Lakland Quality for an Amazing Price!

Whether you're playing the local bar scene Friday nights, carrying the rhythm Sunday mornings, or blazing the tour circuit seven days a week, the Lakland Skyline 55-01 Standard bass has the sonic flexibility and precise feel you need. You'll have exceptional access to the entire fretboard thanks to the deep cutaway. And with Bartolini pickups and a 3-band EQ, you'll be able to hit your bass amplifier or direct box with your tone dialed in. So, if you want more from your bass without spending more for your bass, then the 55-01 Standard by Lakland is perfect for you!

Distinct Lakland body design

Lakland's Skyline 55-01 Standard features a distinct and recognizable body shape. The comfortable, offset waist design has a great balance and feel. The Skyline 55-01 Standard even gives you the same custom-contoured curves, bridge, and pickups as Lakland's high-end version.

Active pickups and preamp

No matter what style of music you play, Sweetwater is confident the Lakland pickup system will give you every tone you could want. The Skyline 55-01 Standard bass sports dual Bartolini MK-1 pickups and a Bartolini preamp. These active electronics give your instrument serious punch, plus extra expression across the whole fingerboard. Split-coil, soap-bar pickups give you everything from fat, aggressive tones to mellow and warm tones.

Longer scale length for better B-string tone

Bassists at Sweetwater especially like Lakland five-string basses because their longer 35" scale length holds the low B string at a higher tension. This means that your lowest notes will have more punch and impact, with more note definition too. If you've played a few five-string bass guitars you know that some of them can sound quite flubby in the lowest registers - with the Lakland Skyline 55-01 Standard your tone will stay tight and pronounced right down to the low B.

Lakland Skyline 55-01 Standard 5-string Bass Features:

  • An affordable bass with active pickups and 3-band EQ
  • Bartolini pickups and preamp for a wide range of tones
  • Tighter, punchier B-string tone thanks to the longer 35" scale length
  • Quality tonewoods include ash and maple
  • Comfortable for long gigs
  • Perfect for any style of music

Outstanding 5 String Value

First off, Sweetwater Sales and Support, Grade A+. Stephen Dibble is outstanding and like all representatives I have spoken with at Sweetwater, It is the reason I do ALL of my business transactions here. Over the past 10 years, I have spent a great deal of money on instruments and accessories. Sweetwater has never let me down once.

Owned and played this bass for 2 weeks now. Gigged out twice. Here's my 2 cents:

1. High Quality Craftsmanship. Neck is awesome. Bridge, Lightweight tuners all top shelf. All I have for reference is some of my previous basses, being a Sterling Ray 34 and a Fender Players PBass. Both of those were excellent but this is better to me.
2. B String. Very Clear, defined. 35" scale is really nice
3. Frets: Plek'd and really even across the bass. There are some rough fret ends though. That's why it gets half a star deducted. A bit disappointed by this, but off to my luthier. $30 bucks later, she'll be tip top. Really love the Maple fret board.
4. Body finish: personal taste but really outstanding. Gloss finish is immaculate and the wood grain is stunning.
5. Pickups. Very Good as far as my ear says. No issues here
6. Pre-amp: People complain about it, but on our big JBL array system at church, it sounded Fat, Warm and there was alot of definition and clarity. Sounds the same on my Fender Rumble 200 at home. I never felt it was tinny or too much high end or Brittle. Our FOH said it sounded really nice in the mix. Good enough for me. I am not one to change stuff for the sake of change. I plan on running this for at least a year to see how it all works out, but as of now, I don't plan on changing anything stock as far as electronics.

Overall, I recommend this bass highly. Its not a swiss army knife of basses, but that's not what I was looking for. It has a very distinct and warm presence in the mix. YMMV, but I am sold. A new Lakland fan right here.
Music background: Weekend Warrior, Worship and outreach bands, Keys and Bass for many years

Smooth As Butta

The Good: Played a lot basses in my 40 yrs of playing, heard a lot about Laklands but the shape of Fender Jazz bass body ( my bias ) eyes kept me away from the Lakland shape basses. I repent for being narrow minded, the smooth effortless butta playing neck allows me to play effortlessly. The tones from vintage jazz, music man etc.., are all available. This is an all around the way bass. But wait ,this is just the low level bass. The barts are fine in my book, when I couple it with my Eden WTDI pedal why change the pickups. The so called noise with the pre-amp pedal is minuscule and I'm picky.

The Bad: Came with a bad, bad shaky volume pot. Sweetwater support has given me a satisfied resolution.

The Ugly : My previous attitude towards Lakland

Does your favorite bass always leave you wanting more? That's how it was for many of us at Sweetwater, until we got our hands on Lakland basses. We love these instruments because they take the iconic designs we know and kick them up a notch. When Lakland bass models go through our 55-point Evaluation, Sweetwater guitar techs can't help but notice the consistency of their superior craftsmanship - they're among the finest instruments we see. Speaking of consistency, whether you're picking up a classic 44-94 or a more affordable Skyline series model, you'll love the way these basses play, and whether you prefer boutique passive pickups or premium active electronics, look no further than Lakland.
