Inject Your Strat with Sweet PAF-like Tone

Guitarists have been chasing Billy Gibbons' sweet-but-slightly-rude tone for what seems like eons. And now you can inject that very same tone into your Stratocaster, thanks to Seymour Duncan's Red Devil pickups. These single-coil-sized humbuckers give you a sweet PAF-like tone that, in Seymour Duncan's words, sound like they've been dipped in hot sauce. Experience airy highs, sizzling mids, and a growl that's guaranteed to bring new life to any instrument. Beyond that, your pinch harmonics will squeal and sing like never before. Each pickup in the Red Devil pickup set features its own unique wind. If you want a sound that's the size of Texas, drop a set of Red Devil pickups into your Strat. These pickups are proof that big things can come in small packages.

3 unique pickups winds

Each pickup in the Red Devil pickup set receives its own custom wind, with specially calibrated Alnico V magnets. The bridge delivers a PAF-like sound with enough extra spice to lend extra fatness to your Strat. The neck and middle back off the heat a bit, while yielding a sweet, smoky blues tone that's ideal for cleans, rhythm, and lead alike. The guitarists here at Sweetwater have coaxed an endless array of sizzling tones out of these pickups. Any guitarist looking to beef up their Strat's tone should give Red Devil pickups serious consideration.

Pearly Gates — Billy Gibbons' secret sauce

Billy Gibbons is renowned for his throaty, larger-than-life guitar sound. And the secret to his magical tone? Well, it all starts with his most prized guitar, which he dubbed Mistress Pearly Gates. This instrument has been at the heart of every ZZ Top album since the beginning. Billy so loves the tone of this axe's PAF humbuckers that he won't settle for anything else. So what does he do when he plays a Strat? That's where Red Devil pickups come in. These single-coil-sized humbuckers are a direct replacement for a Stratocaster's original pickups, so you can enjoy sizzling PAF-like tones without carving up your favorite instrument.

Seymour Duncan Billy Gibbons Red Devil Pickup Set Features:

  • PAF-like humbuckers that fit in any Strat-sized single-coil guitar
  • Voiced to sound like the pickups in Billy Gibbons' Pearly Gates
  • Each pickup features its own unique wind for an endless array of sizzling tones
  • Specially calibrated Alnico V magnets deliver airy highs, sizzling mids, and a growling bite
  • 4-conductor lead wire supply multiple wiring options
  • Vacuum wax potting ensure a squeal-free performance

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

The Red Devil Hype

I'm super excited about these. I have a Strat that I love, super beautiful and feels good to play, but I've realized that single coil guitars just don't work for me. Every time I set about trying to play the Strat, I'd always get frustrated and eventually go back to another guitar with Humbuckers. I don't particularly like playing Les Pauls are many other options out there, definitely drawn to Fender style and feel, but I prefer the Humbuckers. I was all set on trading it in for a Meteora, but happily I discovered these pickups.

So there's a lot of talk about how it makes your Strat sound like a Les Paul. That hasn't been my experience at all, but I should say that I have a tremolo bridge, set up to float, so that may be part of it. It definitely doesn't sound like your standard Strat, but it does still have some of the transparency I associate with a Strat. Positions 2 and 4 sound a lot like neck and middle on a normal Strat (I know that seems strange, but it's what it reminds me of.) I find all five positions are very useful and sound great, previously I used the neck almost exclusively. The middle pickup sounds very different from the neck or bridge. It works for me because it sounds great, no Strat noise, mid-range punch, and more of the dynamics you think of with Humbuckers, but it also doesn't sound like my other Humbucker guitars.

I have not swapped out volume and tone for 500k. The pickups are designed to work for 250k, and they sound good, although I wish I could easily try them with 500k. They're definitely on the dark side, but I probably wouldn't want them to be brighter.

So I don't think you're going to get a strat shaped Les Paul, and you certainly aren't getting Fender noiseless. These are definitely going to make your guitar sound different. I would recommend them if you have several guitars and want something different, or if you have a Strat and are just frustrated with the tone. It lives in this really interesting place between a Les Paul and a Strat, and personally I like that it doesn't sound like either. That might not work for some people, but it works for me.

Awesome!!

Got these put them into a Strat that I had not been using because I didn't like the tone. I plugged it in after replace with the Red Devils and it sounded absolutely amazing. I now has the bite I was looking for and a stagnant guitar is now in the everyday rack!!!! truly well worth the purchase

Les Paul in a Strat

I don´t want to carve and maybe ruin a beatiful guitar so I fitted this in the bridge of my candy apple red Fender american standard stratocaster lefty -96.
I have since some years also a Fender japan stratocaster lefty with a little-59er in the bridge and I like it very much. I play most blues and riff based classic rock.
The Red Devil is much beefier than the -59er and you get higher output as well.
The only bad thing is that it has got a very dominant mid.
More than I prefer really but that´s not a big problem.

O.K.

If you buy these then you might as well just buy a Les Paul because your Strat will no longer be a Strat. Some of us are not Les Paul fans because we don't like Les Paul necks and fretboards however and if you want the best of both guitars then these or the Little '59's are for you. Both sound almost identical. I have no problem getting that Tush sound and all the squeals. These come off pretty strong however and I found myself having to set these pickups very low or the magnetic field pulls on the strings and stops your sustain cold. They take getting used to and I'm not sure what applications these are really good for yet. Your guitar will no longer be a Stratocaster with these and that is for sure.
