Robert Keeley approached building the 4-in-1 series as if it were a form of pedal modeling for hardware enthusiasts. Not only do the pedals bring Keeley’s prized boutique spin to classic circuits, but they also let you mix and match tone controls and gain/clipping styles. Customization results via two simple toggles located beneath corresponding control knobs. Setting both toggles up or both down gives you a pure re-creation of classic circuits — an incredible value in itself — but the pedal’s worth is further evidenced when you combine different circuits in new ways.
For instance, the EQ curves of both circuits look nearly identical on paper (two tilt-style EQs with scooped mids around noon). However, the MF tone control is a much different beast, with heaving boosted bass and a touch-sensitive response. The “DS” section provides more levelheaded EQ with the lows tightened and a reduced midrange scoop, providing perfect fuel for speed-oriented genres such as metal, punk, and hardcore. Sweetwater guitarists had a blast pairing the DS distortion with the fuzz’s exaggerated tone control.
