Classic 1073-style Pre

The classic Neve 1073 wrote the book on characterful mic preamplification, so in designing their 1073MPL 500 Series mic/line preamp, BAE aimed high. It's amazing how well they succeeded. Done up in classic RAF blue-gray livery, the hand-wired, transformer-coupled, pure Class A 1073MPL is quite versatile, with 71dB of gain that lets you capture subdued sources with your favorite ribbon mic. Cranking the main gain stage enhances your tracks with tasty vintage-style coloration. Under the bonnet reside the finest components, such as Carnhill transformers — like those found in vintage 1073s. Also onboard: a DI jack, polarity reverse, 48V phantom power, and selectable impedance to optimally match a variety of microphones. The 1073MPL delivers distinctive Class A sound with a harmonically rich bottom end, focused midrange, and slightly resonant highs. If you want a pre with personality and punch, Sweetwater recommends the BAE 1073MPL. It's the sound of rock 'n' roll.

BAE 1073MPL 500 Series Mic Preamp Features:

  • All Class A, hand-wired transformer-coupled design in a 500 Series module
  • Original Marconi-style knobs
  • Input impedance selector switches between 1200 and 300 ohms
  • Handles line-level inputs for added versatility
  • High-impedance DI for guitar, bass, synth, and other sources
  • Same Carnhill St Ives transformers as the 1073 and 1084
  • Frequency response: 10Hz-55kHz (-3dB)
  • Line input impedance: 10k ohms
  • Output impedance: 65 ohms
  • Common mode rejection ratio: 100dB min at 60Hz
  • Maximum output level: +27.4 dBu at 600ohms
  • 71dB of gain on tap handles low-out ribbon mics
  • Not standalone — requires compatible 500 Series chassis

Food for Thought…

My Thoughts
Definitely a killer, and pro preamp.
1073 purists will argue that this isn't a true 1073, but that it is a 1272 because it only has 2 gain stages, not 3 , and in some senses, that is correct. But there is also purists that say its not a 1073 sound if the EQ isn't part of the circuit, and that's also a way of looking at it. Another thing is that there was a coupling capacitor that had to be negated in the 500 series version. How much that affects the sound, Im not sure, but all I can say is this. When you forget about all that, and take it for what it is, its one of my favourite preamps, and it sounds wonderful… And also, all the Purists talk aside, I can also say this. I have known engineers, and heard from engineers that they consider BAE to be the best and closest replacement to an O.G 1073. I do think the Rack and or Version with EQ will get you a little closer to the originals, but also the 500 series(despite some changes) are absolutely killer, and as long as BAE keeps using Carnhill Transformers and keeps them Through Hole, they will have a home in my rack, and I would buy another and recommend them. Fat low end, thick and balanced midrange, sweet and silky highs that are just perfect, not super bright, but never sounds to dark to me. Drive the input Harder and you definitely get that nice Compression and Bloom. Like I say, taking it as it is without comparing, and Its a beauty. Compare it too much to the O.G, and it may fall short.

Neve 1073 pre from BAE

What can I say that hasn't been said already about these beautiful preamps. Just received my 3rd and working towards my 4th. Outstanding quality recreation that surpasses any clone. Big bottom and and smooth top end that will leave any engineer grinning. If you have to pick any preamp, I strongly suggest the BAE line of preamps as they're closest to real Neve preamps that you'll find. Huge thanks to my Sweetwater Sales Rep, Joe Shafer for coming through like a champ.

BAE 1073mpl 500 series microphone preamp

I've known about about BAE since the early days when Brent Averill was racking vintage preamps. As a matter of fact, Brent racked my pair of vintage 312's. So I was already familiar with the quality builds from BAE. The 1073mpl doesn't disappoint. The sound is incredible! Nice headroom, sparkly top end and a nice round bottom. It's my go to for acoustic guitar and vocals! Love it!

Excellent Mic Preamp

All I will say about this pre-amp is if you can't get a track to sound good recording through it this pre-amp is not the reason why.

FINALLY....LOW END....AND HEADROOM......

BAE HAS A GREAT REPUTATION IN THIS "BUSINESS". THEIR PRODUCTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. THEY HAVE MASSIVE HEADROOM AND INCREDIBLE LOW END. THEY SOUND LIKE THE OLD DAYS WHEN YOU WERE SITTING IN FRONT OF A CONSOLE RECORDING BASS TRACKS. I LOVE THEM. RECORDING TO 2" SOUNDS LIKE HEAVEN! THEY SOUND MORE LIKE A "NEVE" THAN THE "NEVE" PREAMPS. THEY ARE WELL WORTH THE INVESTMENT.
