A Next Generation Reimagining of Taylor's Flagship Acoustic

The Next Generation 814ce heralds an innovative, new era of acoustic-electric excellence for Taylor Guitars, augmenting the brand’s flagship model with road-proven Claria electronics and a fuller-bodied spin on V-Class bracing. The latter of these features, dubbed Scalloped V-Class bracing, opens up this Grand Auditorium’s low-end response with a deep, rich character, splitting the difference between V-Class’s precise balance and a warmer, more X-brace-adjacent tone. This cutting-edge advancement in bracing technology supports the time-tested 814ce recipe of a Sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides — a tonewood duo that only bolsters the natural brawn of Scalloped V-Class bracing with ringing overtones and a voluminous projection. Plug in, and Taylor’s refined Claria electronics faithfully capture the Next Generation 814ce’s complex acoustic character with plug-and-play simplicity, supported by soundhole-mounted Volume, Tone, and Mid-Contour controls. Plus, this 814ce’s Standard Carve mahogany neck and glassy Crelicam ebony fingerboard are joined to the body via Taylor’s trailblazing Action Control neck system, thus allowing users to set the neck’s angle with the simple turn of a bolt. Capped off with a classic collection of 814ce appointments — including a radiused rosewood armrest, natural maple binding, and stunning inlays — the Taylor Next Generation 814ce strikes a perfect balance between expressive acoustic-electric performance and sheer 6-string luxury.

Plug-and-play Claria System electronics

Road-tested and refined for over two years with the world's biggest touring acts, Taylor’s Claria System represents the next step in the brand’s ceaseless pursuit of acoustic-electric excellence. As opposed to the more sensitive and microphone-like performance of Taylor’s ES2, the Claria System features a single under-saddle piezo transducer paired with a powerhouse preamp to supply you with the warmest, most accurate acoustic-electric tone possible with the least amount of tweaking required — simply plug in, adjust your sound to taste via the Volume, Tone, and Mid-Contour controls, and you’re ready to go.

So, how does the Claria System differ from a typical under-saddle pickup? Taylor’s expert engineers built Claria from the ground up to overcome the most endemic challenges of standard under-saddle setups, allowing the system to perform free from piezo distortion and avoid unwanted frequencies with its clear and focused voice. Moreover, Claria also avoids clipping by gain staging the preamp and the controls within the preamp. As for tone shaping, Claria’s Mid-Contour control offers a vast sweep of dynamic sounds to explore, from smooth, rhythm-ready warmth to a midrange-forward timbre that promotes lead playing and fingerpicking to the forefront of the mix. For the guitarist seeking a plug-and-play system that preserves their guitar's inherent acoustic character and excels in any environment without a fuss, Taylor’s Claria system is as good as it gets.

Rich and responsive Scalloped V-Class bracing

First launched in 2018, Taylor’s V-Class bracing revolutionized the brand’s sound with one of the most innovative advancements in steel-string technology in nearly a century. Here, Taylor has changed the game once again, tweaking the forward-thinking formula of V-Class by precisely paring away material from key locations of each brace.

The result is Taylor’s Scalloped V-Class architecture, a design that preserves all the defining sonic features of standard V-Class bracing with a more muscular bass response and a softer, warmer blend among notes. Strum an open cowboy chord, and Scalloped V-Class delivers the familiar low-end thump and harmonic cohesion that’s most often associated with typical X-braced instruments. However, as a direct descendant of Andy Powers’ original V-Class design, Scalloped V-Class bracing preserves the former’s spot-on pitch accuracy, rich sustain, impeccable balance, and crisp note-to-note definition — especially as you venture farther up the fingerboard with complex chords, intricate fingerpicked patterns, and rapid-fire leads.

Cutting-edge Action Control neck joint

Taylor has led the charge in neck joint technology for decades, from Bob Taylor’s earliest bolt-on experiments to the dawn of the easily adjustable NT Neck at the turn of the 20th century. Under the leadership of Andy Powers, Taylor has once again pushed the boundaries of steel-string design with the Action Control Neck, a trailblazing bolt-on system that allows you to adjust the neck angle without requiring removal of the neck or strings.

From fine adjustments to optimizing the neck’s pitch over the top, the Action Control Neck gives you the power to set your string height from shred-ready specs to a higher, strum-friendly action with the turn of a bolt. Moreover, it also transforms repairs that generally require major surgery on traditional glued-in dovetail joints (such as neck resets) into a straightforward, routine procedure. Best of all, the Action Control Neck’s long-tenon joint protrudes well into the heel to properly mate your guitar’s neck and body, increasing the stiffness of the heel and resulting in a deeper tone with greater low-end resonance, even on higher notes.

