AES3 and S/PDIF I/O with Flexibility

The MOTU 8D interface is a smart USB solution when you need digital connectivity for your DAW, and a compact-yet-powerful way to add I/O to your AVB audio network. It's equipped with two stereo pairs of AES3 digital I/O, plus two stereo pairs of RCA S/PDIF I/O. You also have access to 64 channels of USB I/O, as well as 32 channels of AVB network I/O. Built-in DSP processing allows you to add spot-on emulations of vintage EQs, compressors, reverb, and more, without taxing your host computer and with ultra-low latency. The MOTU 8D can even operate as a standalone mixer, and can be controlled wirelessly via Wi-Fi (router not included).

Connect to your computer, audio network, or iOS device

With USB 2.0 and AVB Ethernet connectivity, the 8D is ready to connect to your computer, AVB audio network, or iOS device. It can even be controlled via Wi-Fi, allowing you to route signals, apply effects processing, and create multiple mixes, all wirelessly from your iPad or laptop.

Record, convert, split, and mix

The MOTU 8D is a great choice for connecting your existing converters and recording to your Mac, PC, or iOS device. Beyond typical audio interface duties, Sweetwater engineers discovered that the 8D is a flexible tool for all manner of tasks. Use it to mix up to 48 channels of digital audio, while applying world-class DSP-based effects and processing, all with ultra-low latency. Convert S/PDIF signals to AES/EBU and vice versa. Or split one input source to multiple outputs — whether you're in a recording, broadcast, or performance environment, the 8D offers the control you need to integrate with large-scale systems.

Comprehensive metering and simple front-panel controls

The 8D's full-color LCD screen displays signal activity for all inputs and outputs. And while the front-panel controls are very simple (only five buttons plus a headphone volume control), they provide full access to all hardware functions.

Included audio analysis tools

When you're managing hundreds of channels of digital audio in a large-scale facility, the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems fast is paramount. The 8D's software interface gives you access to precision analysis tools including a full-screen, real-time FFT display, a spectrogram waterfall display, an oscilloscope, an X-Y plot, and a phase analyzer.

DSP emulations of classic hardware EQs, compressors, and more

Built-in DSP means you can apply outstanding effects processing to any input or output on the 8D, without taxing your host computer or adding latency. And these aren't generic effects — tap into compression modeled after the legendary LA-2A, EQ modeled after British analog mixing consoles, vintage reverb, and more.

MOTU 8D USB/AVB Audio Interface Features:

  • Compact audio interface with 8 channels of digital I/O (S/PDIF, AES/EBU)
  • Offers standalone operation, plus wireless control via Wi-Fi (requires router, not included)
  • Built-in DSP to apply studio-quality EQ, compression, reverb, and more
  • 48-channel console-style mixer with 7 stereo aux buses, 3 stereo groups, and access to 64 network inputs
  • Connects to your Mac or PC via USB 2.0 (supports USB 3.0 and iOS)
  • Connects to your AVB network via Ethernet
  • Daisy-chain multiple interfaces via Ethernet to add more I/O
  • Built-in headphone output for monitoring
  • Ultra-low latency

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Works great for AES/EBU-to-USB interfacing

I use this unit in Mastering to convert the output of my Crane Song HEDD-192 AES/EBU output to a USB connection mack to my Mac or PC. Works just fine. The Discovery and Browser configuration tool works fine for routing changes and such. I detect no errors in the conversion process. The headphone jack can be set to provide a suitable output for metering.

Great little unit. The only gripe I have is that should you use the Word Clock In function or AES/EBU Clock In function where the 8D can sync to my HEDD-192 Master clock, the 8D does NOT automatically adjust to changes in clock frequency. It can automatically sync to the clock, but not auto-detect as older MOTU products can, such as the 24CoreIO was able to. You must manually use the faceplate buttons to change the clock. That's frustrating, should you want to place the device in a place where it may not be easily accessible.

possible bios problems

the xlr connectors in the back do not detect jbl mk1 5 inch monitors(or anything else).under the device tab, all options only display the headphones as output. i don't believe this to be a hardware issue but a bios/software issue. the only detectable output comes from the headphone jack. tech support(motu) already has a ticket out on this issue, but it has been months since any kind of response. its really too bad considering that i chose this interface based on my home studio needs. i was also annoyed that the ethernet connection has to specifically be an AVB ehternet, otherwise it is automatically disabled(it will not function other than updating the firmware over regular ethernet). if that was clear in the advertisement, i would not have purchased this unit.
