EVH Tube Tone in a Streamlined 112 Combo

The 5150 Iconic Series combo delivers two channels of tube-infused, EVH-style tone with a streamlined design that satisfies the needs of gigging and recording guitarists alike. This tube amp combo covers the full gamut of Edward Van Halen's contemporary hard rock tones, with an extra voicing on each channel for added versatility. There's plenty of sound shaping onboard, with per-channel Gain and Volume, a shared 3-band EQ, and global Resonance and Presence controls. What's more, this amp's custom-designed EVH Celestion speaker and tailor-built cabinet produce pristine cleans and articulate high-gain tones with ample low-end response. The 5150 Iconic Series combo also includes a top-shelf noise gate, footswitchable Boost function, and high-quality reverb to ensure a dynamic performance and U.S.-prime, grade-A-stamped sound. Other features include a power reduction circuit, speaker-emulated output, dual parallel speaker outputs, selectable impedance, and an excellent-sounding effects loop. If you're craving EVH's latter-day sound, the 5150 Iconic Series combo delivers the searing tone and growling gain that King Edward made famous.

Two channels of tube-fueled EVH tone

The 5150 Iconic Series combo is voiced with two ECC83S preamp tubes and fueled by two 6L6 power tubes, arming you with two channels of muscular hard rock firepower. Each of this tube amp combo's channels includes two voices: a Green channel for crystalline cleans or overdriven crunch; and a Red channel for fiery leads with a blistering-hot Burn setting. Each channel includes independent Gain and Volume controls for easy level matching, along with a shared 3-band EQ for effortless sonic sculpting. Global Resonance and Presence knobs round out the 5150 Iconic Series combo's tone-shaping controls.

Chock-full of must-have features

Despite its streamlined design, the EVH 5150 Iconic Series combo is a gig-ready rock machine. Channel two includes a built-in noise gate, which effectively — and transparently — attenuates hiss and hum. The guitarists here at Sweetwater are impressed by this gate's responsiveness. You can churn out rapid staccato riffs all day long with zero noise between notes, and you can play long, sustaining passages without chopped-off notes. Channel two boasts a footswitchable Boost function that adds another 10dB to your signal to keep your solos front and center. The 5150 Iconic Series combo features a smooth-sounding reverb, which injects your playing with depth and dimension. You get a power reduction circuit for stadium-sized tones at bedroom-appropriate volumes, a speaker-emulated output for easy DI-ing, and dual parallel speaker outputs for no-fuss expansion. You also get a high-quality effects loop for integrating your pedalboard and outboard processors — an essential if you want to incorporate Eddie's distinctive pitch-shifting effect into your tonal palette.

Custom-designed EVH Celestion speaker

The 5150 Iconic Series combo comes loaded with a custom-designed 12-inch EVH Celestion speaker. Voiced specifically for the 5150 Iconic Series combo's preamp circuit, this speaker delivers a sonic eruption of massive proportions. Plug in, and you'll experience pristine cleans and scorching-hot high-gain tones with truckloads of clarity and articulation. This tube combo's tailor-built MDF cabinet houses internal plywood baffling that exhibits an ample — yet incredibly tight — low-frequency response that's guaranteed to add thunder to your power chord-laden riffage.

Great amp

Worth every penny. I mainly wanted great distorted rhythm and lead tones for under a grand. I didn't really need 40 watts, and I read and watched reviews on many amps. This was the right call. I am mostly playing it on the 10W setting. It sounds great at all volumes. Set on 1 in my practice room it doesn't bother anyone. On 5 it's quite loud. Many reviews said channel 2 is too much gain. It is not, it is awesome. I mostly play stuff like UFO, Whitesnake, Van Halen, and I play a lot on both channels. My current settings are in the picture. I am getting Van Halen tones that I like (he had many). I have tried the burn setting but channel 2 is red enough without it. I 60 years old and I am not an extreme modern metal guy, but even for me burn is not crazy over the top. Bottomline, ALL the gain levels are useful on this amp, none are way out of bounds like on some amps. Amp is quiet. I didn't like the reverb at first but now I do, it is a very good fit for this amp. I thought I might buy a reverb pedal but I won't. The resonance knob is useful. It adds ooomph without adding mush. Boost adds boost. This amp needs no drive pedals.
The construction of the amp is very solid and well done. The design and look is utilitarian. No flash, all dash. I love this. It's an amp, not a ballerina.

What don't I like? I didn't like the plastic '5150' badge on the front, so I took it off and replaced the screws. I would like to have separate EQ for each channel, but that is obviously something that would have pushed the cost up. Wheels would be nice, this thing weighs 50 pounds, and I am old.

Best amp I have ever had. Last amp I will ever buy. Great service by Sweetwater.

Solid piece of gear.

My first impressions made me smile and happy about this product, it covered everything I was looking for in a combo amp for the price.

As I started using it for recording, I decided to take it a step up and exchange the woofer with a Celestion G12M-65 Creamback 12-inch speaker.

Ever since then, the sound of the amp has improved significantly, if anything like a $ guitar amp.

This thing handles pedals well, so whatever you are trying to achieve at a good price, I believe this amp offers everything and has greater potential if you do what I did, which was switching the speaker to get the sound be close to the end result you have in your head.

I hope you found this helpful!

Exactly what I was looking for

Before purchasing I was reading a lot about this amp and what it can do. Watched many you tube vids with demos to hear how it sounds.
I have to say that once I plugged into it it performed better than the reviews and videos I saw. It gives me the sounds and versatility that I was looking for. I am very pleased.