A classic tonewood combination

Nothing beats the sound of rosewood topped with spruce. As a top tonewood, Sitka spruce offers a combination of strength and elasticity that delivers a broad dynamic range with crisp articulation, making it ideal for a wide range of playing styles, from delicate fingerpicking to aggressive flatpicked strumming. Used for the back and sides of the 814ce, Indian rosewood’s extended frequency range and rich, musical tonality have elevated it to premium status among tonewoods. Its potent low end can serve up a throaty growl, while sparkling treble notes ring out with bell-like clarity. Slightly scooped in the midrange (compared to mahogany), rosewood acoustic guitars are perfect for solo performance, vocal accompaniment, and tracking in sparse arrangements.

Grand Auditorium body style delivers a full sound and sleek look

Acoustic players all over the world — including many here at Sweetwater — routinely reach for Taylor Grand Auditorium guitars like the Next Generation 814ce. This guitar boasts a comfortable waist, a full range of sounds, sharp definition, and a sleek appearance, making it an excellent intermediate option for fingerpickers and singer/songwriters alike. With this level of prestige, it's no wonder so many players depend on its rich sounds and smooth playing, set after set.

I’ve played a lot of Taylor guitars over the years and have always gravitated toward the flagship 814ce. With the new “next gen” upgrades, I think Taylor has elevated their lineup. The scalloped V-Class bracing brings a warm balance to the Taylor sound, and the Claria pickup was stage-ready with no fuss. This is my new go-to gigging guitar! - Mac McDonough, Product Research Team

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Reviews

814ce Next Generation Taylor
This is Taylor at its best. Looks and plays beautifully. Quality workmanship, quality sound as expected from a Taylor. Rosewood and Spruce along with the V-Class X Bracing set up has a superior tone. Well worth the price.

Worth it.
Well Well, the bridge set-up was it for me. I have a Baby Taylor, 314ce and 514ce. I have done my own work on them and love them. This action control for set-ups is easier than an electric. It plays like an electric. Very glad I bought it. Thnx to Jon, who I ask many questions, for helping with everything. I kept him on the phone a couple of days.
Next Generation Taylor 814CE
I was hesitant buying an acoustic online without being able to play or hear it. So I took the chance and to my surprise, it played and sounded great. The action was great all the way up the neck. Played smoothly, looked better than the photos online. Ethan, my sales rep did a great job and keep me informed. Sweetwater will be my goto store, I've purchased other items from them (Sweetwater) with great service and quality.
Some problems with this model

First, let me say that the Sweetwater staff and customer support sre fantastic. I had to send my first 814ce back becuase it developed a buzz under the saddle after a few days. Sweetwater: no questions asked, arranged for a very fast replacement. Kudos to this company.

Now, the guitar. Intonation is the best I have ever had on any guitar. The sound for a grand auditorium size is startlingly large and clear. Excellent bass, mids shine, and the high end isn't harsh and doesn't get lost in the bass and mids. It is a wonderful sounding and playing guitar. I like jumbos, but this guitar model competes with both of my jumbos--and sounds better. The bevelled body is a real help for comfortable playing. So: the woods, the design, the scallopped bracing, etc., make for a potentially great package. Alas... some serious quality control problems.

The first one which I sent back had a loose hanging wire inside the body. Unacceptable for a guitar in this price range. After a a few days an annoying buzz started coming from under the saddle. It got worse, so I had to send it back. The fret ends were semi-sharp! insufficiently rounded for a guitar in this price range and the so-called "flagship" of Taylor guitars.

I received a replacement within two days (before Sweetwater had even received my return--Bravo Sweetwater)

Got the second one. Better fret ends, great sound and intonation. However, now after three weeks an annoying buzz is coming from the exact same area as the first guitar. Not as bad, but it's there and you can hear it--especially at 4 am which is when I begin practicing. I am concerned that it is going to get worse--like the first one--and I will have to bring this brand new very pricey guitar in for repair. I don't know if it's the piezo crystals, a poorly routed undersaddle or what--but it's very dissapointing. I assume I could send it back--again--but as easy as Sweetwater makes the return process, it's still a disappointing painSweetwater says you can return an instrument within a "reasonable" amount of time--30 days or less, which is very good.

The pickup system is good, better than your average piezo. I still prefer the Taylor expression system which has a more natural sound, but for a piezo it's much better than average and easy to dial in a good sound. Also, no holes in the guitar. If I don't want to hear the piezo, I just mic it (many have forgotten this sensible option of days gone by).

Verdict: Great sound, amazing intonation. Very easy to play. However, the quality control issues are inexcusable for this model--or for any guitar in this price range.
