid Tracking

Laney's Black Country Customs The 85 is primed and ready to bring the thunder and shake the rafters. This bass octave effects pedal boasts rock-steady pitch tracking and studio-quality sound while arming you with independent control of octave-down and interval voices. You get plenty of hands-on control along with three operating modes, enabling you to easily dial in everything from funky subs to synth-like chords. A tri-color LED offers you a well-defined visual reference to which mode you're in. You also get whisper-silent switching, transparent buffered operation, and a solid metal housing that's ready to rumble. An expression pedal input rounds out this incredible stompbox, granting you real-time control over pitch and level parameters. Bassists looking to add ear-grabbing new dimensions, as well as new methods of expression, to their rigs will wonder how they ever got along without Laney's The 85.

Ergonomically designed 4-knob layout

The bassists here at Sweetwater have coaxed an endless number of inspiring new sounds out of their instruments courtesy of Laney's The 85. And, by virtue of its ergonomic 4-knob layout, finding the sound you're searching for is pretty straightforward. The Focus knob changes the focus of the pedal's two pitch shifters; lower settings remove upper harmonics for a darker sound, and higher settings add more harmonics for a full, synth-like sound. The -Octave knob adjusts the level of the -1 octave-down effect. The Direct knob sets the level for your dry signal. The Interval knob controls the level of the pedal's additional interval, which is determined by the 3-way Interval switch. You get your choice of three operating modes: +12 (+1 octave up), -24 (-2 octaves down), and +7 (+5th up).

Real-time expression

Laney's Black Country Customs The 85 includes an expression input with two different operating modes. In Pitch mode, your expression pedal gives you continuous, real-time control over the pitch of the -Octave, the Interval, or both. In Level mode, your expression pedal gives you real-time control over the level of the -Octave, the Interval, or both. Adding an expression pedal to The 85 gives it a level of playability well beyond that of static effect pedals.

Fantastic!

I love octave pedals and own a few. This one has quickly become one of my favorites. It tracks well and has useful and functional features that allow you to really dial in a great sound. I can't leave out Sweetwater's always exceptional customer service and follow up. If you're like me and love octave pedals this is one you have to have in your collection.

Worth the time to get to know it

This pedal probably has the best tracking of any bass octave pedal. It is near impossible to get it to produce any undesired tracking artifacts that are the common drawback of other bass octave pedals.

I had bought mine used at a local store without packaging, and couldn't find any manuals online for the pedal, so I emailed Laney customer support and they emailed the manual to me later evening!

The controls are the least intuitive of any pedal I own. Even with the manual and even though there are only 4 knobs, it takes time sitting with the pedal to figure out how they work in relationship with each other.

I find the magic is unlocked with using an expression pedal and adding modulation after, such as chorus or reverb. You can set the expression pedal to control any of the 4 knobs! However, it takes a bunch of tries to understand how to dial in the sweep of it. You can definitely use the pedal without an expression pedal, and just enjoy the unique analog sound... but... just ask your sales engineer about an expression pedal and get one. I'm using a Dunlop mini volume I had laying around, works great.
