Mic a Concert Piano Without a Stand

The Audio-Technica ATM350PL aims to rid recital halls of bulky mic stands one piano at a time. This tiny condenser mic mounts neatly to the metal frame of a concert grand using a finish-safe magnetic mounting system. Its low-distortion, full-range pickup faithfully captures the brilliant harmonics and powerful bass of your instrument — all the way down to E1. And though the ATM350PL is designed for solo use, it's even more impressive in pairs, offering a rich stereo field that can be panned for a lifelike listening experience. A flexible 9" gooseneck helps the ATM350PL find the right balance between bass and treble strings.

A stage condenser for any source

The ATM350 goes where other mics fear to tread — like inside the bell of a screaming trumpet or atop a rock drum kit. Even at high SPLs, this low-profile condenser microphone presents a crisp, quick, balanced sound on brass instruments, woodwinds, piano, drums, and strings. Its cardioid polar pattern reduces pickup from the rear and sides for effective feedback rejection, while its in-line 80Hz highpass filter cleans up stage noise for a cleaner mix.

Magnetic mounting system requires no stand

The ATM350PL's stable microphone mount secures to the metal frame of your piano using powerful neodymium magnets, while a 9" flexible gooseneck helps you find the sweet spot between the bass and treble strings. There's no risk to your piano as a felt surface protects the mount from marring finishes. If you want to create a cleaner look for your stage, Sweetwater recommends capturing your piano performance with the low-profile, high-performance Audio-Technica ATM350PL.

Violin mount and carrying case add value

In addition to the mic and mount, the Audio-Technica ATM350PL includes a hook-and-loop bridge mount for violins, along with a carrying case for protection in transit.

Audio-Technica AT350PL Piano Microphone Package:

  • The clean way to mic a grand piano onstage
  • 9" gooseneck captures the right balance between bass and treble strings
  • Use in pairs for lifelike stereo effects
  • Magnetic AT8491PL frame mount eliminates the need for a stand
  • Handles high SPLs (159 dB) without overloading
  • Full frequency response (40Hz-20kHz) faithfully captures the deep bass and rich harmonics of your instrument
  • Cardioid pickup pattern elicits a natural sound while fighting feedback
  • In-line 80Hz highpass filter fights stage noise
  • Violin mount expands the ATM350's applications
  • Carrying case protects the mic in transit

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Fantastic sound

These are a fair price and sound great. I really like the magnetic mounting. This setup is so much cleaner than the cross bar stand I used to use for mic'ing. I am using this on a beautiful baby grand. Sounds great with the lid open or closed .

LOVE these mics for piano!

I've used top notch mics for micing a piano from Neumann, DPA, AKG, etc. All of them were great in their own way. The one issue with all of the standard condenser mics was leakage from other instruments - especially drums in a live setting.

I bought a pair of the ATM350PL mics from Paul Allen here at Sweetwater for a jazz date I was doing (piano, sax, acoustic bass, and drums). Even with the grand piano lid open, these mics captured a beautiful whole open piano tone with very little leakage from other instruments in a VERY live room.

The magnet base that holds the mic to the piano works well and also isolates the mic from mechanical noises like piano pedals, etc.

Highly recommended for situations where budget and performance are a consideration!

solid choice for piano recording/amplification

So I bought PL variant of the ATM350, a matched pair with magnetic piano mounts that just stick to frame.

I'm not aware of any other piano specific mic sets at this price point ($) so I figured what the heck, let's just get it and see what happens.

My 1990 Yamaha G2R (5'7" baby grand) is not the finest piano ever made, but my tech has done a good job making it as good as can be for the size and age.

And the mics reproduce the sound pretty much as is. That's it, no more no less. I can think of better ways to record a piano, but my living room doesn't sound amazing so close mic'ing is the best option here and these mics do that just fine.

I think these were probably made for live situations were the piano needs to be amplified as well as recorded, the sound is not larger than life, but it kind of sits in the mix right even without any processing.

I'd want at least extra mics if I were to do an intimate solo piano recording, but for recording (and amplifying) piano in a band setting, I think these mics do a fine job!

Do not recommend

I really wanted to like these mics, but they need a ridiculous amount of gain, which creates the danger of feedback, the sound is "canned" rather than natural. They sound objectively worse than the MXL's we have used for years, no matter how I EQ them.
