Unlike any other for clarity and definition

The 4011 is one of my all-time favorite microphones. These are a "go-to" microphone for me in the studio. I was introduced to the 4011 years ago and it instantly became a favorite. I always use these strings (or the 4006 if I need Omni's) or in applications where clarity and transient detail is important. These microphones are brilliant and always capture sound with such a high fidelity and multi-dimensional characteristic. I always feel there is more depth in the recording when I have used these.

People will often say they sound more "hi-fidelity" but what appeals to me is their off-axis response. Many microphones cause sound sources to sound "phasey" when they are off axis, and thus any bleed into the microphone from other sound-sources ends up being quite destructive in the recording. The 4011 is outstanding because off-axis sound doesn't have that usual phasey-destructive bleed character, instead it is contained-controlled-bleed that gives depth and a sense of space between instruments. Doesn't matter if it's classical concerto's, jazz ensembles, acoustic guitars, or crazy rock-drums, these can capture all the transient detail and give you a strong and accurate image!

I love this microphone so much

I've kept upgrading mics over the years, and I've finally found one I'm happy with.

I realize now that I like a mic to record exactly what the source sounds like. If that's your taste, then I highly recommend this microphone.

Amazing Mic

As a live sound engineer and professional sound mixer for 14 years, DPA is easily one of my favorite brands to use for microphones. In Particular the 4011A is an amazing catch all microphone that I use in a variety of scenarios.
First let's touch on the clarity. The 4099 offers amazing clarity and cohesion in sound, the off axis phase cohesion is literally unmatched in the industry, and truly allows you to be confident in what "what you hear is what you get" with the 4011A. It truly gives depth and space to the instrument contained within its wash, including those off axis, as compared to other mics. It truly sound "Open" and "Clear"

Want to use it for overheads? Beautiful clear sound, perfectly capturing the overtones and sizzles of the cymbals and adding depth to your kit.

One of my favorite places to use this mic is a little unconventional, but while with Michael Bolton we turned our entire stage into a DPA shrine. The Kick Drum and Snare top became our favorite applications for the 4011. Offering an unparalleled clarity and capture of the snare overtones, the punch that you get out of it is unmatched. The same with the kick mic, capturing the full spectrum including the low end, with incredible fidelity. It removed the necessity for 2 mics because of the capability for full spectrum capture with high cohesion and very little compression in the diaphragm. And also, honestly, one fo the best kick sounds I've captured live.

Overall this is an incredible mic, and a wonderful addition to any studio or Live setup, especially for those who truly appreciate source of sound and mic technique!

What you hear is what you get...

The title says it all. This mic is a clear picture of the source, nothing less, nothing more. But that sounds boring, right? Its not. Put a pair of these over a drum kit and feel like you're right there. Its in the punch, image and impact of the sound along with the straight up frequency response that remains true at all dynamic levels.

That's my most used application for these, drum overheads. But they are just as happy on a lead vocal, acoustic guitar, upright bass, room mics... you name it. Of course orchestral and oddball ethnic instruments are a perfect fit for this as it is so true to source.

What can I say? Big fan here...

Throw away you other mics

I own and operate a commercial recording studio. We have everything you can think of microphone wise. These are my go to Microphones when I want to capture the true sound of the source. I use them in ORTF, XY or spaced pair. I"ve A B this with a u87, M147, and 414. The vocalist truly sounds like the person is standing in the middle of your speakers. It"s three dimensional. Only word of caution, if your in a bad room or the source is bad. It will record it exactly as it sounds. I"m saving up for the 4006s.
