Find the Right Phantom Power Supply for Your Mics & Audio Gear
A dedicated phantom power supply is designed to deliver clean voltage and consistent current to feed condenser mics and active DIs, no matter where your sessions take you. Whether you’re a bluegrass trio running active ribbons through a portable PA or a mobile podcaster capturing interviews in the field, Sweetwater has you covered. Read on for tips on choosing the right external phantom power supply for your rig, or start browsing our AC- and battery-powered options for studio and location work.
Why Do Condenser Mics and Active DIs Require Phantom Power?
When sound engineers talk about phantom power, they’re not talking about Slimer raiding the room service cart. Phantom power is DC voltage transmitted from a phantom power supply to an active audio device (usually a condenser mic, inline preamp, or active DI box) over pins 2 and 3 of a standard XLR cable. It rides alongside your audio signal without interfering with it, hence the “phantom” name. Condenser mics need this voltage to polarize their capsule element, and active DIs use it to buffer and balance your signal.
Why 48V? That was the emergency lighting voltage already in use at NRK’s studios in Norway when Neumann developed the KM 84, and it’s remained the professional standard ever since. Want to learn more? Check out our guide to phantom power.
Do You Need 48V Phantom Power, or Will Less Do?
How do you know how much phantom power your gear needs? Start by checking its spec sheet for the recommended voltage range. Most professional condensers, active ribbons, and active DIs operate best within the P48 standard range of 44–52 volts. Others perform well on as little as 12V.
If your setup includes mics and gear with different voltage requirements, look for a phantom power supply with a switchable output. Some units offer a 12V/48V rocker switch that lets you match the voltage to each device. Most phantom power supplies in our lineup deliver anywhere from 12 to 48 volts DC, with standard XLR inputs and outputs for easy integration into your signal chain.

If you need phantom power in the field, look for a compact unit that runs on batteries, AC power, or both. Battery-powered phantom power supplies give you off-grid flexibility, while AC-powered units are better suited to longer sessions where a wall outlet is nearby. For permanent studio or stage installs, rackmount units like the Neumann N 248 and Rolls RPB486 prioritize consistent, regulated voltage and clean power delivery across multiple channels, even with high-current mics in the signal chain.
