A Superb Reproduction of a 1961 Semi-hollowbody Classic

Searching for a vintage ES-335 to call your own? Well, you can keep combing antique instrument shops, preparing to spend upwards of $20,000, or you can grab a Gibson Custom 1961 ES-335 Reissue. This spot-on re-creation of Gibson’s legendary semi-hollowbody electric guitar hits all the right notes, with vintage-accurate construction and components, plus true-to-the-original fit and finish. This guitar’s resonant 3-ply semi-hollowbody delivers just the right vibe, while its bang-on skinny C-shaped neck yields the classic playability you’ve been dreaming of. Plug in, and Gibson’s Custombucker pickups serve up smoky humbucker tones that recall those glorious days of yore. Beautifully sculpted body contours and vintage-replica parts complete this superbly crafted guitar. The 1961 ES-335 Reissue offers a playing and ownership experience that’s guaranteed to keep you coming back for more.

As close to a vintage ES-335 as you’re going to find

Playing the 1961 ES-335 Reissue is like playing an actual 1961-built semi-hollowbody. Gibson painstakingly rendered every curve and contour of the original instrument, re-creating its rounded cutaways, neck taper, and color in magnificent detail. In fact, they spent a year studying, scanning, and listening to an original 1961 ES-335 in order to ensure spot-on accuracy. And the guitarists here at Sweetwater agree that they’ve succeeded — from the pearloid dot fingerboard inlays right down to the vintage-replica parts. The 1961 ES-335 Reissue is the real deal (or at least as close as you’re going to get without taking out a second mortgage).

Historic appointments are more authentic than ever

If you want all that an original 1961 ES-335 has to offer, you'll appreciate this superb reproduction. Its solid mahogany neck is attached using hide glue, which lasts longer than synthetic glue, and to some, even improves the guitar's sound. Gibson also re-engineered the truss rod, truss rod washer, and anchor to their original forms. They also eliminated the tubing that surrounded the truss rod — all subtle yet important changes to both the durability of the ES-335 and its overall tone. Classic Kluson Double Ring tuners and Top Hat knobs are also featured on the Gibson Custom 1961 ES-335 Reissue and lend even more visual vintage vibe and style.

Unpotted Custombucker pickups deliver vintage PAF tone

Gibson paid just as much attention to the 1961 ES-335 Reissue's electronics as they did to its aesthetics. Beginning with CTS 500K audio taper potentiometers and paper-in-oil capacitors, every part of this semi-hollowbody electric guitar’s internal signal path was designed to give you absolutely dead-on 1961 ES-335 tone. Of course, it's next to impossible to find genuine '50s PAFs (even for Gibson). Instead, the 1961 ES-335 sports a pair of unpotted Custombucker humbuckers. Boasting Alnico III magnets, Gibson’s Custombuckers are one of the most historically accurate PAF copies ever. You just won't find another ES-335 that comes as close to the original look, sound, and feel of a 1961 ES-335.

Vintage Original Sheen finish, for the look and feel of a classic

Gibson Custom's Vintage Original Sheen finish option comes standard on Custom Shop Historic Reissue models. The VOS finish package includes lightly aged parts that imparts an authentic vintage patina. The nitrocellulose finished it buffed to a light matte appearance, giving a look and feel of a guitar that has been lovingly played and cared for over the years.

Gibson Custom 1961 ES-335 Reissue Features:

Why Buy Your Guitar from Sweetwater?

See how Sweetwater goes to great lengths to give you the very best online guitar buying experience. From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Classic Neck, Sound, Service and Quality

I received my Gibson 1961 ES-335 Reissue and got a good play in today. I had a GREAT time! :-) I wanted the 1961 ES-335 model as it has the authentic '61 Skinny C neck. The neck is really comfortable, plays great and the pickups have that classic sound (dirty or clean). The quality of the build met my high expectations of Gibson. It is a beautiful guitar. I would definitely recommend this model if you prefer the Skinny C neck. It is not a chunky as the modern 335 model.

Also, a BIG THANK YOU once again to Matthew, my Sweetwater Sales Engineer, for the fantastic support. Thank you!

Worth every cent

Just bought one and haven't play another guitar in my 25 guitar collection in over a month. This thing is absolutely the most beautiful guitar I've ever played in my 50 years as a musician. Nice slimmer neck is so comfortable to play. The tone is to die for. It's expensive but worth every cent !!

Gibson ES-335 61 custom reissue VOS Vintage Burst

Yes I purchased this guitar. Excellent workmanship Gibson custom shop, during a recent stop at the Sweetwater Store I played both the 61 and 64 reissue, I prefer the thin C speed neck of the 61, it just fits me and feels right in my hand. I played a real 61 with this same neck profile in the early seventies and this guitar felt like home as soon as I picked it up. Right out of the box it played like butter, the string height is just right for me. The fret ends are nicely finished and smooth, bending strings is easy with note clarity, the intonation was perfect. I love the pickups and tone of this guitar in all three pickup positions. I'm 68 years young and I play blues, 70's rock, and country, I play "Sweetie" (yes, that's her name) through a vintage 76 Fender Deluxe amp with vintage tubes and this guitar can cover all my bases. I can not find one defect of fit or finish on this guitar. If you are into distorted heavy metal it may not be the guitar for you, but if you are on a search for tone this guitar may be what you're looking for, it was for me.

1961 Gibson ES-355 Reissue

Forty years ago my van was stolen. Inside the van I had two guitars. A Martin D-28 and a '61 sunburst Gibson 335. The van was found but the guitars disappeared. I always missed that ES-335 but didn't have the money to replace it.

When Gibson announced this 335 reissue in Vintage Burst I was skeptical but ordered one from my Sweetwater sales engineer. The guitar arrived in a bulky generic case with a hastily installed Gibson badge riveted on crooked. Not a good sign. But when I opened the case I immediately saw my original 335 but in immaculate condition. My biggest concern was would the neck be like my old one. It is exactly the same slim C shape and is the fastest and most playable neck I have ever played. The two Humbucking pickups are period correct and almost identical to vintage PAF's in tone quality. The guitar is a work of art, just like the original. Gibson got it right (except for the case.)
