Taylor’s 517e Grand Pacific Builder’s Edition

With its unique round-shoulder dreadnought silhouette, revolutionary V-Class bracing, and dramatically different tonal personality, the 517e Grand Pacific Builder’s Edition blazes new ground for Taylor. Featuring premium all-solid tonewoods — neo-tropical mahogany for the back and sides and a torrefied Sitka spruce top — this alluring acoustic-electric guitar delivers a seductively bold and versatile tonal profile that is perfectly amplified by the onboard ES2 electronics. As your eyes drink in this instrument’s understated elegance, your hands savor its flawless playability while your ears revel in its warm, rich, organic tone. The 517e Grand Pacific Builder’s Edition is a feast for the senses.

Grand Pacific: innovation and evolution

With the Grand Pacific, Taylor master luthier Andy Powers has fulfilled the potential of V-Class bracing as a robust tone-shaping platform. The Grand Pacific demonstrates proof-of-concept that V-Class architecture is an ideal cornerstone for guitars with a versatile range of musical personalities that will appeal to a broad swath of players cross-genre. Inspired by the diverse acoustic guitar sounds on the records he heard while growing up in Southern California, Andy set out to diversify Taylor’s tonal palette by designing a guitar with a different sound profile.

A bold new round-shoulder guitar from Taylor

Although V-Class bracing gave Andy more ways to control a guitar’s tonal character, Andy also knew a new body shape would be required, something with roughly the dimensions of a dreadnought. With V-Class, he could eliminate the undesirable sonic characteristics generally ascribed to dreadnoughts. All this led to the round-shoulder dreadnought design Taylor calls the Grand Pacific. The Grand Pacific’s overall sound is warm and seasoned, producing notes that overlap more to create a smooth, blended sound. Its wider waist delivers more low-frequency power; the problematic low-end woodiness often associated with dreadnoughts is eliminated by the V-Class bracing.

V-Class bracing: a sonic revelation

Bracing is the internal framework of an acoustic guitar that helps shape its sound. Although X-bracing has been standard in acoustic guitars for over a century, it creates an innate conflict between two key elements of a guitar’s sound: volume and sustain. The guitar’s top (its soundboard) contributes to both. The flexibility of the top generates volume (projection), while its stiffness generates sustain. And with X-braced guitar tops, here’s where the trade-off comes in: when something is made stiffer, its flexibility is reduced (and vice versa).

V-Class bracing changes all that. With Taylor’s V-Class bracing, an acoustic guitar top can be both stiff and flexible — for more volume and sustain. V-Class bracing provides stiffness parallel to the strings for more rigidity and, hence, sustain. Flexibility on either side generates the air movement necessary for robust projection. It’s the best of both worlds. This groundbreaking innovation also improves intonation — not only producing notes that are louder and with longer sustain, but are also more in tune with each other. Guitarists at Sweetwater are gobsmacked. But don’t take our word for it — pick up the superb Taylor 517e Grand Pacific Builder’s Edition and experience it for yourself!

Taylor master luthier Andy Powers

Exceptional tonewoods

Mahogany is treasured for its punchy midrange bloom and strongly focused, earthy, and somewhat dry fundamental without a preponderance of ringing overtones. An acoustic guitar with mahogany back and sides easily in a track is why engineers and studio guitarists tend to prefer “hogs” for tracking. The 517e Grand Pacific features back and sides of solid, responsibly sourced neo-tropical mahogany and a top of torrefied solid Sitka spruce with Taylor’s tone-enhancing V-Class bracing, which takes the guitar’s native versatility to an entirely new level. The torrefication process thermally cures the wood to deliver a more played-in tone, and together with the V-Class bracing, gives you a highly responsive and expressive instrument with increased dynamic range, robust projection and sustain, and harmonic synergy when chording up the entire fingerboard.

Cutting-edge Taylor Expression System 2 electronics

If you play plugged in, then you’re going to love the Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) electronics built into your 517e Grand Pacific. The key to this fantastic system is the three-section proprietary pickup located behind the saddle. Because of where it’s positioned and how it’s integrated into the guitar’s saddle, the ES2 pickup provides you with remarkably clear and accurate sound. In addition to a master volume control, a pair of tone controls let you tweak your highs and lows to get the sound you need, and a discreet phase switch offers vital onboard feedback suppression.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

517e

This guitar has exceeded my expectations. Ive seen a few videos comparing the 517e with the more taditional Martin and Gibson acoustics, where it seems most were favoring those. I have been playing guitar for about 8 years, and have never really considered buying a high end acoustic. I am simply amazed at how clear each note can be heard, with such a warm, full, resonate tone. You can play very softly, with plenty of clarity and volume, or really dig in, but the feeling is always there. The sustain is incredible as well. The neck has a perfect width for my hands, allowing me to truly choose which strings on a chord i would like to play, while leaving others open if desired. There are no dead spots anywhere to be found as i have been used to, on the finger board. It doesnt matter which position i play my chords in, this guitar has such a sweet sound and feel. It also looks pretty sweet aswell which is what drew me to this model specifically. Sean was awesome with getting me through the process, and had alot of information to any question i had. I would buy this guitar again if it was ever lost or destroyed.

