Huge Legendary Tone in a Lunchbox Amp

The EVH 5150 III amplifier is one of the most popular amps at Sweetwater. That's why we're excited about the EVH 5150 III LBX 15-watt electric guitar amplifier head. This minute monster gives you the same Crunch and Full Burn channels as its bigger brothers. And you can even simulate Ed's variac trick with the power switch, taking the amp down to 3-3/4 watts. Compared with some amps trying to be all things to all people, the EVH 5150 III LBX's hard-rocking sound is a blast of fresh air.

EVH 5150 III LBX 15-watt Tube Amp Head at a Glance:
  • Gets you closer to the fabled Brown sound
  • 15 all-tube watts with a 1/4 power switch
  • Built to rock hard
Gets you closer to the fabled Brown sound

Eddie's Brown sound may be one of the most sought-after tones of all time. You get a head start on capturing that famous sound with the EVH 5150 III LBX, an amp designed in partnership with the man himself. You'll find both the Crunch and Full Burn channels from the larger 5150 III designs. And at 15 or 3-3/4 watts, you can take those larger-than-life sounds to the stage or jam in your own home.

15 all-tube watts with a 1/4 power switch

Get a mammoth rocking guitar tone, but with all the convenience of a lunchbox sized amp head that pushes 15 or 4 watts. There is no denying the power and glory of a screaming high-wattage amplifier head. But that design is simply not a viable option a lot of the time. EVH has found a way to get the punch of their famed 5150 III amps into this EL84-loaded amp. Fifteen watts is great for almost any gig, but run the amp at 3-3/4 watts when you're rocking out at home and near a more ear-friendly playing volume.

Built to rock hard

There are a million low-watt amps with great clean channels out there. But this is the only one designed around Eddie Van Halen's genre-defining rock tones. But if a cleaner shade is something you're looking for, don't despair. Both channels clean up unbelievably well with a simple twist of your guitar's volume knob. Even when playing through mountains of gain, its touch sensitivity and control are out of this world.

EVH 5150 III LBX 15-watt Tube Amp Head Features:
  • 15-watt high-gain tube amplifier designed around the Van Halen sound
  • 15- and 3-3/4-watt performance for getting cranked tones at different volumes
  • 2 footswitchable dirty channels: Crunch and Full Burn
  • Footswitch included
  • EL84 power tubes
  • Effects loop
The EVH 5150 III LBX screams in the way only an EVH can!

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from EVH do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Ed Van Halen has do it again!

I recently purchased the EVH III LBX from Sweetwater. Finding a small amp that gives you a big "real" amp tone is very difficult. At 62, most of my playing is in my music room. To get a good distorted tone out of my Marshall half stack you have to crank it, and that rattles the windows and drives my family crazy. So after some YouTube research, I came upon the EVH III LBX. Holly moly. Thank you Ed Van Halen. At 15 watts, this all tube amp head is a monster. I'm talking loud. But, on the back you flip a switch and you are at 3.5 amps. With the two Channels you can go from classic 70s tone to extreme brown sound and more. You have full eq on the front and enough gain to play modern metal if you wish. I like the heavy channel (2) with the gain at noon. I run the amp into my old Marshall 4x12 JVM 1960 cab with 25 watt greenbacks.
Another example of this little amps greatness is its transparency. I've played a dozen guitars through the EVH and they all still have there own personalities still intact. The only effects I us ( need) is my old DD-3 delay just barely on through the amps effects loop.
If you get a chance, try this amp out. But you better take you bucks with you, because it is totally infectious.
Thank you Sweetwater music for the great service. As always.
Music background: Started playing 1976. Played in a hair metal band in the 80s. Rock fusion in the 90s. Now I write and play for my family and friends.

