Fat Mike’s Favorite Picks

For over four decades, Fat Mike’s round and warm bass tone has made up the core of NOFX’s brash punk rock. Now, with the Dunlop Fat Mike Nylon Standard Pick, you can harness the key to his signature tone! A .60mm thickness gives this pick a flexibility that’s uncommon on many bass guitar picks, allowing Fat Mike to dish out his rapid-fire and aggressive bass lines with ease. Take it from Fat Mike: “This pick gives you a round, even bass tone that provides a foundation for guitar and vocals so the rest of the band can sound great!”

A diverse tonal legacy

The fact that nylon has weathered the advent of newer and more innovative plastics is a testament to its tone, durability, and versatility. In its heavier widths, it produces a warm sound that’s favored by jazz guitarists and other mellow tone chasers. The sound of a very thin nylon pick produces the iconic “clicky” acoustic guitar sound that textures so many classic recordings of the 20th century.

Dunlop standard pick shape: the standard for versatility

A jack of all trades, the Dunlop standard is the most common pick shape. There are a wealth of specialized picks that excel in their own way, but Sweetwater guitarists find that the sheer versatility of the standard is unmatched. It's the standard for reason!

Extra flex
I like the idea of using thin floppy picks for bass, been doing it for years, and Fat Mike has always been influential in regards to that. Opposite of guitar where I like super thick picks.

Having used the grey standard .60mm nylons for a while now, I was excited to get Fat Mike's signature picks since I assumed they would be exactly the same. And while they mostly are, the pink nylon seems to have changed the density of the picks:

They're definitely the same thickness of the standard .60mm picks, but they're also a lot more flexible. Comparatively these make the standard grey picks seem stiff, whereas these pink ones offer a ton more floppiness and flex.

If you like that floppy flappy sound these are going to add even more to your arsenal. If you're looking for something more stiff than the standard grey .60mm, then you might want to try something else. Probably the .60mm Max-grip Nylons. They're by far the stiffest of the bunch!

My suspicion is that the pink picks are, indeed, pure nylon - Same for the reds Dunlop produces. Whereas Dunlop grey and black picks might contain various levels of the carbon stiffo formula to make them more durable. As I said, .60mm Max-grip Nylons are by far the stiffest. The Fat Mikes offer the most flex. The standard greys are in the middle.

Either way, cool picks. I really like them. Caring this much about picks is probably the least punk thing you could do, but we're probably going to be stockpiling these pink things for years until they're discontinued, so sorry Mike. These babies might haunt you forever.
Surprisingly Good
I saw an interview with Fatty where he said they use these pics with a Jazzmaster to record most of the guitar tracks for NoFX in the studio. I just happened to run across them and decided to give them a try. I have a bunch of the grey 60's that I use primarily for acoustic playing (thanks, Tim Pearce), but these are slightly different, in a good way. I find myself reaching for one of these more and more, to the point where I am using them almost exclusively, regardless of what I am playing.

Mike definitely figured out a killer combination of material and flexibility. I'm about to start hoarding these.

My favorite pick
I usually use heavier picks for both guitar and bass but... More and more I find my self picking this up. Its honestly the perfect amount of flexy where if I can hold it farther back for more flex or lower for more firm. Being a Fat Mike pick is a plus but this things rocks. For the price if you're looking at this you should just buy it.
