Reviews

Carol Kaye sound
Recently switched my vintage Fender Jazz bass from roundwound strings to Fender flatwounds and love the tone without rolling off. I run the bass wide open and sometimes even play with a pick to get that 60s sound.
Still have Rotosound Swing 66 on the Rickenbacker.

Replaced round wound to get more upright feel;
very pleased with the result!
Should have done this way sooner
TLDR; Made my cheap bass play like a dream, easy on the fingers, and I'm never going back to round wounds.

I picked up a Squier Affinity Jazz Bass and a practice amp as my mid-life crisis / COVID hobby. It's now 2025 and I finally got up the nerve to swap out my strings. Best inexpensive upgrade ever! I love the sound of these, and particularly the feel of them under my fingers. I went with the Fenders because the price was lower than the other flat wounds. (I wasn't sure if I'd like them and didn't want to invest a lot in something that might not pan out.) After playing for just a few minutes I questioned why I waited so long. They have the sound I've been chasing by trying to adjust my pickup volumes and tone. And best of all, they don't feel like my fingers are pressing against sandpaper like the old round wounds they replaced.

Best Flats I've Tried
When I got my first fretless (Fender Player Series Jazz Bass, I bought a few different brands of flats to try out on them. These strings, at least to my ears, sounded better than the other two sets I tried. They also seemed to have good response up and down the fingerboard. On the other two there were certain notes that seemed a little muted with not as much sustain. Not so with these strings. I like them a lot, and the price is right. I'd recommend them.

Flatwound Bargain
I play flatwounds exclusively, and have tried many. These have been on my #1 gigging bass for the past year. They stand out for their price, feel, sound and durability.

These are excellent strings. They don't have the fat mids of some other flats, like La Bella DTBs, instead, they have more highs and a more relaxed feel. The low E has a slightly lower tension than most comparable sets of strings. I like that because I feel that it sounds and intonates better, but I can see some people wanting a more uniform feel.

These darken with age, but not that fast. Mine are about a year old, and still have some nice high end. If you want dark, back off the tone. They're very versatile strings. If you're familiar with D'Addario Chromes, these aren't identical, but they sound and feel similar. For whatever reason, I think that the Fenders sound and feel just a touch more supple than the equivalent Chromes.

Great strings.