Dead Solid Perfect

I have been playing guitar since I was a kid, starting out learning Hank Williams on my dad's Gibson. The first acoustic I ever bought was an Ibanez 1979 Artwood dreadnought that I saw Jimmy Messina playing at a show. I have since learned that I got lucky, and got a really special guitar in that purchase. In 1988 I traded both in on a Gibson ES-335 Dot Blonde Custom Shop Edition that I have played ever since. In all that time, I have been trying to find another acoustic with a response and sound that I liked as much as I did with that first Ibanez - but one that also played as well as did that epic Gibson. I was a grandpa twice over before I found what I was looking for, but not without the help of my Sweetwater Sales Engineer Extraordinaire - Mitch Dazey.

The Taylor 517e Builder's Edition V-Class, Wild Honey Burst pictured is everything I have always wanted in an acoustic. I love playing finger style, but I wanted an acoustic with enough punch and body to match the passion I feel when I am playing. This guitar is special like that. I researched the Grand Pacific concept, and that of the V-Class Bracing. The engineering of it just makes sense, as does the use of a Torrefied Spruce top to get me just the right sound. I love the Silent Satin finish. The Compound Carve of the neck is dead solid perfect for playing in comfort and with expression. Everything put into this guitar shows and merits it's Builder's Edition caliber. The Grand Pacific design is for me like the kind of guitar I wasn't sure you could get anymore. Mad props to Mitch for hearing me out and steering me to this guitar. I am not a guy who has ever wanted a stable of guitars. I really only ever wanted two. With this purchase, I got the one I was missing. Read and listen to the reviews. Do your own research, but this Taylor is unlike any other I have ever played or heard.

Another note about Sweetwater. In the process of buying this guitar, I actually purchased another brand, which didn't come close to working out once I unboxed it. Sweetwater never even blinked when I said that I was going to be sending it back. What Sweetwater, and Mitch specifically, did is why I buy from them. Mitch processed the return on the spot when I called, but then also followed up to find out what I thought had been missing. When I tried to solve the missing ingredients problem by throwing money at more expensive guitars, Mitch actually took issue and dialed me back. Sweetwater has done that with me more than once as well. They listen and their guidance is spot on. Also, I love how they always find a way to cut me a little bit better of a deal, or throw in an extra or two when I call instead of just ordering online. If I receive something that doesn't work for me, they are easy to work with on returns. So if you are wondering whether Sweetwater is worth dealing with, the answer is absolutely. And a word on Taylor. The first version of this guitar that I received from Sweetwater had a minor inconsistency in the material on the fingerboard. You couldn't even feel it and needed a magnifying glass to see it, but I shot a macro photo of it and sent it to Taylor Customer Service along with my concern that given time it might become an issue. They got back to me a few hours later saying "Probably not, but either way, this isn't the level of quality we are going for in our Builder's Edition guitars." They ask that I contact Mitch and let him know that they wanted to swap it out, saying "Sweetwater won't have any problem with this anyway, but just let them know that we want to get this one back." Once again, Sweetwater was great to work with. I called in. Mitch got the return going, and connected me to a Tech Support Specialist who helped me pick out another guitar, even going to the trouble to review all of the photos of the guitar with me just help 'make my order right'. Needless to say, I am really glad that I found Sweetwater, glad that I went with Taylor, and am loving the last few months with the acoustic I have always wanted.

Thanks for reading and happy trails all.

The tone speaks volumes.

I was looking for another acoustic. I know everyone has their own taste but WOW! This Taylor 517e Grand Pacific Builder's Edition V-Class - Wild Honey Burst is room filling, low end powerful with mids and highs as sweet as can be. Skyler helped me grab the one in inventory I wanted fast. I can't recommend this Taylor or sales engineer Skyler McGlothlin enough. Thanks again Sweetwater!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Nick Rice

I've never felt so at home on a high-end acoutstic guitar. As someone that mostly plays electric guitar, I'm always very impressed with the playability of the Taylor necks. The mahogany tonewoods mixed with the Taylor sparkle and the V-class sustain make this a great all-around guitar. I've used it for fingerpicking and heavy strumming, and it has a sweet, but not harsh top end with plenty of bottom end for more traditional genres. This guitar tackles it all and it looks great doing it.
