Modern EVH Tube Tone with a British Flair

The 5150 Iconic series head delivers two channels of tube-fueled, EVH-style tone with a streamlined design that satisfies the needs of gigging and recording guitarists alike. This tube amp head is geared toward Edward Van Halen's latter-day hard rock tones. That said, its EL34-fueled power section gives it a British-infused voice that classic Van Halen aficionados will appreciate. There's plenty of sound shaping onboard, with per-channel Gain and Volume, a shared 3-band EQ, and global Resonance and Presence controls. The 5150 Iconic series head also includes a top-shelf noise gate, footswitchable Boost function, and high-quality reverb to ensure a dynamic performance and US-prime, grade-A-stamped sound. Other features include a power reduction circuit, speaker-emulated output, dual parallel speaker outputs, selectable impedance, and an excellent-sounding effects loop. Brimming with modern EVH aesthetics, the 5150 Iconic series head delivers the searing tone and growling gain that King Edward made famous.

EL34s for the brown sound

The 5150 Iconic series is tailor-made for modern EVH crunch. But when you need that thick, sustaining tone that Ed made famous on Van Halen's 1978 debut, you need to turn to this 5150 Iconic series head. What really sets this amp apart from the rest of the range is its EL34-based power amplifier. EL34s have much of the tone of the great British rock amps of the '70s and '80s. This amp nails those timbres with ease, adding a level of sag and saturation that feels and sounds great. And it will still get dirty with the best of modern metal machines.

Two channels of tube-fueled EVH tone

The 5150 Iconic series head is voiced with two ECC83 preamp tubes and fueled by four EL34 power tubes, arming you with two channels of muscular hard rock firepower. Each of this tube amp head's channels includes two voices: a Green channel for crystalline cleans or overdriven crunch; and a Red channel for fiery leads with a blistering-hot Burn setting. Each channel includes independent Gain and Volume controls for easy level matching, along with a shared 3-band EQ for effortless sonic sculpting. Global Resonance and Presence knobs round out the 5150 Iconic series head's tone-shaping controls.

Chock-full of must-have features

Despite its streamlined design, the EVH 5150 Iconic series head is a gig-ready rock machine. Channel two includes a built-in noise gate, which effectively — and transparently — attenuates hiss and hum. The guitarists here at Sweetwater are impressed by this gate's responsiveness. You can churn out rapid staccato riffs all day long with zero noise between notes, and you can play long, sustaining passages without chopped-off notes. Channel two boasts a footswitchable Boost function that adds another 10dB to your signal to keep your solos front and center. The 5150 Iconic series head features a smooth-sounding reverb, which injects your playing with depth and dimension. You get a power reduction circuit for stadium-sized tones at bedroom-appropriate volumes, a speaker-emulated output for easy DI-ing, and dual parallel speaker outputs for no-fuss expansion. You also get a high-quality effects loop for integrating your pedalboard and outboard processors — an essential if you want to incorporate Eddie's distinctive pitch-shifting effect into your tonal palette.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While Certified Open Box items from EVH do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

The EL34 Iconic kicks butt!!
JAMES BROWN designed?! Say less. SOLD! We're lucky to have this guy in the business. He's a legit legend.
This amp is like a Swiss Army knife for me. I mostly play metalcore, hardcore, and thrash metal riffs and this amp does it all. I'm also not too big on running cleans, but I find myself on the clean channel noodling running a shimmer pedal through it a lot. Then of course kick it on the red channel and this thing becomes a fire breathing monster. I'm running the amp into a Randall 212 that I loaded with the Eminence Swamp Thang and Texas Heat and it's the perfect combo. Finally I can stop tone chasing for a while and just enjoy jamming. Shout-out to sweetwater and Randy Poteete for being the best in the game with customer service. Love y'all!
Blown away!!!
This is the head you need. I have the original block logo Peavey 5150 and this has the soul of that head with the features I would have wanted to add to it. First the green channel is the clean channel that works for everything I play from the 60s to the 80s pop, country, rock, and metal. The red channel does all the Van Halen eras but will dial in everything else.

The noise gate is everything it says it is. works like a dream. The reverb is great but I rarely use reverb. The presence and resonance add that tone adjust you need to make this your own dialed in sound. Someone once said when starting out with a new (or new to you) amp, just put the tone controls all at 5 and play a few songs, make adjustments, and repeat. After several days you will have your sound. This amp will deliver.

incredible head for the money
I can't believe the price of this thing. Everyone says the el34 is a "British rock" tone but I think its much more versatile than that. This thing is a high gain machine. With the resonance and presence you can essentially reach any tone youre looking for. Great head! Talk to your rep! Josh hooked me up!
yep
My cats HATE this thing. It's loud. It CHUGS. I use the noise gate so they don't have to listen to any hissing from my pedals. Doesn't matter. They still see it as a threat and leave the room the second I fire it up.
10/10 catboxes
Beast of an amp!
I finally pulled the trigger and bought a EVH 5150 EL34 Iconic 80 watt amp head. My sales engineer TJ Jackson has been talking about this amp and he was right on every point! This little gem is freeking awesome it does everything from classic rock to serious hard core metal. It is listed at 80 watts but it's the loudest 80 watts Ive ever heard with ground shaking low end and endless gain. So far TJ has taken care of me every step of the way and I have been his client for many years.
Thank you TJ and Sweetwater!!!
Music background: Bands off and on for 50 yrs.