All you need in a lunchbox

I bought the EVH 5150 III LBX ( Black and white version) about a week ago from my great friends at Sweetwater music. Now, I'm 62, started playing guitar in 1974. I've owned many amps over the decades, and I must say Edward Van Halen really did a magnificent job with this little amp.
I do not gig anymore but still love that wide open sound. The EVH 5150 III LBX, being 15 watts, is LOUD! But...you can decrease the wattage to 3.75 watts with the flip of a switch and you have outrageous saturated 80s + distortion that satisfies the ears. With full EQ on the front you can shape all sorts of tones. Also, I notice that when playing different guitars you get different tones depending on the wood of the guitar body, meaning the EHV LBX is very transparent. It has an effects loop which I run a Boss DD-3 delay through and that is all you need. I have the distortion at noon, and it is very rich and tight.
I highly recommend this amp. At $ bucks, you get a lot od amp for the money.

The metal tone I've been searching for

The lead channel on this amp paired with a mesa cab is everything I've ever wanted from a amp to play metal on. You do not need any other pedals to get a perfect metal tone from this amp. I've been playing metal for 15 years, playing live and recording and I have to say this is by far 100 percent the best piece of gear I've been seeking for years. I get nasty earth shattering sounds from this at a normal playing volume in my home. Customized mine a little bit and took the evh logo and face plate off.

The clean channel has great character, has that classic hot tube sound and I do enjoy it for what it is.

I paired this with a bugera 1x12 cab, that sounded like garbage. Then a Orange 1x12, looked great, sounded like there was a blanket over it, Not a fan of the grill cover for modern metal tones would probably be great for rock or clean stuff. Then I got the Mesa 1x12 and was blown away what it did for the sound of the amp. EVH x MESA is what I'll be rocking on for a while. I also played this out of the Mesa 2x12.. Sounded like a freight train, the 2x12 definitely added some balls, like Randy Marsh with a wheel barrel.

Pro's - Great metal sounds, great sound at lower volumes but loud enough to play with a drummer.

Con's- No reverb, no outputs for direct recording like others in its class, hard to play at very low volumes, the master knob sensitivity is either basically off or a little loud.

Amazing Tone Monster - do NOT overlook the LBX I

do NOT overlook the LBX I – this amazing tone monster. The OG of LBX' has both the blue & red channels and is amazingly loud, and I mean loud. The blue channel by itself is worth the price of admission – think modified Plexi or hot-rodded JCM 800. Then for leads, you have the red channel, tight articulate notes just pop out of this. LBX II & Stealth have their place too, but this the vision EVH had for delivering amazing tone from a small platform.
For less than $ this is the BIGGEST bang for the tonal buck you can find. Over 30 years I have owned every amp in the pursuit of tone – JCM 800, 900, DSL, TSL (60 & 100 watt), Mesa Tremo, Triple Recto & everything in between. All are brilliant amps, but are 3 to 5 times the cost.
1x12 Cabinet – do not overlook this thing, bought it because I just liked the setup & homage to EVH. Who knew it would push gobs of air & deliver amazing tones. Literally thought my 4x12 was behind me as I played with the band.
Finally – Sweetwater brings the "sweet" and the Les Paul & many other goodies have come from these fine folks. Charlie Davis is my tone advisor & won't make a purchase without his guidance.

Rock Box!

I bought this after trying a used 6505+ 112 that didn"t sound quite right and perhaps had an issue. I considered the 6505mh as well, and may still pick up a used one at some point. My previous high gain amp was a mk1 5150 that I used for about 18years and loved it. This amp is very reminiscent of the mk1, there"s a different mid character between them but their both 5150"s! So far at lower volumes I can dial In a decent clean sound no problem. The blue channel is beautiful and has a more open sound as compared to the red channel. Plenty of gain from 70"s Marshall to 80"s Metal and beyond. The red channel is awesome more compressed and saturated, some people might say some fizz but that"s always been part of the character of 5150"s, a little sizzle! Controls and responsive and I"ve yet to really find a bad sound in it. It"s tight and heavy yet there"s clearity. Build quality is very nice and feels solid. Having no trouble getting the volume low for home use still sounds good. Resonance and presence controls really allow you to shape the sound and have always been the secret to the 5150 sound. So far feeling like the price is a good buy. I bought a sweetwater demo model, Thanks to Derek K. for getting be a small deal!
